  1. Awesome, thanks Mack Attack 79. I have herd they are an unreal bait hence why I want to master catching them. With trapping, how long do you typically leave the trap in? I obviously don't want to leave it for too long and have the Poddy's swim back out! Matt
  2. Hey guys, I'm pretty much down with most live bait including yakkas, slimies and squid but I have never attempted to obtain Poddy Mullet. I've got a grips on the trap an how set it but I really wanted to know the following: - are their NSW fisheries limits on Poddys and the trap size; - are there certain times of year which are better to catch them; - what's the best method for rigging them (I'll be targeting flatties, bream and Jew; - are they spread around or do the concentrate in certain areas; ( I normally fish the Hawkesbury and Sydney Harbour) - what is everyone's best catches on Poddy's. Thanks guys Matt
  3. Hey Luderick - angler I live near Kellyville, and Berowra Waters is my local. Really keen to try esturay blackfish in that area (particually Britannia Rock and the ferry rock wall)then if I have no success move further downstream. I have fished there for a long time but never taken the time out to see what weeds are growing around the area. That would be great if you could. Mattyg
  4. Thanks mate, Sounds like I will have to scope it out in my local area a few times before I can turn a reel. Would they hit cabbage all they way up an estuary? Plenty of beachy/rocky areas in the Hawkesbury so I'm sure I can find it somewhere. Mattyg
  5. Fishnatic, My local tackle shop, "Fish On" at Kings Park has them from time to time and I have also herd that Windsor Bait and Tackle also sells them. Im not sure where else you could get them besides getting them direct from the trawler operators at the Hawkesbury. I have caught plenty of fish on the California squid but I never use them whole I always cut them into strips as they look nothing like a Southern Calamari or Arrow squid (have no idea if the fish notice it). But I always try for fresh squid first and have the frozen as a back up only. Mattyg
  6. Breamie, I had great success a few months back at Barrenjoey, got 5 squid within minutes and had 2-3 squid chasing their hooked mate as well. Filled my bait tank pretty quick as they were bloody huge. Have not tried recently though. If you were to use frozen I would recommend snap frozen fresh Hawkesbury squid which you will pay through the nose for. Mattyg
  7. Hey Guys, I am going to target some black fish in the hawesbury (Berowra way)this winter and would like to know anyones tips for locating silky weed. Is it something that can only be done at low tide (off rock etc) or will I have to drag a large sinker through weed beds? Also is it more commonly found in rocky areas or mangrove type areas. Thanks in advance for your help Matt
  8. Howe, I have fished the east side of Berowra Water Ferry. If you are facing Hornsby there is a bush track that runs off to your right (I think it's part of the Great North Walk), head up there and you will find many spots to try. I have never caught anything of size fishing from there (only fished it 3 times about 5 years ago) but you can get Bream, Flathead and Whiting. Also try under the F3 bridge (both Sydney and Central Coast sides), there is some deep water so you have a chance of landing a decent fish. Be aware that the current rockets through there so you may need some heavy lead to keep you bait up near the pylons. Matt
  9. Hey Kingpig, The tide was right on the turn to run out. I landed the biggest at the early stages of the run out. The tidal effects up that stretch of the river were very small compared to the main river. Having never fished for Bass before I didnt have high expectations due to the very sunny day and high temp. However I think the baro pressure was between 1017 and 1020. I pulled all the bass out of heavily shaded areas and was casting the lure practically onto the bank. Most of the Bass hit the spinner bait almost immediately after one turn of the reel. Matt
  10. Hey Nursie, I was using 6lb braid with a 6lb leader on the spinner but was also using 4lb braid with 6lb leader on the hard bodies. I also managed to christen my brand new 2500 Stradic CI4 which the 36cm Bass took drag off. I was looking up Catti River just before and I'll definitely be giving it a go as I only live about 30 min or so from there. I would really like to land an EP next. Matt
  11. Hey guys, Spent the easter long weekend down at Lower Portland on the Hawkesbury River, skiing, camping and fishing. Having never fished for freshwater/brackish fish I was pretty keen to get some bass. I purchased a few lures which included shallow and deep divers, stick and spinner baits. A purple spinner bait did the damage every time. Given the amount of boat traffic it was almost impossible to fish any of the banks on the Hawkesbury so I headed up the Colo river for a couple of km's in search of some "bassy" looking areas. Managed to find a few great shady spots with lots of snags and I'd have to say that every Bass I caught put up a great fight big or small, I even had one wrap me around a snag and force me to play the waiting game (which I won). All up I caught five bass with the best going 36cm, I also had many follows up to the boat and plenty of taps under water. I was pleasently surprised as to how much enjoyment I had chasing them and got addicted to the suspense that builds when you initially get an inquisitive bump on the lure. I will cetaintly be chasing Bass in the Colo River again. Matt
  12. Hey Guys, Just wanted to know if anyone has fished for Kings in Pittwater this summer (if you can call it a summer). I have been out a few times trolling yakkas around the usual spots but have had not success. Matt
  13. First saw this on facebook via the Squidy fan page and everyone went to town on the fact that he kept it. In the end its the anglers decision and I would bet that the Jewie was in no state to be returned to the water.....
