  1. I think that at this rate of waiting ... I will be able to afford a second hand Stella come summer =)

I wonder if Ross and Glenn run the Saragosa's on Broady and Billfisher

  2. thanks for the replies

scotty, yeah figured that's why they were blowing them up on a regular basis

but there are also people out there with the 5000/6000 sizes melting drags with 15-20kg jews

still have really mixed feelings about the reel ...

  3. It's almost been a year since these reels were released ... I have been searching all over google for a review but can't seem to get anything solid.

There have been comments made here and there but a good solid write up from someone whom has put the reel through its paces is nowhere to be seen.

I have been on popping websites that have shown horrific pictures of the 18000's with snapped reel legs and stories of under-performing drags and even side-plates falling off after a few weeks. To be fair this is coming from blokes who flog these reels at 40+ kilos of angry GT's ... and the list of casualties include the Z6000GT saltigas aswell.

There have been numerous threads and posts by raiders already recommending it, but still no real review of the reel ... and it seems a fair few own the reel aswell.

So what I am asking those whom have and still own a Saragosa, is that ...

How long have you had it for and how often does it get used?

What type of work has your reel seen? jigging/popping/livebaiting etc.

    Has the drag held up?

    Any line lay problems?

    Cosmetic problems?

    Any other problems?

    Are you happy with it?

I am looking to get one for a pure popping setup, probably twice a week on some 15-25kg GTs running 80lb braid ... the Saragosa will most probably be able to handle it no worries ... but i'm just looking for an excuse to hold out and wait for a stella instead ... then again once or twice a week doesn't really warrant getting a stella either.

    appreciate any replies

    Ray

  4. I have 3 models in the 10-15kg range, 6', 6'6", 7'. All running 12000FA Spheros'

The 6' rod has landed a 6ft reef shark on 50lb braid, can't fault them. The 6' rod was also used for tossing poppers off the rocks for GT's, been connected a few times but never landed due to straightened hooks =(

  5. Cheers Mate - sounds like a very good option and for a very good price....erm any suggestions where I could pick one up from in the Northern Beaches area?

Just to save starting another thread ...

does anyone know of any shops around sydney that sell suction cap transducer mounts?

looking to get one for a Garmin FF140

    cheers

  6. Hi.

Just wondering if any raiders out there have been fishing in Vanuatu? Can anyone give me advice on the fishing there?

I am staying on Espiritu Santo, and Efante islands....

Anyone recommend any charters or anything to do in the way of fishing?

    Much obliged.

    Chewy

Chewy not sure if this is too late, but for Santo I know of 2 charters available.

    - Bokisa Resort operates their own charters, so if your already booked in to accomodation with them then you just have to organise it with them. http://www.bokissa.vu/

    - If your going to be staying in town then you can give Santo Island Dive & Fishing a call (I will get you their brochures for contact details) they are on the main road.

Sorry I can only advise on Santo charters :( as I live here and can't really comment on the Port Vila charters, although it seems Nautilus might be the go.

Iam in Santo until the 17th of Jan so if your here around then drop me a PM

good luck with your Vila charters

    ray.

  7. I didn't even realise the bands were that visible in the photo, couldn't really see them in the flesh as it was refrigerated overnight.

Guess its settled then wahoo it is ... taken on a home made skirt made out of rice bag strips, red/white

    Better pic

  8. Hey raiders,

Just a fish my mate (operates a resteraunt) had brought in the other night by some locals. We couldn't identify but the locals called it a king fish =\ ... now its not the usual yellowtail you get in aus/nz but are there aother species of kingies that may look like this in the pacific?

    Cheers

  9. wirlez, Weather was crap the first couple of days but improved as the week went on. Where abouts aree you at Santo are you and what is the fishing like up that way

Im in Luganville on Santo (I live here :1prop: ) last week was crappy weather for us too but Wednesday showed signs of improvment and it was enough for me to head out with my brother and cousin just for a Reef bashing session.

Only managed a Coral trout around 4kgs mark + a handfull of other reef species sweet lips, red throats, cods etc. also got smoked a few times by some bigger fish, didn't even get to see what the monsters were :( But we did managed to pull up a Leatherjacket of some sort ... took a pic of it and returned it.

