  1. Hi everyone,

    A hypothetical question:

I was looking at the pics from the Blackfish social at Lambeth Park and it got me thinking (now thats a dangerous thought) :1prop:

That boardwalk decking area most of you guys were fishing from was pretty crowded and resembled Pitt st during peak hour :1yikes: now this is my question, what would have happened if a member of the public just happened to be walking by and slipped on some green weed that had been carelesslly left out and hurt themselves, who would be liable?

The person using that weed? everyone in its immediate vicinity? or Fishraider due to it being an organised site event? It would be an absolute legal nightmare for all concerned if something like that happened.

With more events now being planned on the social calendar its probably a good thing to look into if it already hasn't  As much as we all dont like to see accidents, they can happen but at least there will be the peice of mind that one wont have to deal with the financial burden as well.

  2. i have often wondered this also.

most people say salmon are crap, but more and more they are being acepted as a table fish

    so who knows

has anyone actually tried a pj

I havn't tried a PJ yet (nor do I want to) but I have tried Salmon and they are truly awful, much worse than Trevally infact!!!

  3. Plenty of Trevally in the bay at the moment, the bigger ones arn't too bad on light tackle but are still a bit of a pain when they are all thats being caught. I generally move on if the Trevally take over.

I cant believe people consider them as good eating :1yikes::1yikes:

  4. no probs Cap3, Mal Florence, Ron Calcutt and Rod Harrison were great pioneers werent they? Would also love to get my hands on the fishermans world vids.

I think we are showing our age here.... :1prop:

Unfortunately i dont reemember John Mellion though.

Danielinbyron...they use to be available in my local vid as well, thats where i had seen them but i havent been there in years and when i returend the place was full of dvd's only....Geoff was the bloke who gave me the idea of using fish heads as bait for big snapper...i can still remember him using a huge bonito head and throwing it into the wash and getting slammed by a 10 kilo plus red.

I will keep looking out for them and will let those interested know how i go.

John Mellion was better know for his acting talents, one of his movies that comes straight to mind is Crocodile Dundee. I dont really know if he was a fisho at heart like most of us here, but the series of fishing vids that he hosted were great veiwing, his Aussie ocker presence gave these vids a real comical perspective. Wish I could remember their name

  5. But also said that broad and costly restrictions should not be undertaken before localised studies have been done.

What a load of rubbish, one only needs to have a look at Botany Bay as an example, despite the ongoing pressure from recreational anglers, fish stocks are substantially better now than they were 5 years ago, Why??? because the the Pro's are gone, dont need to be a rocket scientist to work that one out.

I've seen the difference first hand, I fish Botany Bay regularly and have done for the last 30 years, over the last couple of years not only have the numbers of certain species increased out of sight but also their size as well.

And these crackpots wanna carry on and waste money on 'studies' pay me the six figure salary and I'll do the study for you, it'll be short and sweet!!!

  6. Im on Optus cable , using a 4 year old SB4200 modem , this is pretty much my average download speed :

    Test run on 08/08/2006 @ 10:51 PM

    Mirror: Optus

    Test type: Cable (15MB Test)

    Your connection speed:

    kbps: 7496.33

    KB/s: 937.04

    Mbps: 7.5

Time to download 15Mb file : 17 seconds

Apparently , the new 5101i modems get twice this speed.

    Ross

I've got Optus cable as well but my modem is the SB5100

    My download speed for the 15mb test was;

    Test run on 08/08/2006 @ 11:03 PM

    Mirror: Optus

    Test type: Cable (15MB Test)

    Your connection speed:

    kbps: 10270.52

    KB/s: 1283.82

    Mbps: 10.27

Netic, 5gig/sec not possible mate. To put that into perspective, thats 300gig a minute which is like downloading close 60 DVD's in 1 minute. F*** me, I gotta see this :074:

  7. About 15 years ago one of the local video shops had a special section set aside on their shelves to cater for the local pub's fishing club.

