get yourself a waighted float mate, put a float stopper on your main line, put the float on then put a ball sinker on, tie a swivel on.then tie on a leader around 2mt long 20lb-40lb is plenty then tie your gang hooks on. Its the best rig to use of the rocks. As for spots try port kembla brakewall, hill 60,bass pt, the farm, mystics there's heeps of ledge's and beach's that hold aussie salmon most of the time. You will get 1 mate it wont take long.

I haven't tried fishing in and around port kembla yet. I'll have to give it a go in the next few weeks.

What these guys said is on the money davido

If you're using ganged hooks I wouldn't bother with a wire trace at all either.. current/wind allowing I just use 15lb mono - swivel - 5/0 gammies ganged.

I just add a star sinker on a short leader from a crossline if current or wind are up.

Off the beach I've been finding them at any tide, casting at the edges of white water, bordering deeper sections of water, using the above rig.

Also as someone else mentioned, they're not true salmon, and unless you cut out all the blood line & bleed em immediately upon capture, they're supposedly inedible.

Good luck with em man, they are great fun to catch, put on a damn good show!

Yeah I should try using mono instead of wire trace. Maybe setup to rigs on my two rods one with mono and one with wire, see how that goes.

Hi. Try stanwell park in the afternoon near the surf club. We bagged out on salmon there a couple of times. We use paternoster rig with 2 small hooks. One on the head and one at the back. Tie the tail of the pilchard on the trace using double half knot. We also get bream and flathead using the same setup. We usually catch aussie salmon when the water is calmer during the winter months. Btw, we use no. 2 to no 1/0 suicide hooks. Your success rate will increase hopefully when you try our setup.

Ill give stanwell park a visit, never thought of looking that way to fish, always looking south. Ill give your rig a go, hopefully i get something

Cheers guys, got lots to try out and think about

  2. Try the port kembla southern breakwall, walk about 200m up and cast out on the ocean side. Just fish with a regular running sinker to the swivel and then a heavier trace. You won't get snagged there as it is all sand (unless you go up towards the end it becomes snaggy).

Also if you travel around, Corrimal and Bombo beaches usually hold salmon most of the time. Use a pyramid sinker on a paternoster rig and make sure you are fishing the gutter.

Pilchards usually never fail, but most fish baits will get salmon biting. And always remember that usually when you catch one salmon there is more around. Let me know how you go..

Yeah I will give Corrimal beach a go with ur setup. Went to Towrodgi beach today, a bit awkward with the beach being cut in half and deciding to climb down the sand to cast or cast up the sand cliff :074:

  3. Sounds like you've got it pretty much right mate for starters. I don't know if you are using a wire trace or not, i wouldn't bother. Depending on what else is around you might consider 20lb to 60lb mono as a trace. I only use wire for jackets if i want revenge when bottom fishing.

Fishing off the rocks i would attempt to fish as unweighted as possible and focus on wahsy and foamy areas. You can also try spinning with 15g up to 60g chromies if you feel like a change of pace but if you just want to catch one o would stick to the pillies.

Off the beach it probably isn't as critical how much weight you have as long as you can cast it. I would probably target the holes and gutters along the beach but the salmon will often roam. Hopefully one of the local fellas down your way can point you in the right direction as far as spots are concerned.

With the pillies you may want to try casting it out unweigthed or with a small ball sinker right on top of the ganghooks if required for casting distance or due to excess current. Let the pillie sink to the bottom (or close if it's snaggy) then lift it up with the rod and take up the slack, letting it sink slowly again similar as to how you would with a soft plastic. If your pillies aren't coping with this tecnique you can use salted pillies or wrap the baits in baitmate or stocking thread which makes them survive casting, pickers, sand and to some extent rocks.

On a side note i'm not sure if you know that Australian Salmon is quite different to eat from the nice pink fleshed stuff like Atlantic and Tasmanian Salmon you often get at the shop.

