Bull sharks!!
I stayed in a holiday place up there a few years ago and the place backed on to the canals. It the week I was up there I caught two little bull sharks

Hey mate,
I love the generation black rods. I have four of them. My favourite is the pinster. I mainly use plastics and I get plenty of distance casting little plastics off the shore.

Pretty sure they are Eagle Ray's. I have seen them like this at Forster. It is Amazing watching them swim around like that.

They aren't easy to catch but at least you hooked them. How big would you say the fish was? I was on a boat yesterday and lost half a dozen also. There are lots of them around at the moment.

The fish would of been legal I think. Looked like it would of been 70-75cm but it has been a while since I caught one so I might be wrong

Hey All,
Decided to head down to one of my favourite spots this morning. The family is having a BBQ this afternoon so o thought I would try and catch some fish for the BBQ. got down to the spot around 6am and the wind was blowing. Rigged up a squid jig and in two casts had a squid. So I quickly rigged up the big rod and threw the squid out live.
Tried for a few more squid but could not manage any. I decided to try and get some live yakkers and while I was rigging up for that the big rod bends over and the line is peeling off. I run over and strike and nothing is there. I bring in the bait and the head and half the body is gone. I was looking at the bait thinking how dos I not hook the fish.
I made what was left over of the squid presentable and threw it out again. About 30min pass and I finally have my first yakka. As I'm taking it off the hook and putting it in the bucket the rest of the squid is taken. The rod bent over and the line was screaming again and when I got to the rod the fish was gone. It was turning out not to be my morning.
I have now lost two fish. All I was thinking was that they had to be kingfish. I re rigged to cast out the live yakka. The bait must of been in the water two minutes and the rod buckled over and peeling line again. This time I got the rod and set the hook. Finally I was onto a fish. The fish ran straight to the mored boat and I just managed to turn the fish before it busted me off. I was only using 15lb line so I knew I had a good fight ahead. The fish took some more runs and each run was as powerful as the last. By the third run I was convinced it was a King. I had the fish near the wharf and it ran straight under it. I got on my knees with half the rod on the water and some how got the fish out and finally surfaced. It was such a good sight to see this nice kingfish come up. I walked him around to an area where I could net him and he had one more run under the wharf and again I got him back out. I have him on the surface and he is not doing much. I go to scoop him up and he runs again this time he busts me off. I fall and sit on the wharf and just think to my self what do I have to do. I was angry and upset. I tried to catch some more live bait but for an hour I could not get a single bit of live bait. I thought to myself I need to catch something for the BBQ. I had a few prawns so tried for some leather jackets and in half an hour I had four. After that I decided to pack up and head home.
On the way home I was trying to think of the Positives. The one I came up with is that it has been about 6 years since I last caught a kingfish and made it my goal this year to do my best to learn how to catch kingfish constantly off the shore. So after today I'm on my way to achieve this but right I'm still shattered and the events of today will be going around my head all week with what ifs

When you say a fish that takes you under the wharf and breaks you off its a surgeon fish , we fish 50 pound line and that break you off like its 4 pound line it looks very similar to groper
Never thought of a surgeon. I have never hooked one but I know they have some power and the fish I lost had some. So you might be right

thats a odd fish to land that groper!! but it was good. they put up a really good fight!! where you fishing around rose bay or somewhere there?

Nice catch - those jackets can be pretty hard to hook sometimes.
I fish down at Kurraba pretty regularly and sounds like I had a pretty similar experience to you.
Just before xmas I was fishing off the Neutral Bay end about 5pm with half a green prawn casting diagonally back towards the moorings at Neutral Bay.. Nothing much going, then felt a tiny bite (thought I'd leave it and see what happened).. about 5 seconds later something absolutely smashes the prawn and heads straight under the wharf. Had the drag on pretty tight and it was taking line as soon as it took the bait - eventually the line must have rubbed on the pylon because the line snapped really cleanly. Never found out what it was.. but it put up a great fight, would have loved to even gotten a look at it. Encouraging to know that there a big fish pretty close to the shore.

Hey mate,
I have only been down there a few times now and have had not had a bad session. Either catching big tailor, bream and trevally or leather jackets. I have seen some kings swimming around the wharf and then swim out to the moorings so I always make sure I have a live bait out now.
With the jackets you just have to strike at the right time. I find they don't have a normal bite but more of a suck and pull. Normally I have a little slack in the line and as soon as I see the slightest movement in the line I strike I always seem to miss the first few then after a couple of misses I seem to figure out the bite and catch a few quickly.

Hey guys,
Late report only had time to write it up. I was able to get out for a fish Saturday morning and even if the wind looked like it was going to be strong. Got to the ferry wharf just after first light. I started the morning throwing some squid jigs around and in about 5 minutes I had two squid.
I quickly put one out holding for a kingfish around the mored boats. I then decided to try for a few yakkers and in no time I had 5. So I quickly put of a live yakker. So by 6:30 I had a live squid and yakker out hoeing for a kingfish or something so come by. While I was waiting I caught two more squid and was thinking maybe this might be my day because normally i struggle to catch squid. After a few hours and still no pelagic fish I changed the rig on my little rod and tried for some leather jackets. Took a few minutes until I finally hooked a fish after continually missing the bite. I hooked the first fish and it ran straight under the wharf. Somehow I managed to get it out and was bringing it to the surface and then it decided to have another run. Again I just managed to stop it from busting me off and I got it to the surface. To my surprise it was a juvenile grouper and the first omens have ever caught.
I let him go and he swam off. The next hour or so was fun. On that time I caught 7 leather jackets. Five of them I kept for a feed. A few little snapper, bream and wrase.
After that I hooked on to something big under the wharf. Just like the grouper I managed to stop it once and I saw a big brown shape start to come up. Then it had one more run and this time the fish won.
After this the wind really started to pick up and decided to call it a day and go home with a feed of leather jackets.

