we fished the area for zeros unfortunately. Found the right water just not the fish. Very messy early on but got better as the day wore we were very close where they got the 130 kg jobbie. Went from 21.2 around southern canyons but we found a spot at 19.6 with a floating, log canoe etc

I'm heading out of the Hacking on Sunday and heading south east. I figure if im prepared to push far enough S/E i will find the right water. Yes there is a chance east, wide of Browns but i believe the better odds still lie S/E and Im prepared to go along way if needs be then circle back N/E and follow the wind back in.

  3. Hi Raiders,

Some of the older members might remember my quest for my first Jewie. Well long story short still no Jewie but I thought I'd share this story with you anyway (apologies there's no happy end here).

The story actually begins weeks ago when I focus again on researching techniques, methods etc to enhance my chances when the time and tides are right. I decide tonight is the night to have another crack. So the other day I suggest a "walk along the beach" with the Mrs which she knows is of course code for gutter searching. So I swim out to the most fish holding looking gutters to assess their various depths. I decide on one in particular that drops away steeply from a shallow bank to around 7ft deep (and that was at low tide).

I decide that fresh squid is my best hope so I plan a session yesterday afternoon so it is still fresh for tonight's attempt. As we all know it was p###### down with rain yesterday and I get completely soaked. None the less I come away with only one squid but I bank on this one squid to get me that first Jew.

By now the Mrs thinks I've lost it and I've gone mad.

Off I go to the beach this evening. Half an hour before high tide, using some other squid I bought from the seafood shop, I hook a large Tailor or Salmon (not sure but it jumped out of the water and spat the hook). I decide it's time to put on the fresh squid that I worked my back side off for. It's dusk, just before high and looking promising. My fresh squid is out in this gutter for about 5 mins when out of no where, 3 absolute more-ons in rubber duckies come speeding past. They must have been doing 100kms p/hr and about 30metres off shore (just at about where my line enters the water) one gets threw, the second gets threw then of course the last one catches the line. my rod suddenly bends violently and snap goes the lot. Line, rig and most upsettingly my one best bait. I just want to say to those guys who did this " thanks a lot you absolute dick heads! ( admin please don't edit that out)

Weeks of preparation and planning gone in a second.

I give up and pack up. My mate said to me yesterday, " if it wasn't for bad luck I wouldn't have any luck" after tonight episode I'm beginning to think he is right.

    Nats

send me a PM i may be able to assist with your quest.

  4. Boys,

Favourite way to eat fish for me is sashimi and I am a bit of a nut/nazi over keeping it in primo condition. Favourites in order of preference are as follows:

    1. Lobster, albeit only had it twice
    2. Snapper (small ones are outstanding)
    3. YFT (haven't tried SBFT but heard it is better)
    4. Kingie
    5. Bonito
    6. Albacore
    7. Trevally
    8. Salmon
  5. Managed to get out on Thursday with a couple of Raiders, went early in the morning which not my usual MO. High sped trolled all the way to Browns, didn’t get anything doing that, but I didn’t expect to either. I just like running lures at 20 knots, it makes me happy :)

Slowed down and trolled at a normal trolling speed once when we reached Browns, heaps of boats out south of Browns but it didn’t sound like they were getting much at that time. So we started heading S/E of Browns looking for colder breaks, eventually got a double hook-up about 12 NM SE of Browns in 19.2, nice BFT.

We landed one in around 10-15 minutes on 24kg.

We got a couple of hook-ups and hits near Browns on the way back, but dropped them. The underwater camera revealed they were Albacore, good to know, now I can sleep at night. Heading back we heard lots of boats getting Albacore and some YFT in the afternoon, great to hear other boats got fish on-board as well, great day out.

Got the BFT on the smallest lure in the spread, 6” lure chain.

    Peter

    Hey Peter well done.

We started out at the canyons in the morning and trolled towards browns for doughnuts. Deep dropped on Browns for an hour but lucked out.

Found some fish on the tide change a few miles n/e of Browns in the afternoon in about 19.7c. Ended up with 4 albies and a YFT of about 25kg. All in all a very good day. Still yet to crack the BFT hoodoo though.

What i cant work out is why don't people share more info? As i was leaving about 3pm I got onto 21 and let everyone who wanted to know where we found our fish, just don't understand why people are so cagey. ps from what I've been told the best thing you can do is call up other boats when you find BFT, as the more baits in the water the more likely they are to hang around.

  6. Dear All

As promised went for a look yesterday. Got out to Browns yesterday by 7.30 am conditions were worse than forecast and it was quite choppy with wind of about 12-13 knots. Managed to get bottom albeit not straight up and down lost one lot of baits with no hookup. After that the only thing we hooked up was the bottom. All in all seemed pretty quiet out there and none of the other boats seemed to be getting much either.

