Hi Guys,

Just double-checked and Botany Bay IS definitely a rec fishing haven and commercial Mullet hauling is positively not allowed. If this is happenning it is illegal.

It is legal, some commercial fishermen are allowed to catch BAIT from the bay,

it can be mullet, squid etc.

I did call fisheries and the inspector did comfirm it with me.

Actually I got carried away a bit, I should not have called them scum.

I guess they are just trying to maximise their income.

But I do blame the fisheries for allowing them to have this situation.

They are very efficient as I have hardly seen any mullet in the past few years.

[Getting Smell Of Your Hands]

personally I have a cloth tied to a bit of rope, each time i cut bait etc. it throw the cloth over into the

saltwater, wash my hands with it. takes seconds, then have a quick rinse of the hands (just cleaned)

in a bucket of fresh water to rinse the salt off them.

so easy.

however if you cant be bothered doing that, just dip your hands in a bucket of fresh moist chicken

manure at the end of the day, that will certainly override and fishy smells.

hi

go to the corner of where monlineux breakwater meets the beach.

there is a small reef there with plenty of kelp and seaweed over it.

anchor up and berley , usually there are hundreds of yellowtail there.

live yellowtail are great for kingies.

I found the smaller the yellowtail the better.

I also suggest you go to a well stocked tackle shop and get yourself a good quality 4lb line as

well as some medium shanked light size 16 fly hooks.

these small light hooks are beyond unbelievable in getting you yakkas when they are finicky.

if your are new to botany bay, it is absolutely important that you find out that near bare island

there is a bombora which is dangerous and has claimed many boats.

so get a navigation chart and familiarise yourself with it.

botany bay is a great place to fish.

and it has got exceptionally great since the netters were closed off to it.

all we need now, is to restrict professionals from operating outside of it.

and to stop them getting all of the breeding bream each autumns when they go out of the bay and

near the rocks to breed.

fillet your striped tuna.

sparingly sprinke rock salt around the fillets.

leave in fridge for 4 days in a deep covered bowl.

then dust off as much salt as you can. cover with fresh water for 1 day.

change water, and have it covered for another day. to leach out the salt.

then allow it to drain.

the fish will taste fantastic as is.

Don't to get your cast net.

There are usually lots of prawns to be caught.

Even at the marina in cairns. I was getting quite a few prawns about 4 a cast, from that marina.

I suggest you buy one at least 10ft wide and with heavy leads.

Dont bother with the ultra expensive ones. As they are far too heavy for multiple casting.

At yorkeys knob, theres quite a few bream.

Best to speak to the local tackle shops.

PS, alot of the fishing charters are hit and miss, especially from port douglas,

Remember they charge southerners extra, so just say that you are from cairns,

I caught those bonito early morning, however I did hear reports of them being caught later

that afternoon

(but for a better bet, bonito are generally are best early morning,

they also respond very well to a constant stream of pilchard pieces)

did a troll for the first time in the new boat on Sunday.

Great day.

Found bonito on cape banks (northern head of botany bay), around the 1 kilo mark.

They were in close, to about 500 metres off the land.

Anchored out about 300 metres, berleyed and started to spin on 2 kilo line.

Very good action.

Use small metals (10 grams). but had the removed the trebbles and in place,

put on a single 1/0 long shank hook, with the barbs removed.

I had great hook up results, and when I wanted to release the fish i just gave some slack line

to the fish, next to the boat, and it released itself.

I recommend barbless single long shanked hook on a metal lure for releasing fish.

Life is getting expensive for many families.

A simple trip to the national park now costs quite a few dollars.

It all adds up.

Fishing is getting harder. The common people have less and less.

All these restrictions imposed on them from the selfish few have a real toll.

I am sure the common people pay council rates as well.

Yet they get little in return, as their budget recreation is snubbed.

Where is the decency and common sense.

thousands of tonnes of skipjack (stripies)

please has anyone got any information of which government clerk has allowed this.

this public employee must be made accountable.

I suggest we lobbly against this.

If anyone has any idea of progressing this, for instance finding out who to write to, and

to constantly question. please share it with us.

this type of fish slaughter can no longer continue.

