  1. Thanks everyone for the replies!

Andy, I think I will just put the reels in my check-in luggage. I shouldn't have any troubles that way.

Pete, Yeah i'm going to take a rod travel tube. I will be dropping off a board bag at oversized luggage so the rod tube can go with those.

SydAngler, One $200 popper, or a months worth of Bintangs ... thats any easy choice lol! I think the $20 dollar Halcos will have to do. I have a couple a Strada's as well. They look pretty awesome! I think I will def get some big soft plastics though!

Tom, where can I buy Jerkshads on the Northern Beaches or North Shore? Any specific colours? And fishing low tide sounds good cause then it won't cut into my surfing time!

Andy351, thats what I thought about the line on reels. It does seem ridiculous! I wonder if anyone has ever used braided fishing line to create havok on a plane lol?

    Burnsy74, are Jershads stickbaits?

Thanks again guys for the advice. Its making me even more keen to get there and get amongst the fish! I've been watching Swordfisherman's Bali GT videos on YouTube - pretty inspiring.

And I will def let you know how I go over there.

    Ben

  2. Hi Raiders,

In a couple of weeks I am heading over to Indonesia. It will mostly be a surfing trip, however, I am really excited

to take some fishing gear this time. I will be throwing some poppers from the reefs and beaches in East Java to (hopefully) catch a GT!

I just wanted to know if anyone had some tips for this kind of fishing and what poppers will give me the best chance of catching a fish?

I have a few Halco Roosta poppers in the 135 and 195 size in different colours. Also what are the best tides/times to target GTs?

Lastly, I will be flying Garuda, does anyone know if I can take fishing reels on the plane in my carry on luggage?

I have been to Indonesia many times and have never fished over there (which feels like a waste of opportunities), so I am very excited to get over

    there and do some fishing!!

    Thanks Raiders.

    Regards,

    Ben

  3. Somehow I missed all these post.

Well it's been booked I'm staying at 2 resorts on Malolo Island Fiji. http://goo.gl/maps/0dng

Unfortunately it seems some places don't allow beach fishing but I'll suss it out when I'm there.

    Burnsy74:

Yeh I looked into that Jacque Cousteau resort....it didn't quite fit the bill with the lady. The fishing sounds great.

    B Man:

Last time i took an ugly stick travel rod 4-6kg, a crappy shimano FX 4000 spooled with 6kg mono. Lure wise I took soft plastics. I took about a dozen and went through them all from bust offs.

Now I'm older and wiser this is my set up:

    Rod

6-8kg Shimano Raider 7 foot travel rod

    Reel

My new Okuma Trio 40s spooked with 15lb power pro ( I bought these 2 items online for sub $100 - stoked). I'll also take my cheap Okuma Vectra as well, for use in the kayak.

    Lures

    Small Halco rooster popper.

    Rapala subwalk

    Selection of Halco twisties

    a couple of TT blades

A a couple of packs of prerigged SPs

Thanks for that Kooks. Thats pretty much the gear that I had in mind.

I have stayed at Malolo at Liku-Liku. Its the most amazing resort i've seen.

Im sure you will have a great time if thats where you are going. I didn't fish, but had a lot of fun!

  4. I have posted 2 similar post as I thought I didn't press the submit button at work...how do I delete a post?

    Hi Radiers,

I need some help. I'm planing a holiday somewhere in south pacific islands (Fiji, Samoa, tonga etc) with my girlfriend and want some advice on destinations. What I want to do is landbased fishing for small GT's queenfish etc. or the beach/rocks but the catch is it needs to be right where a 4-5 star resort will be.

Last time i went I stayed at the Intercontinental Golf resort in Fiji...This place was great as it had access to deep water via a large natural harbour. See image. This gave me access to Trevally, mackerel and other assorted fish that I never got close enough to sight before they bust me off.

I will prob go out on a boat once or twice but I do enjoy a bit of prospecting with lures in the morning before breakfast.

So anyone know of destinations that is close to what I want?

    cheers

Kooks, what gear (rod, reels, line, lures etc) did you use last time you were in Fiji?

I will be doing a similar thing in Indonesia later this year - throwing poppers, lures, etc from the reef on low tide hoping to catch, well, anything!

But probably just small GT's and the like.

    Thanks

  5. Hi Raiders,

Just wondering if anyone has used the Shimano Raider Travel fishing rods?

I will be doing a bit of traveling later this year, and of course some fishing while I'm away!

    All comments are appreciated...

  6. If keeping Squid to use as bait for future fishing sessions, what is the best way to clean it up?

Should they go in the freezer as they are?

Or is it ok to rinse them in freshwater before freezing them?

  7. Hi Tom,

I was down at Balmoral wharf on Tuesday morning and caught a legal King. I caught it on a Yakka that was about 20 cm long! Yakkas were easy to come by early on and it wasn't too busy. Only three of us there.

    Good luck

    Ben

  8. Hi Raiders, after reading, reading and more reading, I finally caught my first Kingy this morning! 65 cm on a live yakka. Such an awesome feeling to see line screaming off the reel. It was fun keeping it away from the pylons. Geez they go hard when they see the wharf!

A quick photo, then got another yakka out there. And straight on to a 70 cm salmon. I must have thrown the yakka straight down his throat!

Headed home after that on a high! Can't wait to do it again.

  9. Hi BlueAchilles,

    Looks very tasty!

I am heading up to Byron Bay for a week of camping in November and hope to do a bit of fishing.

Could you please let me know where you fished, and what bait you used.

I have never fished up that way!

    Thanks,

    Ben

  10. I recently just bought a landbased kingy combo for around sydney. I have the shimano baitrunner d 12000 (i can use this offshore as well for the bigger fish) with 30lb braid for the rats and an additional spool of 60lb braid for the bigger fish. I have a 10ft wilsons fishing rod.

Could you please pm where from and how much u spent. Thanks

  11. I was fishing a couple of months ago and pulled in a 30cm Bream first cast. He went in my bucket. Over the next 2 hours I caught a few more Bream, but all undersized. On my last cast I heard a bit of commotion around my bucket (it was about 20 metres away). I turned around to see a water rat running off with my Bream in it's mouth!! So after weeks of no luck, I went home with an empty bucket again.

  12. Hi raiders,

Im new to the site, and was just wondering if i could get some pointers...

I want to catch Kingfish this Summer/Autumn and so I need a new set up. I want to spend around 300 bucks.

I will be fishing mostly landbased from wharfs using live baits such as yakkas.

I have always used Shimano spinning reels for estuary fishing, so would prefer to stick with them for a kingfish setup.

Can anyone recommend which reel I should go for and a rod to match. Also what line to get? Braid?

Thanks ... any tips are greatly appreciated as there is a huge range of rods and reels out there and its all pretty confusing!
