  1. Currently I wear shark skins long sleeve top & long pants with dive socks plus a raincoat if I still get cold but keeping dry will keep you a lot warmer.

If you can afford them Kokatat make some really good gear, particularly their pants with built in socks. These will be on my shopping list when I get away from study & back to full time work.

  2. Went to a squid seminar recently and they were advising 15lb braid and up to 40lb leader to reduce losses. Also said to strike hard at the slightest touch as they usually grab the middle of the jig while it is sinking.

  3. Got a pretty big shovelnose myself years ago just ouside the river in Cairns. Nearly as long as me and I'm 191cm. Unfortunmately in the pre digital camera era and I no longer own a scanner.

  4. How can the recreational zones be shared with commercial fishers? Wouldn't allowing any sort of commercial fishing autiomatically remove the title? You have to hope this is the press misquoting again but if not the buyout money has to be returned to the rec fishing fund with interest.

  5. Also spend lots of time yakking the bay. Find La Perouse, Brighton and the oil warf are the best launch spots. Not seen a shark yet and have done trips from La Perouse to Maroubra and back. If you do see one, just ignore it or, if it mae you nervous, calmly paddle to shallower water.

  6. Great effort. Definitely better than us. Managed 1 squid all day and one large tailor downrigging mid afternoon.

Massive schools of small striped fish running north of the bay made it difficult to identify anything else on the sounder.

  7. Don't take it up if you have pets that shed alot of fur. Recently started my first rod since getting married, but havng 3 cats in the house I just can't get a clean finish with all the fur floating around. Shame really as I used to enjoy it.

  8. If these people (and I use the term loosely) were willing to threaten someone with a knife over rubbish why would they care about a sign banning fishing?

Sounds like another pointless bureaucratic solution to me. A chance for a politician to achieve nothing but waving their own flag while others are still at risk.

  9. Quite possible those flatties were close to breeding with the water stsarting to warm up. Pretty sure the bigger fish are all females and most, if not all, small fish would be males hanging around waiting to fertilise eggs.

  10. Follow the above reccomendations and attach your gear (including rods) to the kayak via a leash of some sort.

Google will have plenty of ideas if you can't think of any.

Did 2 trips this week of 13 & 15kms with one dunking (my fault) but no lasting damage.