We only had a half day trip planned so stuck in close, nonetheless a good half a day spent on the water and not at work

We also saw a pair of whales 30 meters from where we were which was a pleasant sight, but I think that ended our run with the fish

The weather turned sour around noon anyway wind came up and it started to rain, so no big loss

The photo shows the leathery and my cousin. You can see the weather we had that day.

    fisgvr5.th.jpg

But ... besides from that day of decent weather we have been getting hit everyday with 15-20knot southerlys  . So I haven't heard of any of the bigger boats going out and getting anything, which makes me jealous of the fish you got put onto by the crew of "In Deep"

Should be getting my Spheros back from Tony at Fishfinders by Friday this week, hopefully weather plays nice and I might be headed out with a mate (on his "bigger" boat) to go for a jig

NB: sorry for the long post

  10. I have just returned from Vanuatu where a mate and me had 2 days out aboard "In Deep" a 28 foot game fisher. Over the 2 days we cought 3 Yellow Fin in the 40kg range, about 20 Mahi Mahi to 15kg, a good wahoo and a dog tooth tuna. Also we dropped 2 Marlin. The skipper/Owner is a local fella and was awsome, on day 1 we cought more fish than all the other charter boats combined. All the pics are on my mates camera so i will add them when he dose me a CD.

Sounds like you did well mate. How was the weather down that way?

    Looking forward to some photos

  11. Be very interested to see the pics... and how much the charter costs and a bit of a review . Are you going out on two x day trips or heading out for two days..Saqa's got me berleyed up and dreaming of a week in Figi...................mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.......................?????????maybe two weeks...

Anyway thats all a bit selfish i hope it goes absolutely ballistic for you and ya mate..

Here is last weeks report from the paper, looks decent for what horrid weather we are getting :)

  12. Back in January the girlfriend and me went on holiday to Vanuatu. To cut a long story short, there was a mix up with our accommadation. As compensation the resort gave us a free week. Any way we are flying out on Sunday arvo, taking my best mate and his wife with us. My mate and I have sole chartered a game charter boat for 2 days and to say Im excited is a massive under statment. Last time I was there i got a charter out and cought a marlin and a wahoo and that was ment to be low season. Anyway Ive packed the digi camera so hopefully will be posting some monster fish in a week or so.

Mate any ideas on which islands your charter is visiting? could be a chance we could meet up for a few drinks :beersmile::thumbup:

Heres a few pics of the good weather I enjoyed on Tuesday

    lagoontues002gi3.th.jpg lagoontues004sv5.th.jpg

Has been overcast the past 2 days so just a heads up the weather at the moment is a bit windy/choppy (best to pack for some wet weather) ... but I hope the weather clears up in time for your trip mate.

    Have a good one :yahoo:

  13. Just one more question whats the different between the TLD 50 LRS 2 Speed and the TLD 50? Campbells has them at the same price whilst gotyatackle.com has them priced differently?

From what I can see (TLD Specs) the LRS just has a higher max drag, for use with heavier lines

  14. Sammy and Jonno,

If you pick this up, I'll bring our new jig blank out that we build in house on the day out.

    Very interesting weapon this one!!

    Ray saw it today. ;)

Blew my mind o.O .... That thing is a weapon indeed!!

I ended up walking out with a Silstar Crystal Blue Jig Stick :1prop: ... my piggy bank would only allow so much

Tony some day we will put my name to one of them !!

  15. Hi my names Rayman (Ray)

I'm 19 years old, I was born in Sydney, but grew up in Vanuatu. Never really did much fishing there as we didn't have a boat :mad3: ... but everyone has to start somewhere! I started fishing around about Feburary of this year, out of a 3.1m Zodiac. I guess my PB so far out of this boat would be a 2.4kg Mangrove Jack or a 3.5kg Red Throat (mostly reef fish over there).

Have since been on a mates boat to go offshore to the FAD for dollies and trolling around for tuna/wahoo ... loving it! :yahoo:

Anyway Iam currently living in Roselands area of Sydney for the duration of my studies, but I took this year off studying International Tourism Management at Manly, so I will be flying back on the 25th of sept to spend christmas/new years with family, returning to syd in january.

Then I guess next year I will be spending most of my time landbased trying out plastics

Came across this site, when we got rained in on a fishing trip ... couldn't have spent the time indoors better

  16. For those depths you definately need a dual transducer :biggrin2: for sure

    Cheers Stewy

What the manufacturers state as the max depth they read definately depends on what type of water you are sounding ,much better readings in the fresh than the salt .

Ahh K thnx Stewy ... guess that settles it then, DF it is!

    Hi Mate

I am looking for a new sounder as well. My reseach has lead me to a Eagle Seacharter 502c DF IGPS. This is a bit more expensive at $450 US but it has a duel frequency transducer 50/200 Hz. 500W RMS and 4000W RMS peak to peak and is 256 colour.

Eagle and Lowrance are made by the same company and the user function are very similar.

    Good Luck

    Kingpig

Mate, thats what I had looked at as well, but I don't think I would be all that fussed about colour (I may regret this later :mad3: ) ... besides from that I think the SeaCharter 480DF has the exact same range/features.

Can I also ask where you maybe planning to order yours from?\

    Cheers

Edit: also ... anyone have an Idea on how long it takes to get shipped through express courier/airmail?