I've never seen so many fishing videos in the one place as what this joint had, I'd start at one end and by the time I finished watching all of them I'd start all over again cause' I never got sick of watching them :1prop:

I remember watching some videos with Geoff Thomas bloody good ones too from memory but I cant remember if they were the ones you were talking about. I miss having access to those vids, awesome action and no bloody adds like we have now on all the commercialised crap they put out

    I'd also be interested if anyone knew where to get a hold of the above mentioned vids as well as;

The full Mal Florence DVD/vid set,

Ron Calcutt series, from memory were called ''A Fishermans World"

    Rod Harrison series

There was also a series of vids that the late John Mellion hosted which I enjoyed, anyone remember their name?

There's more but these will do for now, I'm buggered if I can remember them as well.

Inspin, sorry for hijacking your thread mate but this seemed like the ideal place to ask, maybe you remember some of these and wouldn't mind getting your hands on some of them

  8. yep, most of mine are shimano but has everyone already forgot the old mitchell 499?

    Stallo

I've got both the 499 and 499 Pro, the French built these reels with only one thing in mind, they are built tough with enough power to pull in a mini bus. By todays standards they are fairly agricultural but back then they were equivalent ib toughness to maybe todays Saltiga's and Stella's.

The 499 Pro I have is still brand new in the box, unused, not a mark on it, wonder how much it would be worth to a collector????

By the way I dont mind Shimano but my reel of choice would have to be Daiwa.

  9. Sorry mate I forgot to address your other question.

As far as the Aero is concerned, I mentioned it the other day in another post. My brother in law picked one up on Ebay brand new from England. They are a nice looking and solidly made reel, they come with a spare spool and as mentioned before, the aluminium spool is around 3mm thick. Apart from playing around with one I havn't had the opportunity to fish with them yet, they look better and feel tighter than the BTR's and if look and feel is anything to go by I'll give them the thumbs up.

My brother in law is pretty impressed with his one if thats any consolation, whether they are better than the current BTR's???? who knows, only time will tell.

  10. Wirlez,

    The rods that I have my baitrunners on are as follows;

3500B-Wilson Live Fibre 6-8kg blank, I cant remember the blank number

    4500B- Silstar Powertip 701SWM & Ugly Stick GB1800

    6500B- Silstar Powertip 701SWH

No top of the range stuff here, just good honest, well proven and well performing rods at a price that wont break the bank.

    cap, that is correct.

But I guess dropping down to a 4500B would allow for more money to be spent on a rod. :1prop:

Still .. I don't really want to stretch it any further then 160-180 =\

I was just about to edit my post and mention giving you a call at King Rods but I didn't like the chances of picking up a custom rod in that price range, how wrong I was :1yikes:

  11. Hey Wirlez

    For a 6500b - Wilson Live Fibre Texalium 8-15Kg is a perfect but expensive +- ( $300 ) match.

Have you considered the 3500 or the 4500?

6500Bs go for $190 to $250 - Shop around a bit first. If you get them for $80 to $120 let me know and I'll buy a box full!!

Spool up with good quality braid 30-80lb depending on what you are after.

In my opinion they are very good value for money reels.

    Hope this helps

    cheers

    inhlanzi

PS King Rods one of the sponsors of the site makes very good rods too. Give Saqa a shout.

I think he meant that he was budgeting $80-$120 for a rod to suit the Baitrunner :1prop:

  12. Tom,

From memory my fish/icebox is around 850mm long x 500mm wide and close to 450mm high.

It is made from an extremely hard and durable poly material similar to the orange coloured Tropical iceboxes. I would definitely be looking at this material rather than fibreglass when being used for sitting.

I bought mine from Fish N Dive at Taren Point a few years ago but I'm sure if you do a qiuck Google search you can check out their website and maybe find some more distributors.

  13. Mate, I think you got buckley's, I doubt that something with those dimensions will hold a minimum of 60 litres.

You will need to get something custom built but again, with only a maximum overall height of 32cms the ice box will need to be longer and wider than the area you have to play with.

Cant you fold the seat down out of the way when you are fishing? Better still take it out, get a bigger ice box than what you originally wanted and use it as a seat.