[Pointing The Transducer High]

Hi Fishraiders

Has anyone experimented with pointing the transducer of a fishfinder higher,

for example 45 degrees up and to the side of the boat, so as to see any

fish way out to the side of the boat, it would be handy for trolling for kingfish at the

edge of a bombarah etc.

possibly something like hummingbirds side imaging sounders,

does anyone have any ideas on this.

i am considering buying the lowrance x125 for usage at places such as the

12 mile reef off sydney heads and at the peak off botany.

has any one got one of those, if so please I would like to know your opinion

of them.

i mainly want a good sounder to see kingfish and the shape of the bottom.

[Sydney Harbour Bream And Catfish]

went to double bay after my late afternoon shift.

started to fish on the warf at 2200 hrs.

simply threw in a large peeled prawn on a two hook rig ( 1/0 black magic hooks) on 6lb line (unweighted)

got 8 legal sized bream. ps it does take quite a few hours, and the bream bite extremely softly.

I also caught a few catfish about 2 to 3 kilos each. are they any good to eat, and do you have

to cut off the spines, etc etc. ???? ????

[Tekota 800 And Tld 25]

TLD 25 would handle nearly most tunas even the larger ones.......A tekota 800 will handle em up to about 25kg...anything above that getting spooled may become an issue.

I have seen some tunas take out 100 metres of line at extreme speeds and the level wind on the tekota 800 may become a problem if that happened

I was also thinking of getting a tekota 800, but not for gamefish such as marlin or tuna, but for deep

water fish on 10kg line. such as gemfish , blue eye etc etc, most likely at browns mountain.

the reason i am going for the tekota is the level wind.

The line i will be using is .40mm thick (I picked up a massive bulk spool of it)

(incidently the weights i will be using to get to the bottom on browns mountain will be sacrificial), they

will be homemade concrete balls, attached to the rig on 6lb line, so they will break off on retrieval)

so do you think that the tekota will be decent for my application, and what do you reckon the real

line capacity would be if your using .40mm thick monofilament.

[Botany Bay Wide Fad Produces A Few Dollies]

Sensible conservation is rqquired as you may all agree. There is a lot of hearsay that mentions that

dolphin fish, are extremely active fish, and unfortunately will bleed to death after being released.

I do feel that this could be highly true.

wouldnt it be more sensible to have a strict bag limit, rather than size restrictions for dolphin fish.

Otherwise howmany dolphin fish would be released to die soon after.

lets not be ignorant.

in south australia they have a well managed snapper fishery. charter boats there will not tolerate

catch and release , as they definitely know the death rates.

I have absolute sucess in these sitautions, by using a very small silver fly, on 8lb trace.

basically go to the area where the salmon are, and drift there or anchor, (its ok, as you will

realise that the salmon will swim away and constantly come back in the same area)

drift out your unweighted line, and the fly which is basically a few light strands of dull silver tinsel

(3 millimetres thick and 1.5 cm long on a size 12 fly hook),

the salmon will soon see it (20metres behind the boat), and you will have an instant hook up.

I spent a few months working in weipa,

I fished rocky point boat ramp every morning before work and every afternoon after work.

to be honest, i was hitting 30kg barra.

but not on lures.

large dead or live mullet did the trick.

I saw countless guys come over with lures for only average results.

However if I was to use lures, it would be very large rubber fish, say at least 15cm.

without the weighted jig head.

just cast it out and let it flop on the surface, with an erratic retrieve.

Good effort guys,

Its fantastic to have ##### on the beach.

Unless I am mistaken, I feel that salmon have made a comeback. Could it be because of the

closure of the the Eden cannary ????

Nevertheless lets protect this new fishery.

if any one has any info of any possible dangers to this new sport fishery, please inform all,

I read reports (uncofirmed) that a study is going to be made by new south wales fisheries, to determine

if the salmon are causing havoc with beach bait supplies.

All i know is that I smell a rat, I just hope that they dont try to rubbish our salmon, and give a licence

to some foriegn trawler to turn them into fertiliser.
