  1. It's true that some of those fish have no real value but the list is for real enthusiasts. Besides there have been plenty of trophy fish for the table. All the oddballs went back to the sea.
  2. I may have caught a grass whitening at Newport years ago but if so it was very small. This is a list of fish excluding the countless crabs, octopus and squid my family and friends have caught from these locations.
  3. I have made a list of the different types of fish that I have caught while fishing land based in Pittwater over the last five years. Using Pilchard and prawn as bait we have landed more than 30 different fish species in two spots alone. Here is the list and some of the fish you may have never heard of. Please discuss and tell me your thoughts. 1Trevally 2bream 3Flathead 4Tailor 5Snapper 6Aussie Salmon 7Jew Fish 8King Fish 9Yellow Tail 10 Leather Jacket 11Flounder 12Bonito 13watsons Bonito 14Pike 15Grinner 16Samson Fish 17Spangled Emperor 18black rock cod 19port Jackson Shark 20Blind Shark 21Banjo Shark 22Shovel Nose Shark 23Sting Ray 24Numb Ray 25Red Rock Cod 26!Eel 27Trumpeter 28Tarwine 29Wrasse 30Seargent Baker 31Toad Fish Also attatched are two photos of the last two outings to the Northern Beaches.
  4. Just a quick report. Fished Newport with my brother for a few hours yesterday around early afternoon. Using whole Pilchard with gang hooks I landed a 35 cm Bream and a 54 cm Salmon. My brother caught a 53 cm Salmon and his biggest ever Flathead that went 81cm. Check out the mug on this guy and I'm not talking about the fish.....
  5. I fished Pitwater last Friday by myself at the old faithful spot that always seems to produce fish. I caugh my second biggest ever Aussie Salmon with the help of another fisherman who offered to net it for me. It went 67 cm. That day I also caught a 42 cm Tailor, a Blue Swimmer Crab and a 31 cm Bream that was released. I hooked something awesome straight after I caught the Salmon. After a long fight it cut my line underneath the wharf. I was using 5 kg main line with a 13.5 kg leader but it still wasn't enough to stop this massive critter. Today I fished the same spot with my brother. I caught a 31 cm Bream and two Trevally around 32 cm. I also met an old bloke who was with his wife. I witnessed him catching a massive 49 cm Black Bream. I said to him he should take a photo and send it to the Sydney News paper weekend fishing competition. I think it would go very close to being a Fish Raider Black Bream record. Right at the end of the day my brother caught a respectable 27 cm bream. I was hoping for some King Fish and they did show up. I brought much heavier gear today in hope of catching one but they were very fussy. My brother hooked one but with his light outfit he had little to chance of landing it. Maybe next time we can finally get one. We packed up around 4 pm and headed home.
  6. Yes, I was on the Pittwater side. One of the ferry drivers told me not to fish there yet people fish there all the time. It's such a great spot too. I have lost more monster fish off that wharf than any other fishing spot in Sydney.
  7. I hit Palm Beach yesterday for a solo session. I managed to score three keepers including a 45 cm Tailor, a 32 cm Trevally and my first ever Watsons Leaping Bonito. All fish fell to Pilchards on gang hooks. The weather was windy with the odd shower but it was good to land some solid fish after losing a couple of behemoths over the past couple of weeks. I look forward to catching some salmon once the water cools in Pittwater. The next few months should be very exciting.
  8. lol If I had a silver or bronze coin for everytime I heard that one........ ps it was my brothers I phone
  9. After some steady catches of flathead and bream over the last couple of weeks there has been enough fish around to keep me interested and coming back to the Northern Beaches. While the fish I have caught have only been small, between 25-40cm, I felt a good haul was just around the corner. Yesterday my brother (Dean) and I hit up our favorite fishing spot. It was blowing a gale. I told Dean "I think we're in for a tough day." I couldn't have been more wrong. We chucked in some chook pellets mixed with tuna oil to entice the fish. The session started off slow with only some pickers landed. Seemingly out of no where Dean and I get a double hook up. Dean landed a 25cm Flounder and I landed a 30cm Tailor. I was starting to feel a bit better about things. With our whole pilchards on a snell rig with size 3/0 suicide hooks we have had many successful outings. Pilchards seem to be the bait of choice in Pittwater. A boat pulled up on the pontoon and I we had to relocate to the jetty above the pontoon. My brother got snagged. While he was redoing his rig I hook up. I jokingly say to brother "Dean! Help!." He hesitated but eventually came over with the net. I landed a healthy 32 cm Bream that put up a good fight. After the boat left we moved back down to the pontoon. Something big took my pilchard and started taking line. After a short battle I landed a 65cm Flathead. After some photos with the big girl I sent her back home. She shot off into the depths like a torpedo. My brother landed two more fish in quick succession A 32cm Bream and a big porky bream that went 38cm. Just before 7.30pm we finished the day the way we started, with a double hook up. My brother landed a 31cm Tailor and I called mine for a crab or octopus. As I reeled it in Dean waited with the net eagerly anticipating what would come up. He yelled "it's a crab!" It was a big Blue Swimmer. Dean panicked and swiped at it with net. As the crab danced on the edge of the net I yelled "oh nooo!!! devastating." After a couple more feeble attempts to net the crab she fell away into the abyss. We left with a haul that included 2 Tailor, 3 Bream and a Flounder. Although the wind hampered conditions we still managed to score a few. Not a bad day with some great quality eating fish destined for the pan.
  10. I looked at google, apparently there is a winji jimmi in Lake Macquarie too. That was the first link that appeared in the search results.
