  3. Hey guys, With 500mm of rain falling here within the last week and the inability to fish anywhere, I thought I would go through some of my old photos to try and remember what a fish looks like. Came across this beauty which i had forgotten about, one of my favourites. Live Slimy Mackeral gets eaten by a trout, trout gets eaten by a <1m reef shark, <1m reef shark gets eaten by 3m or so Tiger shark (Notice the dark colour in the water...it isnt all blood, the shadow down deep is a tiger shark which bit the reefy in half) and no i didnt eat the tiger haha, nor did i even attempt to catch him
  4. Thankyou both for your useful tips and hints. In the last 24hrs since i made that post, we have had another 170mls. I cant believe it, it is depressing, im over the rain hey. Yeh i think the dams might be the only option at the moment mate.. there will be a lot of water between the fish tho haha. Oh well guna give it a crack tomorow regardless... cheers
  5. So...I'm well and truly over all this rain we have been having up here (another 110mls just yesterday!). Everyday I drive across the river it is dirty like a chocolate milkshake. I'm so keen for a fish, but options arent ideal at the moment. Dont have a boat, so cant escape the plume by heading out wide. Cant really "target" barra the moment, even though they like this flow, lots of water in the dams submerging the good lillys that were once prevalent. So...where do you guys fish when the river is less than optimal, when it is dirty. Is there any salvation where I might be able to land a few. Doesnt have to be Mackay specific, just a general idea of what you guys do would be great!!
  6. I work as an aquatic ecologist and a large part of my role is monitoring freshwater fish populations. A method we use is electrofishing. We have a boat, set up with a generator, transfor box, anodes out the front which delivers the charge and the hull of the boat is wired as a cathode to complete the circuit. We put upto 500volts in the water and upto 8 amps of current and it temporarily stuns every fish within a 5m diameter of the the boat and upto 2 meters depth. Its stuns them for a minute or 2, which gives us enough time to measure, weight and tag them. Then we write reports on management strategies and best practice to help keep the fishery sustainable. Here is the latest barra we caught...128cm and approx 30kg's
  7. Thanks mate...yeh they went down a treat..bber battered with fries mmmm
  8. G'Day all, Jimmy from NQ here. I often chase Barra and Jack but I wanted to try something different. I bought a beautful little stradic 2500FI, 2-4kg starlo stick tournament pro, a few little SX40's and poppers some light braid and leader and wanted to give this light tackle stuff a crack. Let me tell ya, I am now hooked, totally converted and believe the hype embraced by the nation on this type of fishing. Caught a few whiting on poppers and sx40, a bream and a flatty. Great fun
  9. Whats the drag capability in the standard spheros??

  12. Hi guys, caught this beautiful big trout the other day and noticed that the larger trout i catch all seem to have black marks on them in areas. Does anyone know why this occurs? Is it from coral rubbing? Any info appreciated. Cheers aye, Jimmy

Haha yeh if i had a cat, it would have had the first piece of that trout for sure. Better still, should have fed it to the annoying buggger next door (cat that is) hehe. Better still the mother in law
  15. Thanks heaps mate...will check it out now!!
  16. Cheers lad, appreciate it...Was very very happy with this big fella. Not sure if anyone knows why the larger ones tend to get black blotches on them? is it from them rubbing that spot on coral? Would love to hear from anyone in the know? Cheers aye , Jimmy
  17. G'Day all, Jimmy from NQ here Was passing through my local fishing store today and noticed a big display of Tilsan Minnows on sale. They were awesomely priced and figured I will give them to all my young nieces and nephews for xmas present and also keep a few myself. I ended up buyin the whole display, I could resist. They were clearing them out because they were discontinued I think. $13.50 down to $8. So I bought all 40 of them, They are in a stack of colours and slightly different to the Tilsan Bass apparently (diff depth and slight chubbier). They gave them to me for $7 each cos i bought the whole damn lot... anyway would love to hear of anyone having success on these and are they good or what. Figured i could use them for flatty, bass, sootys and jack up here?? Love to hear you advice , cheers hey Jimmy
  18. Good to hear you worked it our mate....Those hooks are so darn tiny. Please tell me they are strong enough to not straighten on a descent fish?? Has anyone had them straighten? They are so small but they really do look sharp

Cheers boys, yeh the trout sure do eat well but bugger gettin ciguatera. Heard its a bit like ross river fever from mozzies. Knocks you around for several months at a time followed by good times and then bad again. It would be terrible to catch
