  1. cheers mate

you still fishing that spot this time of year ?

I live here, I fish it with lures alot. Tis very quiet at the moment though with my only notable catch being a 32cm bream on bread near the mouth (using bait bored out of my brains) The perch will retern in the comming months which is a fantastic way to learn your SP/HB retrieves even land based. They are thick and fast when they return to the creek albeit most lacking size it is good fun to get out at 9am or so and catch 15-20 of them in an hour.

When summer is in full swing and the prawns are running you CANNOT go past wading the flats at the mouth with fly gear or surface poppers for insane bream action. At the moment the water is very clear and I havent had a hit on plastics for weeks not even tailor.

  2. This winter has REALLY slowed down the local bream/perch haunts as well as flathead in my local creek (cant even catch choppers!?) - That said the blackfish are on near the lakes entrance (having caught a few on blades and countless undersized models on Weed & Float). It all depends on what your targeting, Mates have gone out to certain areas in the lake with plastics and bagged out within 1 1/2 hours and the next day not even a hit.

the same rule applies to landbased & Boated Anglers during winter: Keep moving about and if your using lures SLOW your action right down :)

  3. Hey Stapo,

Nice new jacket you're wearing, the colour suits you - sorry I digress.

Unusual fish mate, you did a good job [as usual] to catch it, pity there were no damn decent blackfish there, only those pesky little blighters !!!

Catch up soon, hope the fishing is more to our liking with some decent blackfish.

    Cheers Rut

Seen a 42cm Luderick caught there very recently :whistling:

  4. Considering they only grow to 41cm and it was IN the lake itself & feeding on greed weed that's and impressive result. Usually caught by net offshore you were bloody lucky handling it, Each dorsal spine has its own poison sac capable of leaving you in agony for hours.

    Very Nice Fish Stapo.

    Tight Lines!

  5. Actually had a poacher CAUGHT the other day near my house - Dropping drag nets. The so & so had 2 children onboard with no lifejackets and feet dangling over the bow as he did doughnuts around his net.
The fisheries only took 30mins to attend after I made the call and took some photos and the sorry bugger was still hauling. Caught in the act.

  6. From memory, a marine biologist on the central coast has been breeding bloodworms in captivity (they were the first in the world to crack the code) & you can buy live ones from some tackle shops. Not sure which ones tho!

    Roberta

Not a business plug but, A tackleshop in Long Jetty and one in The Entrance sell Live Bloodworms. Im sure a quick google can pinpoint them for you :)

  7. Sorry to hi-jack but here are some of the floats I made for this season:

    cHGvlVb.jpg

Darker ones are Balsa Wrapped around tassy oak with Solder Coils Wrapped around the base - The ligher ones are Cedar / Cork with no weight.
Sadly the blackfish season has ended somewhat abruptly at the usual haunts in tuggerah lake at the moment due to ever important commercial fishing.

  8. Although I haven't been up there for a few years, I too have been disturbed by the nets at the Entrance. The net I saw seemed to be spread nearly all the way across the actual entrance. I once caught 3 kilos of prawns in about an hour on a night when the net was there. Plus some bottle squid and crabs. I shudder to think how much would have gone into that net. More than half of the crabs I saw were females full of eggs too. What does that do for crab numbers?

We have had great days fishing on our doorstep ourimbah creek a feeder system to Tuggerah Lake for Bream & Perch suddenly shut down only to learn that a few blokes up the road saw the commerical fishos at night hauling nets through a creek. In a few months time it will be a common sight to see ATLEAST 3-6 boats per morning offloading bycatch on the weedbeds next to geoffrey road chittaway point.

Welcome to tuggerah lakes, Enjoy your fishing whilst it lasts

  9. You can wade out onto the sandbanks east of the bridge and use soft plastics for flathead or poppers for trumpeter whiting. Most places you can still pump nippers from at the entrance require boat access though. The bridge itself can produce bream tailor etc. and can be accessed from the stairs on the bridge itself otherwise the northern channel. There may still even be a black fish or two around the wall near the skate-park.

  10. Awesome stuff. What do you reckon might cause fish to suddenly stop biting like that ?

Other than learning to fear you that is :icon_razz:

Usually the fish shutdown due to pressure or as more people have been seeing recently - BLOODY COMMERCIAL FISHOS netting the river in the late afternoon/evening about 2-3 times a week!

Well done - cool set up for a canoe!