Thats what I use as a helm seat on my boat, I simply made up a removable padded top that goes on the lid and its extremely comfortable, best of all it looks just like a bought one. I cant remember the dimensions of mine but the brand is Icey-Tek, it's capacity is 70 litres and holds ice for over a week in the searing heat.

  14. Mate, dont mean to be picky but as far as low profile baitcasters go (& many other products as well) Daiwa is miles ahead of Shimano. If you were so worried about the cosmetics of the reel why would you buy the Curado in the first place, it isn't exactly the prettiest reel on the market. For roughly the same price as a Curado you could have picked up a TDA 153HST which is a far superior reel ( both technically & cosmetically) and if you include the money you spent on the upgrade you could have even had something like the Viento or Fuego.

To top it off, if you really wanted to, you could have also picked up an Erskine drag upgrade for the Daiwa baitcaster which would have put it leagues ahead of what you have now. There's nothing wrong wth the Shimano's but purely from a 'bang for your bucks' perspective, this new generation of mid priced Daiwa baitcasters really are an exceptional piece of equipment.

  15. I only saw them a few days ago for the first time

What i liked most about the reel is its balance, also looks great,

here is a pic of the 5000 model

    Pic of the 10000 model

    Interesting!!!!

The bottom one looks exactly like the one my brother in law picked up on Ebay, I think it was called the Aero? I had a play with it and it is a very solid reel. What really impressed me was the ability to change spools with the push of a button and also the guage of the aluminium used for the spool had to have been close to 3mm, extremely heavy duty stuff. If they are anywhere near as good as the trusted and proven BTR's then Shimano will be on a good thing.

Only one downside, its a pity they dont make a smaller Baitrunner thats comparable in size to a 1500-2000 series reel, there would be a big market for it.

  16. Two places I can think of that should have them in stock, if not they will do everything possible to get them in ASAP.

    1. Kyeemagh Bait & Tackle on Bestic Street Kyeemagh. The owner Gary will go out of his way to help.

    2. Fish 'N' Dive at Taren Point

These are the main two tackle shops that I frequent, prices and service are first class.

  17. mate you will be swimming with the king if you actually need more then 15kg of drag.

Deepwater jigging puts a tremendous amount of pressure on both your back and arms, the average person wouldn't even be able to fish a drag setting half that for any length of time let alone some of the drag pressures that are being talked about here.

  18. Dont know why they are putting one in Astrolabe Cove, a majority of that area is already a natural reef with rocky outcrops, weed beds and drop offs???

Would have made more sense to put one further upstream along the flat sandy areas in the middle of the bay or even further up off Ramsgate or Brighton.

I wonder how big these concrete balls are and how big an area they will cover?

  19. Is the fireline really fading? I reckon the colour is getting rubbed off as it goes thru the guides when its wet.

Ive got a couple of rods with pink fireline on em that has not faded or colour lost at all, both rods have titanium guides and quality reels.

However on my other rods which are cheap sub $100 the fireline colour comes out no matter what colour it is to start with and after 5-6 uses the braid is completely white. If i keep using it then it starts to fray and looks like scratched up cotton.

I really think that Berkley, being an American company, when they designed Fireline it was mainly intended for American lure fishos that fish the freshwater lakes for Bass. I dont fish freshwater personally but I'm pretty confident in saying that saltwater would play a big part in the Fireline's colour fade.

I also have Fireline on quality reels that runs through Titanium Sic guides on quality rods and it fades just as quick as it does on my cheaper combos. Maybe a combination of hot sun, and dried up salt particles caught up around the guides is the culprit, who knows?????

  20. Hey everyone,

I need three ribs in side my boat to be re welded as they have stress fractures runnning through them

is there any one out there that can help me? I will pay you in :beersmile: or $$ .

Just thought I would try my fellow fishraiders before taking it to a shop cause I am getting very high quotes for the job which I believe is very minor,so any help would be great

    John a.k.a coollamon

You can also MIG weld aluminium, TIG looks better but for what you want done under the floor, the welds wont be seen.

I dont know what the going rate for welding is right now but I reckon MIG would be cheaper than TIG.
