  1. Fate is on our side big-kev The next time you catch something worthwhile let me know. I will have to get out and do the same thing to keep the tradition strong. Happy catching mate
  2. Hi guys, Caught my first ever BARRA on saturday as the sun disappeared off rocks in Townsviile. What an adrenalin rush that was. I got some nice live herring and mullet out of Ross river and went to breakwater rocks. Put on a large mullet(18cm) and set the drag at almost free spool. After a while I noticed something happening on the end of my line so heaved the rod out of the rock crevaces and let the line go slack. It was then that OLD PINKEYE decided to swallow the bait. Line was peeling off at quite a rate and whilst tightening the drag I struck. Not much fighting as I reeled him in. As he got close to the rocks the tailwalking started. He was not happy. Got him to the edge and with the hook in the lip lifted him out onto a rock platform. I have a few Barra scars from slipping on the rocks and getting nicked by his gill rakers as he decided to jump around and spit the 3/0 hook. I am slowly coming down from a great afternoon fishing. It weighed around 5 kg and measured at 78cm. I am sure it will taste good seen as it was my first. It is also my biggest fish to date beating my old record of a 2.5kg Flathead. Had a few other lines out with strip baits on hooks of varying sizes. Not much happening elsewhere, not even on prawns. happy fishing guys
  3. Seen some big rays landed and the occasional small shark but never seen a big groper landed. I would love to have a go at it though with some big handlines. I also doubt very much if I could ever land a 50lb Groper never mind the resident 150lb Groper that supposedly lives under the jetty
  4. 300 metres of 50lb braid A whole mullet (20cm) on 8/0 circle hook Next time The locals were using 200lb handlines but not much happening
  5. Fished 2 days over the weekend. about 12 undersized grunter. Lost all my gear on something tooooooo big. 2 undersized barra and a cat fish. Very windy and rainy next time...............HMMMMMMM!!!
  6. Maybe security officers posted with AK47's. Not sure mate I don't know how to get on it anyway.
  7. There is a small walk-on jetty beside the long one. No-one is allowed on the long jetty-BUGGER!! If you had a boat then your options are better. It has been said that the last pylon is great for fishing. Fast reteiving lures and hold on. Big fingermark can drag your boat towards the pylon. There is also a restriction of about 5 meters. Cannot fish within 5 metres of jetty pylons. Going up Tomorrow night I hope to beat my all time record of 3kg this weekend...he!he!
  8. The problem is that when the resident groper is around................nothing else is. I would like to see it. I certainly do not want to be towed around the jetty. January there was a big croc around the jetty ...............scarey stuff I propose to put a big mullet slab onto an 8/0 circle hook and attach it to my 114lb line on a handline. I have seen big barra there and at night you cannot see much but can hear bait fish being slammed by Barra and Tarpon. Queenfish can get big around the jetty and they are good fun to catch and make a fair sashimi. I will post a report if I get lucky. 3 days in January this year and no results was frustrating. Hopiong things get better now. I am not sure of the water depth from the jetty. I am assuming that it is about 20ft deep. I have only loaded 30 meters of 11lb line onto the handline. I have good gloves and will hold on tight ooops!! typo 114lb line that is
  9. There are some big Barra up here that tail walk while trying to throw your hooks. The mackeral are starting to appear so floating out a live whiting or mullet will also be on the cards. I live in townsville and yes the fishing can be good. I am only landbased but those that have boats do very well indeed. Happy fishing mate
  10. There are some very powerful fish lurking under the jetty besides the 200kg resident groper. I think I am probably a little late but will be targeting fingermark. Need some good gear for the big GT's and queenies Locals start at 150lb................I have 114lb with 8/0 circle hook.
  11. Hi all Going up to Lucinda for some landbased fishing. Loaded up the handlines(114lb) for some bottom bashing off the jetty as well as a few rods for bait and luire fishing any suggestions?????????????
