  1. Been out probably last 4 days in Middle Harbour and its been hardwork - very little surface action to be seen when I've been out. Small tailor are about with Mac (mack?) tuna also lurking beneath slicks on the surface probably managed one per trip (generally they're moving off before I've unhooked). Might've had a frigate mackeral (larger size-wise than the Mac's) follow once and also a rat king but no takers. The Tailor will take anything moving fast SP's or metals, the Mac's ive only had on the metals: an 11g raider with a big single hook (for easy release ). BigFed
  2. The 10b braid combo did the trick Only a rat but solved the mystery.... Elated first land based King. Caught on zman 2.5in grubz (violet sparkle) Missed a couple of other hits but no dramas having landed one BigFed
  3. Ok went again today land based in MH, same result 2 snap offs, first one was a subtle take on 3in zman grub, followed by two strong runs (well it will scream with a very light drag set) then just went limp... Wound in to find leader heavily abraded, might've been a flatty (doubtful for length of runs) now I'm thinking more likely a King which took me through a few moorings... so I snip off the abraded leader and re-tie on a jig head. try for a while with same grubz nothing doing, switch over to zman tailz a few casts last I give it the old pump and wind and zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz wind-wind-wind zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz wind-wind-wind-wind-wind walking it in parallel to the bank nearly all back and fish must've been close to surface but zzz-zzz-PING gone in the braid probably a bit roughed up from 1st fish around the leader knot. Theres not much braid left on the reel - hampering cast length and given the past couple of days time to refresh and uprate from 6 to 10 lb on the braid. Lets hope they're still about tomorrow Tightlines BigFed
  4. tbh i reckon it went at the braid-mono slim beauty, having thrown a cpl of dodgy casts recently probably weakened it and knowing that I should've remembered not to tighten too much can't say I've really popped the line before with the drag (well 'cept when snagged haha). Funnily enough I'd only just trimmed & retied the fluoro after the flathead had roughed it a tiny bit - so I was being a bit careful about the state of my gear ... just not quite enough
  5. Cheeky little land based low tide SP sesh in MH this arvo picked up a flatty skinny but around 45-50cm, a small 20cm junior model and then as some bait flew by i gave a few quick pump 'n' winds and.... zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz (big first run) followed by wind-wind-wind-wind almost all back then zz ..(start of second run).. PING ...Bust off on braid, no leader returned. Picking it for frigate mackerel (length of run) didn't see it but did see a small one earlier (coloured up indigo blue in water) but could a been a bonnie or even small king, no bust ups seen. Tough conditions gusting to 20 kts but the odd calm moment. Honestly I need to relax instead of nailing the drag quite so quickly, back to base for tackle audit (had a bit of a stinker on sp-jighead/lure loss recently) and to re-rig for another day. Tight lines Bigfed
  6. Spent 2 hours fishing sp.'s in middle harbour on the low tide, a wee grinner, a 30 cm flattie and an unstoppable - think a big ray maybe took line solidly on 2 steady runs and then ping-o sp hook & leader gone ski's (just the braid left)... still 'twas the best effort for a while -Bigfed
  7. A duck for me on a quick hours casting in MH but quality show by 4 Little Penguins who swam around…. towards the end of the session I snagged up and in the fishing equivalent of Murphy's Law saw massive bust up... Broke off and did emergency braid straight to jig head uni (no time for me to slimjim on some fluoro and a proper jig head) but no way could I cast out to the buggers (tried lots!), watched them bust up left, right and everywhere for 15 mins waiting for them to come in range but they stayed well out of reach in amongst the moorings. Dashed home for a large Negroni (gin+campari+vermouth) on ice and bbq. Tight lines everyone BigFed
  8. Managed to get out land based (as usual) in MH for a few hours this morning , first location not so successful: bit of a hike down a goat track, could see small fish luderick and bream milling about but no hits. Saw a couple of smallish frigate mackerel zooming about slurping up micro bait just below surface. Ended up snagged, breaking off, then retying; then got a phone call which turned in to a race back up the track to the car and a change of location (was getting a bit breezy anyhow and I kinda go off a place for the day when I snag up/break off). A little while later at new location first cast on zman with a liberal smudge of factor hit in to this pretty flatty (small prob around 40cms but perfectly formed), A few casts later and I cast at a slightly different angle over some broken ground and felt some small weight, thought it might be a bit of weed but as I wound in and lifted it turned out to be a baby Occy, cute thing: released its self and settled close to the waters edge only to be hassled by the bait fish. The wind was always picking up, managed to get a few follows from Tailor and snagged one small one just over 20cms. Then just as I was leaving for the car there was a big double splash - guessing it was a bigger frigate, apart from that no real surface action visible today for me, managed a few other touches and drops. But overall happy to snare a variety of species. Bigfed
  9. First time post (long time lurk)… anyways.. Picked up a couple of squid on Sat morning high tide, cleaned 'em up and took the trimmings to MH on silly string (mono) and very very bendy bream rod: hooked a solid trev late arvo, and snagged another slightly smaller one too. Turned squid in to S+P with some szechaun pepper, black pepper, salt and corn four. Ffwd to today, change of gear but similarly silly string (braid) and Zman streakZ and snagged another pair of Trevs in an after work quick session. Popped 'em back and dashed home for pancakes. Love the forum & reports BigFed P.S. Both days saw what looked like frigate mackeral dashing about through polarised sunnies but only popped up once, certainly seemed to be one or two good sized ones too...