  11. I have never heard of it but I like the name. I may have to google it.
  12. Yeah it was on a hook we got lucky..... Three times
  13. It's a candidate for man vs wild. I would love to see bear grylls chow down on a frog fish. Also looks can be deceiving, e.g red rock cod, ugly fish but tastes great.
  14. It was a hot bite yesterday. Just one of those days were almost everything we did paid off and produced results. My brother and I fished our usual spot at Newport. We arrived at 5 pm and fished the runout tide. The flathead we caught were thick and full of roe. They were everywhere on a day that yielded 3 quality lizards. I caught the second biggest lizard I have ever caught. It measured 65cm and was not far off my pb. She went back into the water to breed and terrorise more bait fish. My second flathead went 57cm and this one was destined for the table. I also caught a bream that was just legal. I released the little tyke to grow bigger. Apart from Flathead we also cleaned up on Blue swimmer crabs. We caught 3 in total, I caught 2 and my brother 1. A nice by catch on standard fishing rods. My brother also scored a nice lizard that went 63 cm. the only disappointment for the session was a fish I dropped at the end of the day. It possibly could have been fish of the day. The fish started to peel line off the reel and spat the hooks before I had the chance to set them properly. It was an erratic take and the fish stated to bounce all over the place. We thought it could have been a good size snapper but I guess we'll never know. So far 2015 has began well and if the past couple of trips are anything to go by my bro and I are in for a good year of fishing.
  15. Just a quick report, It has been a while between drinks for my brother and I. My last three outings have proved unproductive. Over the last month and a bit there has been little to crow about. The water in Pittwater is a dark murky green at the moment and in desperate need of a flush out. Yesterday we spotted several poddy mullet and plenty of white bait but there were very few yellow tail around which suggests the ecosystem is dysfunctional. The outfit I was using was less than ideal. It was a combination of a rod and reel taken and combined from two separate devices. I was immensely unhappy with the result. Still it did its job of casting and retrieving. My brother and I fished our usual spot at Newport around mid to late afternoon. We used a burley of chicken pellets mixed with tuna oil. We caught some small tailor that were just under legal. Then my brother caught a big blue swimmer crab. He called it for a bream! Bahahahaha! Just as we were running out of bait my beat up old egg beater reel started to sing. The fish took a good first run. After a short fight, a healthy 60cm flathead was landed. After a few photos she was released. Shortly after we packed up and headed for home. A cracker of a fish to kick off 2015.
  16. Your eyes would pop out of their sockets if u saw the size of this of this school. It was something special. I'm glad so many people have found our amateur attempts at catching salmon so highly amusing. heh -_-
  17. Fair call dude, Mike and I are very amateur when it comes to trolling. The scariest part is the school was so thick and widespread it was almost impossible not to troll through it. If the salmon are that ravenous when you go out on the weekend you will be in for a cracking day.
  18. After land based fishing on the Northern Beaches for God knows how long, it was time for a change of scenery. I have a neighbor who lives down my street that has a boat and loves to fish. We both agreed to give the harbor a go. Tuesday morning he arrived at my place at 9am. We drove to the nearest bait and tackle store and picked up some frozen prawns and squid. After arriving at Tunks Park around 10am we noticed many fledging bream in the water. This was a promising omen. Mike drove us to Sow and Pigs Reef. It was choppy and windy but the fish didn't seem to care and nor did we. Fishing with a Cheaser Yellow Tail Rig, (Something I'd never done before) I decided to experiment in order to see if a yellow tail rig would work on Leather Jackets. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that it did. First drop and I was onto a Jacket. These ultra sharp hooks designed for catching yellow tail also work on Jacket. For the first couple of hours at Sow and Pigs Reef we used plenty of burley. This consisted of chook pellets mixed with tuna oil. I landed 2 more solid Jacket, a 45cm Flathead and a 31cm Trevally. Mike scored a jacket to open his account. It went slightly quiet and we decided to try the sand flats of Rose Bay. Here all we caught were undersize reds. We fished Sow and Pigs again on the Run in tide for nothing. Looking over towards Middle Head there were bait fish busting up everywhere and the sea gulls were in a frenzy. Mike put a chrome lure on the end of his hand line and we decide to troll for whatever was making causing the commotion. As I drove the boat straight through the school, Mike yelled "I'm on." I put the boat in neutral and after 5 minutes a torpedo like Salmon was on the boat. We tried our luck again and sure enough we were on again! This time I landed the fish and it was a carbon copy of the last one, a stout and fat Salmon. Around mid evening we fished the last hours before sundown in Middle Harbor at Mike's secret spot. I discarded my yellow tail cheaser rig and adopted a more conventional method. A light rod with a size 2/0 suicide hook ball sinker and 20lb leader. Fishing with Pilchard chunks as bait I caught a 43cm Flathead and about 4 Tailor between 30-36cm. It was a magic day and the harbor was teeming with marine life. Our total for the day was 12 legal fish Me 10 and Mike 2. It was one of the most enjoyable and productive days of fishing I have ever had. Picture is on its way.
  19. I have tried circle hooks before and they take a bit of getting use to, they are not ideal for our set up of 3/0s on a gang hook snell. 3/0, 2/0 or 4/0 suicide hooks are a better choice for how we fish and what we target.
  20. A couple of fish spat the hooks and the noahs arc broke his line! He called it for a Kingie, he was using 20lb leader as well. There are some very large critters at that spot.
  21. I fished the Northern Beaches with my brother yesterday. Our usual spot provided again. I caught a big octopus that was close to the largest I have ever landed. It was real escape artist. It continually creeped its way out of its confines. We decided to let it go. Meanwhile my brother lost several big fish. I assured him that the best of us have days like that. He was pissed! I managed to land a 58cm Flathead that salvaged a day where many fish were lost. It was a pleasant way to spend a Melbourne cup afternoon.
