I only fish a couple spots west of the bridge. I use a very basic rig with a number 1 ball sinker, 12lb 1 meter leader and and a 3/0 light gauge hook with strip baits

After recent success with some nice reds lately whilst chasing Jews I thought we would to and target reds again this morning. This time we got Jews as a by catch. Landed 3 all small between 55 and 65cm. All on squid. Also got a couple bream right on 40cm. Once again not what we were targeting but happy anyway.

Gary0 I fish in really deep water with big squid baits. I find that bream prefer other baits and shallower water.
-
Yes squid as bait. I have tryed sp's only for flatheads at the same location. I think I am using the wrong sp's
-
Only the odd thumper (over 40cm) I am not targeting them though

I have fished the harbour for over 30 years and this is the first time that I have caught quality reds on the west side of the bridge. It proves that the water quality must be the best it's ever been along with no commercial fishing resulting in better fish.

After a little success on the weekend we hit the harbour this arvo after I picked up my bloke from school. The wind was very gusty to say the least and almost pulled the pin after half an hour but we stuck in there and managed a couple nice reds, one 45cm and the other 43cm. Both west of the bridge and caught on squid.

Prawns or nippers. If i'm to lazy to pump nippers, then a pack of prawns the go, generally pick up 20 whiting in an hour!
Wow I would be happy to sit and catch whiting all day!
-
Awesome stuff. Your the man of port Stephens! What do you catch whiting on?
-
Well done jnr!!!!! How big where the bait whiting?
-
Apple tree bay on the jetty at night. Pays to have a good light as they are small at times and chase but don't take your jig
-
Soapies are not too fussy on bait. We caught them on half pillies and also frozen squid strips. I find as they get bigger they get fussier that's why I can't catch them!
-
Jackets always on. They actually ask for them at the ramp now before we launch.
-
Awesome. I always leave the boat at home when we go up there thinking the bay only produced dolphins !

The wife had a kitchen tea party to go to this arvo so was a good chance to take my little boys for a quick run around Brooklyn. Got in the water around 130 so was not really expecting to catch much. We got a few soapies all 45-50cm. All went back so I can catch them next year. Really good fun for the boys.

Nice fish! Was that caught inside the bay?
