  1. I have so many of these moments its not even funny. I have caught plenty of port jacksons and they fight exactly like you described. Basically end up just dragging the poor things along the bottom.
  2. G'day Raiders. Headed out to Little Bay at 3.30 today to try some wash fishing for drummer. Armed with some tips I have picked up on this forum, I attempted not to lose half my gear to the ocean as per every other trip. Cut up some cunje, and let it dry in the sun as I threw around some lightly weighted pieces of bread in the wash. Took me half an hour to get my drifts right and soon after that I started to get some action. My bread was getting destroyed. As soon as it got under the surface it would get ripped off the hook. (If anyone has any suggestions how to properly bait it that would be awesome if you could share) Tried a few smaller pieces and bigger pieces and finally got a hookup. Thought it was a bream at first but brought up a silver sweep? Ok... well at least that's not a rock cale or wrasse, i'm cheering Back in he went. Not even sure if I could eat the fella. By now, the cunje had dried out so I put some on and cast in. I could feel the little buggers going at it and it struggled to get to the bottom with all the rubbish nibbling at it. Put a bigger piece of bait on to get it to sink quicker and then tap tap tap BANG. I got smoked before I even reached for my drag. Had to leave about 5 pm because I ran out of sinkers Still had the fishing bug so I bought some gear then headed to Lurline for some more Only lost 2 rigs this time, a 1/4 of the amount lost at little bay, and I caught more fish. Ended up being 4 altogether. 2 on cunje, 2 on bread and all sent back to harass another angler. Probably come back to haunt me So that's how it ended up. No drummer and a clean sweep. Note; this will be awkward if they are not actually silver sweeps like I thought...
  3. Tragedy. There are too many of these news reports coming in. And with summer around the corner, that only means more anglers on the rocks.
  4. Awesome catch on metals Still trying to land my first fish on Halco's
  5. I might try that syd angler. I find that cubes is the best way to ensure pilchard stays on the hook as well. And they are big enough to fish unweighted. I'll give this a go soon and report back in.
  6. Do you get sheet metal from a place such as bunnings? Or would I need to source it from a specialist? I like the idea of crimping it onto the bottom of a pater rig. As you said, it should just slide of if it gets snagged.
  7. G'day raiders, I was hoping some of you could help me with some tips on fishing the wash. I target a few spots between La Perouse and Bondi depending on the conditions. This means I could be fishing at sea level, or up to 10 m high. A few things about my techniques. I like to fish light (8 lb platypus mono), my rig is a pea sized sinker (2 depending on conditions) running straight to a small hook attached to my main line. I target the washy areas close to the rocks and usually try to let my bait drift from the furthest cast I can produce to as close to the rocks as I can get it without snagging. I use a variety of bait including cut up pilchards, cunje, bread and peeled prawns, all of which have caught fish for me. I don't burley all the time, but of course find the fishing better when I do. Now, a couple of problems I have encountered: 1. I lose A LOT of gear. I use a 12 ft rod to try and get out over the snags but alas I still hit the nasty areas. I know that this is the nature of this type of fishing, but seriously, my local fishing shop looks at me weird every time I enter now. I thought these snags would be solved by fishing light gear, and it does help, but I still find myself losing up to 10 hooks/ sinkers for 1-2 fish. When I find myself snagged, I just break it straight away because I find I can re rig very quickly using a basic setup. 2. Fishing light it is often hard to get the cast distance for my drifts, so I try to choose a spot with the wind at my back. Should I be looking to get bigger casts to maximise the time the bait is in the water. Or just cast more often? 3. I get big bow lines from the wind and i'm not sure if it's pulling my line into the rocks, but it makes it hard to feel bites. 4. I am trying to target drummer and bream but there are LOTS of rubbish fish down there. I know this is again the nature of this type of fishing, but what can I do to find my target species? Thanks in advance. Maybe you guys can help a young fisho break the cycle of constantly coming home with no fish
  8. That's beautiful. I wouldn't worry about how slow i'm going if i'm cruising in that thing
  9. Maybe that will help me catch more pigs. I can just imagine those chicken kievs floating around in the wash.
  10. Next time I might chuck out a whole rump
  11. I might clamber down there the next few days to take a look. I only live in Randwick.
  12. I just bought like 5 Halco lures Looks like a nasty spot. I guess a no no for Southerly swells?
  13. Sounds like a bit of overkill. Not sure of the reasoning behind 'bait free' areas. If anyone could enlighten me it would be great. I mean sure it might be effective in cases of serious recreational overfishing. But I don't understand the protected shark habitat thing.
  14. Thanks for clearing that up. What a bummer!!!! Might have to invest in a few more chrome slugs. Any recommendations for high up cliff faces in the area?
  15. Either way mate, there is plenty of support for you here. It looks awesome and i'm actually keen to have a read hahaha Good luck for HSC We should go put some of those tips into action when you're all done
  16. Went for a walk today around South Maroubra looking some spots I have read about... Little greeny, Greeny, The Blessings, and the furthest point on the Maroubra/ Malabar headland. It was a good trek in the sun, but I found most of these would be very dangerous in any sort of swell. A few plaques there serve as a constant reminder of the dangers we sometimes put ourselves in. A lot of the safer cliffs have long drops too, so it would be a hard haul up the face. One spot I couldn't find was the blessings. Just wanted to know where it is along this headland. south maroubra.bmp I have read that it is about a 10m drop. protected from any s-s/e swell, and that there is lots of rubbish there now Couldn't find any spot matching the description, or an angel ring marking it's location. The red line is the path I took, and the yellow line is the general area where I think the spot is. If anyone could mark it, or send me a pm it would be greatly appreciated.
  17. God I wish I could catch those blackies in these numbers and quality. Good work.
  18. Top job. Would've taken a lot of time and effort.
  19. Do you skin it before you fillet a drummer? I caught one at Lurline the other day, after a number of bustoff's I was so stoked to catch something. Went to fillet it straight away and basically hacked the thing into bits Got a sharper knife now, but is it easier to prepare with skin off first?
  20. What's your go to bait when the fish aren't on the bite? 3 gang hooks on a paternoster rig seems to hold the steak well..
  21. Swept down the rocks at Shark Point Clovelly. 1 hour fishing on a run down tide and a rogue hits me from no where. Safe fishing everyone. The risks are real.
  22. I only fish the baths when squidding at night. Other than that I go just off the point hoping to land that big salmon