    Good Luck

Thanks for that, Ive had Aussie salmon a few times before, mate brought it over and cooked it up,was suprised the first time I ate it thinking, "is this salmon? but it isn't pink!?!?!". Now im hooked on that fish.

Yeah Im going to try a few different techniques, i tried unweighted pillies at kiama rocks afew days ago, squid kept playing with the bait. Might give it a crack this weekend again. Went out this arvo, felt some bites but came back with pillie heads. Maybe just down on luck :05:

    cheers for the advice

  4. Hey buddy,

The gippsland coast is full of great spots to fish...

A few that come to mind include:

    Mallacoota

    Lakes entrance

    oberon

The tambo river is a excellent place to chase black bream..

    The list is endless really..

Thanks for that, Ill jott them down and find it on the map

  5. Hey raiders,

Just as the title says, I want to know how to catch australian salmon from the beach and possibly rocks/breakwall. I currently use pillies on size 4/0 gangs, also have 5/0 gangs for the larger pillies that ive got. Only thing I am doing is going to the beach in the morning or afternoon when the tided is high and swell is atleast below 2m. I know someone told me about water temperature having to be warm, but how warm is it suppose to be. I currently fish the Illawarra region from Bellambi down to maybe Kiama.

    Love Salmon on the BBQ

    Cheers

  6. Gday Raiders

At the moment Im planning to go on a fishing trip with my mate around Victoria, since it coincides with a friends birthday in Melbourne. We will be doing this around the last week of November and maybe a week or so into December

I was wondering where abouts I should go for a fish and also camp out. Thinking of doing a mixture of rivers/lakes and also beaches/breakwalls. All land based fishing, don't have a boat at the moment.

any suggestions will be much appreciated

    Davido

  7. In the afternoon, I decided to go for a fish on Bellambi Jetty with my mate. Got to the jetty around 4pm, tried a few different rig setups on our light rods using prawns but I ended up using wash rig. for around 2 hours, while I was reeling in to recast BAM! Got hooked, drag was going nuts, had to adjust it abit to start reeling in. A few minutes later I finally won, having no net I decided to have my mate pull it up and winch it onto the jetty but the the line broke :ranting2:

I estimated the fish to be around 35-40cm seeing as we had a good look at it. Pretty pissed that happened but I learnt my lesson and I should of brought a net.

The yesterday I fished windang and hooked a pretty sizeable fish and had a 4min fight before the fish got the line snagged on rocks. So a bit depressed this week but can't wait to fish again!!

  8. true true davido were you the ozzie bloke up the end of the breakwall with the beenie on? you helped me get the tern off my hook last week? haha yeah for fishing off the breakwall I use a 12ft beach rod with a big reel not really sure on the schematics of it but its got about 30lb line and I use a 40lb leader might be pretty heavy to some but I figure better to go a bit heavier than get constant bust off's when you snag on the wall if you want Iv got another beach rod about 10ft long with a reel with about the same weight of line if you want to set up a day I'll bring it down and you can have a fish with it if you want and yeah pillies on a gang hook set up seem to work best tho I bought a pack of the premade ones but dont really like them due to the fact it has a swivel right on the first hook which I think spooks the fish off a little bit

Nah, I dont go out to the break wall at the sea tho i sometimes wear a beanie :biggrin2: , i sit more inside of windang near a red buoy fishing bream lol. Thanks for the help. I'll probably give this ago in a week or 2. Will have spare money for some new gear.

  9. what sort of gear and bait do u use? Im looking into getting gear setup for fishing of rocks and breakwalls, sort of sick of catching small bream in windang atm. Today around 3-6ish caught 3 bream under 20cm.

  10. Went fishing today in Windang and my friend caught a toadfish. It swallowed the hook and we cut the line and let it go. A few minutes later my friend catches the same toadfish and again swallowed the hook. Was quite interesting to see that happend. Had a bit of a laugh.

