  1. Recently started going for the Luderick down here in Ulladulla... We have a some great spots for bait(Dolphin Point) and good spots for Luderick (Lighthouse, harbour). I've been down the harbour trying for them and had some success, researched a bit on google and went for it. My first hitout got me some good hits and a near hookup, turns out I was using a hook that was just too big. Switched to a No. 10 fly hook on the end of some 4lb flurocarbon and bingo what a fight... First landed was a on the nose legal 27cm... took home, pan fried in butter... lovely. I've found that you need to experiment with depth from 1/2 a mtr to 2 mtrs... depending on the day and the tide you just have to try different depths till you find them. I use a long rod (12ft) that is really a light beach rod and not quite wippy enough but it is what I have. Being this close to Christmas and having 5 kids I have NO fishing budget... lol. All the same I'm having a ball with this kind of targeted fishing and have just picked up some no. 10 square green hooks... green! Right now I trying to figure out how to convince the wife to let me out and abandon her with five kids right on dinner time so I can try my luck with the new hook.. dont like my chances.. only need half an hour (1hr). Tis a bit windy tho.. But then.. I'd fish in a cyclone.. wish me luck!
  2. Yep... just inside the harbour...
  3. Spent the last few days fishing the Harbor in Ulladulla, Wednesday was really slow and after two full drizzly hours of absolutely nothing my rod doubled over, a short intense battle ensued producing a good sized (44cm)silver trevally (pictured),taken on a prawn, that went down a treat as dinner. Friday saw small bream and a giant ray. Saturday saw a real mixed bag, another smaller trevally by a fellow angler, good legal whiting (mine), a Luderick (blackfisherman), a legal Tailor(mine) and a barrage of tinny bream to keep the kiddies interested. A great day had by all and it was great to see so many dads out with their kids wetting a line and showing them the joys of fishing. Anyway may you all be blessed with bent rods and straightened hooks. Jas BTW... A little known secret... The Burril Lake ski club's boat ramp has now been opened to the public due to a funding deal. Shhhhhhh...... most of the locals still don't know...
  4. Took my four year old fishing this morning down Mollymook Beach, he is not all that well at the moment so I thought I'd help him forget his woes. Caught the tide just at the outgoing. Wasn't long before our lines were being hit. My sons rod got a big whack and I told him to start reeling. He stood at the base of the rod with it still in its pvc holder winding like mad, after a bit he really started to struggle and gave me a look of "HELP!". His rod was going from slack to bent so I grabbed his hand over the reel and helped hi reel it in. As it got closer I had to take over much to the relief of my son, pulled the rod out and finished landing it. I picked up the Salmon to show him his great catch and he backed up real fast, he was a bit daunted by its size... I guess it was about 40-45cm. Didn't have the camera with us but here is one just after we got home with it minus its head. Anyway he loved the experience and ran into the house screaming "MOM I CAUGHT A BIG FISH!!!!". It was his first ever fish... not bad. I've had reports of big tailor being caught from the surrounding beaches.. going out again by myself this afternoon to give them a nudge.
  5. Yeah.... probably right... lol
  6. First flat floor is in! I'm not sure how it would handle a swell, I've been told it has a good hull for it but I'd like to test it in some boat wash - christmas on Conjola lol. I'd love to take it out to Jervis but I need a bit more safety gear depending on how far out I'd need to go, and yes only on a perfect day. I've got all the nav lights and some leds for under the gunners for rigging and whatever so I am definitely looking forward to some all-nighters on the lake come summer.
  7. Yes I agree, I was going to have a small casting deck up front but given the size of the boat, a flat floor will do. The middle seat will stay, but I am considering cutting into it and making an esky/baitwell thing. perhaps some flat tackle box storage underneath either side of the esky. I am hoping to put in a rod box down one side as I have two of five kids with disabilities and 'out of sight out of mind' till we start fishing if you know what I mean. In any case I've taken it out a few times... got the first floor roughed in... and its fine to fish from. Floor is made from two ply sections screwed into 3 pine joists resting on the center bracings. I've used 3 rubber door stops on each side edge instead of having the pine resting directly on the hull. I'll get some carpet to neaten it up. I have a wide Eye 128 fishfinder without the side transducers ready to go in. Its a great hull shap, boat stays very dry even in windy, choppy conditions. Taking it to Lake Conjola nest trip as Birril is a bit quiet. I'll have the fishfinder in by then so that will help... Thanks for the input.
  8. Here are some pics of the old girl... You can see the transom work done and the problem. Was considering replacing the entire transom with marine play but I'm a bit worried about the extra weight. My casting deck wound go from about 4 inches behind the front bench to the start of the forward storage area at seat level, enough room to stand and stumble a bit... the aft will also be covered housing the battery, bilge pump, float switch and some other gear with enough room to stand and cast from. Fuel in the forward area? I was thinking of putting heaps of distance between it and the electrics. I might put a little shelf in forward storage bay for a flat tackle box or two. The center would be a standard floor from marine ply and carpet. The transom bracket is getting welded next week. Any thoughts on my ideas? or any ideas for my thoughts? would love some feed back. Thanks... Jas
  9. Hi everyone, just bought a 12' tinny, pushed by a 15 merc on the tiller. Been out a couple of times in her but now stripped ready for fitout. Because of the type of boat (doggett)I only intend on doing the lakes down here. If anyone has any suggestions as to materials/design I would love to hear them. Motor is in for a service and the boat to the shop for a transom bracket repair. I'd like a casting deck up front, storage somewhere, a live bait well would be good, battery bay, and room for an esky. am I asking to much of this 12 footer ? I'll post some pics of the old boat soon. A bit of extra weight doesn't worry me. (its not how fast you get there, just get there) I would like to avoid cutting into the bench seats as that's all my floatation. I look forward to any feedback you guys in the know can give... I do have a transom issue. It has been converted from a short leg transom to a long leg, and the transom is now at a 20 degree angle instead of the standard 12. The shop said that to replace the transom with 5mm plate and bulked out for the mount in shop could cost up $700. I told the minister of war and finance (wife) and then we had the yelling/glaring/muttering thing. Any advise?
  10. Oh how embarrassing... Thanks, I'll check it out.. lol