Hey mate,
I have not fished Woy Woy for a while but when I use to I always started at the the T wharf that the ferry goes to. Which you can see at the right of the screen shot below
Also you can fish off the enclosed swimming area which is just down from the T wharf . You will catch most species like bream, flathead, whiting and if you have the right bait blackfish but I mostly fish for leather jackets around this area. I use a small long shank hook with a a little bit of peeled prawn and that normally dose the trick. Hope this helps

Hi All,
I'm currently fishing in neutral bay off one of the ferry wharfs. Just caught this fish while after leather jackets. I think it's a little brown grouper (if it is will be my first)
It gave me on hell of a fight on the 4lb line and leader I was using. Caught on a little peeled prawn

Hi All,
Spending the weekend up at at Forster in my holiday van. Huge storms up here last night and was thinking maybe I would not get a chance to fish this morning. I woke up around 5:30 looked outside and the weather looked ok. Got my rod and plastics and headed down to the wharf. Not many people around and the water was very dirty for Forster after all the rain up here. Rigged up a #3 black and gold squidgey to hope to get a flathead. A few casts in and bang got my first flathead.
I didn't have a ruler with me but would not have been legal. Put him back and the very next cast I was on again. This time the fish felt a little better.
Put it back in the water and was pretty happy with two fish. A few casts later I was on to another fish about the same size
Over the moon with three fish in about 6 casts I put the fish back and the very next cast I was on to another fish. This one was the best of the day
After this a school of kingfish can through. I put on a pooper and they followed the lure all the way to the wharf with out taking it. I went through a bunch of lures and all they did was follow it. After having enough of the kingfish teasing me I was pretty hungry so called it a morning pretty happy with four nice flathead.

Hi mate
I have used whole and half pillys under floats of a night at little manly cove. You will get plenty of tailor. I normally get fish in the 30 - 45cm range.

Hi mate,
I have fished the Forster break wall many times. I find that there is a two and a half hour difference sometimes I feel like it's different but most of the time I get the change and get a good 60-90 minutes in before I have to start walking the wall with my bait. Hope this helps

Hi All,
Have not posted for a while or fished for a while because of a busy winter but now it's summer i have decided to make it my goal to be more consistent on plastics and catch a range of species on them. I decided today I would hit the cooks up at Kendrick park. Since I catch a train to and from work I thought I would just catch a train to Tempe straight after work. I packed a few plastics and jig heads and grabbed my little daiwa rod that goes to 3pcs and went to work. After work I caught the train to Tempe station and walked down to the river from there. Arrived at around 6:20 about and hour before high tide so thought I was in for a chance to get something maybe even a Jew.
I decide to to use a #4 silver fox squidgey. So started walking the bank and got a few bumps. It was about half and hour later I got a hook up and brought in a nice little flathead.
I did not have a ruler with me but my guess would be around 42cm. After I released him I continued to walk the shore. About 10min later I hooked up again and got another little flathead
This one would of been pushing legal length. Put him back in and continued on my way. A few casts later I snagged up on a rock which until this point I had done well in avoiding. Lost my plastic and leader. Walked over to the table to re rig and realised I left all my leader at home. Since it was starting to get dark and I was getting pretty hungry I called it a night. Was pretty happy to get two flathead in about an hour.

Hey mate,
I have fished Forster break wall many times for Jewfish but have never been successful. I have seen some huge fish caught over the years just never at the end of my line. Crossfire63 is right that lures work very well and more and more people are using them but if you are going to use bait octopus is the bait to use its just hard to catch but is defiantly the best bait off the wall.
Just plan to fish the turn of the tide when the current is not to strong. If you struggle to hold bottom you can always walk the wall with the bait. Also after dark you get a lot of sharks come through. I have caught plenty of bronze walers over the years everyone thinking they were a jewfish. Hope this helps.

Hi all,
Recently I have decided to give blades a go and get the hang of it over summer. For my first time giving them a go I decided to head down to pier 2 after work. I got down there about 6:15 and rigged up. I stayed down the back of the pier because there were a few people at the top.
I started by casting along the pylons and working the lure beside them. Had a few casts then I hooked something, got excited until I realised it was just a dead weight. Pull it up and it's half a net with the handle broken. Untangled my line put the net beside the Bin and went about casting again. 30min had passed then bang finally a hook up. After a good little fight on the 5lb line I was using I pull up a little snapper. I didn't have a measuring tape so I don't know how big it was but I reckon it would of went close to legal.
After that the wind picked up and making life hard casting near the structure so I decided to go home happy.
Just a quick question I using the blade like a plastic. Let it hit the bottom then 3 jigs up repeat. Is this the best technique for blades or is there better techniques?

Forster for 3 weeks. Rotating around fishing for Jew off the break wall spinning for flathead early morning and late afternoon or going outside to the FAD in hope of dolphin fish and kingfish

I've never caught a yellowtail yet - but I am also not targeting them! When the Slimies are running you can usually get them in the marina, along with herring (also off the breakwall with Sabiki jigs.)
Squid .... very hit & miss. I've had a couple have a go at a diving lure when fishing over weed beds, but never on a consistent basis. Usually get them off the rocks at the end of the beaches, eg southern One Mile.
Mullet & pike are the 2 preferred baits by most if targetting jewies on the wall.

I normally use mullet but no luck yet. Might look around and see what other live bait I can find and get stuck into plastics off the wall.

Hey everyone
I have been fishing Forster for years and one thing I have always struggled to catch is live bait like yellowtail and squid. I have caught mullet in the Forster marina and pike around the lake but no yellowtail and squid. Just wondering if anyone has and spots to catch live bait?