Pulled stumps at 10.30am and set out our spread of mainly tuna lures and headed south, then east and then back towards Browns and over the shelf. Picked up 2 legal dollies and a nice stripey but other than that nada, The Peak was pretty quiet as well.

    Johno out

  7. Hi guys went out for a troll last Saturday out of Port Hacking. Headed out at day break to see heaps of birds and bait in around 50 metres so put out the spread.

Trolled south east to around 140 metres where we didn't see to many signs of life. We decided to head north and not long after caught a stripe tuna of a couple of kilos. We then came across more birds and heaps of bait jumping out of the water. We followed the school for what must have been close to 2 hours, they were heading north at about trolling speed. I raised the question if we should move on but my mate wisely said to to persist as it looked very fishy.

I was on the wheel when I noticed a small buch of birds had broken away about 200 metres from us so headed that way for a look. As we approached the left outrigger went off on a screaming run and luckily I had picked the left side if the boat as my rods.

I got on the rod while Blake packed up all the gear then got me in the harness, around then I saw the beast launch about 200 metres behind the boat and that was the last time we saw him.

For the next forty minutes I was in good battle with plenty of long runs and also some long stalemates. We finally saw colour and Blake called it for a Black marlin but I was sure I saw a touch of green. A few more winds and our dreams came true a monster Dollie and that's when the nerves really kicked in. Lucky he was pretty tired and was gaffed and on board in no time. Plenty of hoots and high fives ( maybe a hug or two as well). He weighed 20.8 kilos and I have decided to get it mounted. Awesome day and shows persistence pays.

I have heaps of pictures if someone can tell me how to put them up.

    Hey mate fantastic fish.

Boys the big ones are still out there. We lost one at the boat after about 30-40 mins on 24kg, N/E of the hacking fad. Ours still had a bit of go even at the end and went under the boat and the rest is history. Lesson for the inexperienced - if you are clipped into the reel via the harness unclip when you get it near the boat that way you can put the rod in the drink if the fish takes a last minute dive under the boat. Upon reflection however all I wanted was a photo as we got 2 of around 1.2m last week so im sorta glad we had the quick release.

Mike may want to add his version of events.

  8. Boys was out yesterday. Stopped at Browns first thing and bagged out very quickly on Gemmies. Heard later that the makos switched on and most boats seemed to be getting sharked. Headed N/E at about 8.30am found some sauries a couple of miles from Browns but no joy kept heading N/E and found some patches of bait near Heatons. Started trolling S/W towards Sthn Canyons heard of one yellowfin dropped and thats about it. Very quiet yesterday albeit some of the bigger boats cubed on dusk and may have had some activity.

  11. We were out north of heatons in 500 Fa on Thursday.

Heard marine rescue talking to some sailboat that said the wind was going to blow up in the late afternoon. The thing is when we checked the forcast in the morning on willy and seabreeze the forcast was for 15-20Konts which is quite fishable in our boat.

To cut a long story short it was very quite with only one yellow fin caught near us and a very wet and rough ride home.

One of the crew has damaged his ribs and five of us were pretty sore wet and sorry when we got back to pittwater .

Mate what boat were you in? We were near the yin caught late in the arvo near browns we you nearby also?

  12. Very right mate

    No fish worth your life

Might of been a slow day but you still got around to some fish

Fish on the troll or cubing

6784 unfortunately my original post was not clear. Yin caught but not by us goddammit. I think they were both caught on the troll. Would have been very uncomfortable cubing yesterday arvo.

  13. Boys

Was out on Everwilling yesterday and got almost to Heatons. No SBT. 2 yellowfin were caught and that was it. Not much activity and even in the 56ft Viking we had a pretty slow and rough trip back.

I have a 25 foot Boston and for those of you that havent ventured wide be careful, go with other boats and be very conservative. Even in a 20 knot westerly it will take you a very long time to get home and no fish is worth your life and your crews. I have on occasion seen some 15 foot boats out there and just shake my head. If the weather turns to custard (and sooner lor later you will get caught out) you are in dangerous territory.

  14. Boys

We went S/E and found a good temp break in 18.4 about 38nm out. Trolled it then cubed for donuts. There was plenty of bait in the general area also.

Tough day at the office but thats fishing.

Nick, I heard you on the radio a few times. You probably noticed i was trying to raise honu all day but couldnt speak to him. Albeit i could speak to a friend near browns. Bit frustrating

  15. Boys,

There is cold water out there but it is very wide at the moment. By my calculations about 160km out. I reckon it will push in over the next week or so. Fingers crossed. Getting the boat serviced in anticipation.

    Gidday Mark how goes it?