  11. Ive seen many a fisho at the northern end of East Corrimal Beach. Im pretty sure there is a shit pipe that juts out around there from memory.. Might be a good idea to give this weekend a miss but

might be from Bellambi sewer plant or a storm drain pipe

  12. I was wondering if its any good to do landbased fishing around Bellambi. Since I live walking distance from the beaches and jetty, was wondering if there is any good spots and what sort of fish is to be caught. Also what sort of gear i should use.

sorry for any inconvenience. Would just be a lot cheaper on fuel :D

  13. When fishing today 50m away from where I last fished, started to bite around 5:30pm to 7pm. Ended up catching 4 bream and my friend caught 2 bream. only 3 fish were just legal between 25-27cm. Most of the bream except 1 swallowed the hook

Though first fish I caught in a long time so I'm pretty stoked

Going again for a third day in Windang, hopefully catch bigger fish if lucky lol. Though was pretty fun sitting their with your mate talking and all of a sudden you get a bite and it scares the crap out of ya lol.

  14. Well done champ . Im not sure if its as good in winter , but in summer if you go on the opposite side of the river with live blood worms on smallish longshank Hooks you should be able to get a few lovely whiting and flathead on the drop , worth a try anyway .

Good report mate , good luck

I'm going to write this down and try it out some time

Well done fellas. It is easy to get hooked on fishing. There are plenty of luderick in this area and just west of the bridge near the bowling club. Have a look through the forum pages and get some tips on fishing for blackfish. Get out and give it a go. The hardest part is actually finding the weed to catch them on. They are great fun to catch and taste pretty good also if prepared properly.

    Good luck.

I've never fished west of the bridge before or thought about catching blackfish. Definetly have to try catch one

well 2 other newbies also were around Windang this weekend, the missus and I had a concerted go at Catching a salmon. note; we were targeting a species, good eh!. saw PW on the telly last week telling how to set up a salmon rig, spent a bit of time finding surf poppers and learning to tie knots on the cross swivels, putting gang hooks together, and studdied the sea to work out where the gutters were. Bunged on a pilli and cast in.............all up in 2 afternoon sessions we landed 9, 2 on pliiles and 7 on poppers, and lost a further 2 in the surf and hooked a seagull thing through the tag ring on his leg as he was chasing our rig. we are stoked, as we usually come backwith nowt , as we just bumble around and hang stuff on hooks. a bit of study and and planning was well worth the effort. did we see you up at the surf lifeguard carpark? we were in a big white van..........John and Jackie

I did see a lot of people fishing out at the break wall to the sea. I was near the park with the cleaning tables and BBQ

  15. Hello raiders,

I'm a first time poster and somewhat quite new to fishing (Did a little bit of fishing as a child but had a 10 year gap of no fishing only catching one fish in my life, Tailor of Windang beach :biggrin2: ).

Went out fishing in Windang in between the bridge and the mouth of the opening in the afternoon around 3:30pm to 6:00pm on low tide on the break wall Shellharbour, close to the cleaning tables. Me and my mate was using light gear with frozen prawns peeled targeting Bream.

Fishing for a while we started to get bites around 5pm, me being overly excited striked to early losing the fish and then getting the line snagged, tried my best to save the line but unfortunately had to cut it. My friend on the other hand was like "WOAH, I got something" reeling it in caught a Luderick :yahoo: (at the time we thought it was a Bream because we have never seen a Luderick before). The Luderick ended up being around 4-5cm under legal limit. Told my mate to give it a kiss before we let it go back but he refused haha.

The second bite went by quick, felt 2 huge tugs then nothing, I pretty much figured it took the bait because I put it on pretty poorly because of low light and no torch. At this point we were quite excited to actually have had some action because the last 4 years only went fishing 5 times for around 2-3 hours each time with no action. We both instantly fell in love with fishing from this point and aim to go fishing on a regular basis, can't let our fishing licence go to waste :biggrin2:

We plan to go fishing again tomorrow somewhere around Windang or in more into the lake hopefully getting luckier if weather permits, next time bringing a torch just in case.
