  1. I don't want to be one of those blokes! Not a risk taker, Don't care how big the fish is. That's why I'm on here as much as I can trying to read and ask questions. I'd never ask about anyones secret spot, but I would always ask about safety aspects about a spot I intend to fish myself. To someone relatively inexperienced like us - it pays to ask as much as you can and hopefully someone who has some experience, be it good or bad, will give you advice that may just save you from serious injury or worse. At the end of the day, if you're level headed, with a bit of common sense and don't take stupid risks this is the greatest pastime in the world. For me - hearing the pounding waves against rock beats the tranquil serenity of a little lake somewhere remote - but each to their own. Soon I'll be posting pics of PBs from the rocks and it will be thanks to the help I got on this website - for both fishing tips and the fact that I'm still alive to post them!
  2. Lucky for my wallet I'm at work today. These comments are a definite gee up!
  3. Thanks for the tip John
  4. Thanks John. When you say to use two swivels when beach fishing - is this just to eliminate line twist? So even when using a paternoster I'll need a normal swivel plus a 3 way?
  5. The scary thing is that I'm like that too - with everything really. No middle ground - I'm either in it all the way or nothing at all. Many a day I've walked into the Tackle store to grab a couple fo hooks or sinkers and walked out with a couple of hundred bucks worth of gear. Who cares - better than punting, smoking or drinking (heavily - all the time)
  6. Hi guys, Was wondering if some of the experienced fishos who've spent some time on the rocks in Kurnell could part with some advice. I have fished on the low, well protected stones at the bottom of the steps. That whole area pretty much walking right facing the water right up until the second set of steps further up. I always wear cleats, even in these relatively "safe" (if you're not stupid) conditions and always pay attention to the water. I've been going there weekly (or almost) for over a year or so. Even though I am not by any means a risk taker - I won't go down to a ledge that has water washing up on it, I always wear cleats and always have my eyes on the water. I am just really after any advice any one can give me with regards to safety in this area, and also some Fishing tips wouldn't go astray! Planning to use Cunji, Crabs (if I can get them) and Prawns. I have an Alvey 650A5 and a matching 13' Beachmaster stick. I'd love to learn as much as I can about safety first, then fishing second. Thanks in advance for your wisdom!
  7. Thanks fishingphase. Yeah, it's definitely a different ball game with the Alvey. Like a lot of things I guess - when you use it for the first time you either love it or hate it. I love it
  8. Thanks Yowie. Might be heading to Bombo beach next week - I'm giving it a throw down there for sure. Never done any beach fishing actually - mainly to not having the right gear. I bought the Alvey outfit so I can improve my rock fishing results - If I hook a fish big enough to give me a bruise or two for not having a belt I'll be stoked! I'm always looking for tips and techniques in this forum, and I'm always getting gold advice from the senoir fishos out there. Really appreciate it - especially all the safety tips that I hope all the (fairly) newbies like me are following.
  9. Hi Guys, After some great tips from reading posts here in FR, I decided to purchase an Alvey 650A5 and matching 13' Beachmaster Alvey Rod. I was sick of getting smoked on my Stradic 2500 and Catana Combo! So off to Kurnell I went... The plan was to spend the day getting used to the Alvey and the Pole Vault attached to it - just a bit different to what I was used to before! It was spooled up with 25 pound Schneider Klear, and Cunje and prawns as bait. Got to Kurnell at low tide so I decided that I might have a look around fro some crabs as the swell was low and I remembered reading on here that grouper and bream love em. I couldn't find any of the red ones - but I got a few small black ones. Anyhow - on my very first cast with the Alvey I was suprised that I managed to get it to go where I wanted it to go with no twists or tangles! As I was mentally patting myself on the back, the crab hadn't even made it down half a meter before it got smashed! I grabbed the handle and started winching.. I thought it would have been a drummer or a grouper but it was a fat 36cm bream... Not a bad start I thought.. The rest of the day was spent getting used to the new combo, trying to cast a little more accurately and trying some different rigs to avoid snags. One thing I found though is that using the larger, sharper, stronger hooks on this outfit meant that I snagged MUCH more than I used to - but I guess that's the price you pay if you want to upgrade your catch. Caught a couple of small drummer which went back, and a big fat kelp which definately went back. Even though I didn't get much - it was a productive day learning how to use the new stuff...better days ahead.... Next time out I'm going to try spoon sinkers on a paternoster rig - same spot same bait and outfit.
  10. Looks like you've come up with the goods agian, Blackfish! http://www.reefwatchvic.asn.au/maps/herring_fc.htm Female Herring Cale it is!
  11. Thank you again for all your replies guys. Cheers Yowie, I will next time! Hope you all had a fantastic Australia Day!
  12. Hope I wouldn't be stretching the friendship if I ask what this one is.... I fish Kamay a lot, there's so many species there....Drummer, Luderick, Bream, Tarwhine, Leatherjackets, Numerous Wrasse species, Kelpies, Wirrah....and that's just what I've caught! I always see divers there when I fish. These two fish (Scaleyfin and the one below) had me stumped though...thought I'd ask the experts!
  13. Hi Everyone, Caught this today fishing at Kamay National Park in Kurnell. Thought it was a small drummer when I was reeling it in, but it had a white stripe and a different upper fin. I released it anyway, not being sure what it was, but I'm still curious to know. Any ideas? Thank you!