It runs well, over 200kg onboard with petrol & electric mounted - Gets through the tightest holes for backwater bass fishing

  11. Hey Raiders,

Just had a few ripper days fishing our own backyard on tuggerah lakes for bream in our dual motor canoe. The bite was hot for 3 days before completley shutting off. Lots of video & pictures taken but I have summarised them into a video compilation.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xj195VMM8KI

    Biggest bream landed was 36cm,

    Flathead 35cm
    Eel ???????Cm

    Bait of choice?

    1. Raw Banana Prawns (peeled & filleted) on a size #1 Circle hook (musted demon).

    2. Squidgy Wriggler (blood worm) 1/16th
    3. mullet strips

Was an absolute hoot in the canoe.

    Tight Lines.

  12. Thank you very much for your explanation and info. So is 5in sp wrong bait? Shoul it be bigger or different lures? To me, another strange thing was it seemed they did not touch the pieces of a yakka I caught in the same area.

If Chopper and his mates ( tailor ) are around. And your caught flicking SP's you'd best walk the opposite direction, unless you were going to throw the plastics you were using out anyway :)

  13. I've been going there for the last 12 years now and never saw a commercial fishing boat there, how come this year they are around??

Look for vessels sporting the Rego numbers "LFB XXXXX" - Liscenced Fishing Boat.

Horrible day yesterday using baits (banana prawns). Was having better luck with plastics and perch that morning

  14. +No, the water has not cleared up as yet, will take a couple of weeks and only if we get no more rain.

I got mid week reports of poor catches of flathead it's very hit and miss at the moment.

The dredge was a waist of time, It's back to what it was just after he left.

Yep Water is still very Dirty - Fresh water weirs are still moderatley flowing, so the system still needs a couple of weeks clean up assuming no rain.

My personal catches within tuggerah lakes creeks have been VERY hit and miss. Still yet to catch a bream on plastics since the last dump & Estuary Perch are there but are very hard to pinpoint. The Dredging was a failure since the recent mass-exodus of fresh water from the lakes have preety much redeposited what the dredger removed.

    ::PROTIP::

Try the outer entrance channels during the start of the run-in for flathead.

The hour that the channel slows at low or high tide for whiting on surface poppers.

Mouths of the major creeks (using bait) for Bream. (lures) for E.P

EDIT: Nth Entrance Beach apparently doing well for Salmon & whiting.

  15. Only way it's going to recover is stop commercial fishermen and stop recreational fishermen raping and pillaging all the fish, the combination of both of these is destroying our waterway.

I've heard from multipul sources that: "IF they banned commercial fishing tomorrow - it would take a FULL 10 years for the lake to 'fully recover"

Living near the end of chittaway point myself, Every morning theres 3 to 6 'prof' boats net hauling off the point accompanied by atleast 100 pelicans making sure no bycatch gets away.

As it stands there are 130+ licenses allowing holders to use the lake.

    Back on Topic:

This morning was another successful EP haul- mostly in the 10-25cm range taken on squidgy wrigglers in blood-worm. The Bream again seem to be off the chew even on fresh banana prawns. You'r best bet for fishing the lakes at the moment are in and around the mouths of Wyong & Ourimbah Creeks.

  16. After the recent rain The Entrance is slowly recovering, the water level is dropping and the water quality is a bit better up to the bridge on the run in tide.Past the bridge is a different story, it's still very dirty.

Not bothering to fish for the past few weeks due to weather and bad reports we did get some nice flatties on the weekend.

Good size around the 50cm a couple around 65cm but only on the run in tide which only lasts about 2 hours.

The bridge area on the ocean side is the best spot as the water is better quality, work the edges of the sand bars using soft plastics.

The South Channel is a waste of time, the water is still a mess.

The Main Channel to Pelican Island does clear a bit but still has plenty of ribbon weed and very messy.

Some nice bream have been caught in the North Channel near three ways using chicken fillets, also the boy's have been getting a few bream on the jetties early in the mornings.

Being a weekend fisherman I have to rely on others for information. Word has it that nice whiting are being caught on the beach using live beach worms.

No perch and no prawns, been a great season though, so can't complain about that.

Getting close to Black Fishing season but there is no weed it is all dead at the moment, but will grow soon if we don't get any rain.

    Cheers Steve.

Mate, Ive been fishing the past 3 mornings off my property in ourimbah creek i've been getting nothing but perch almost every cast in some locations using simple plastics (land based) - Bream are slowly re-claiming their snags within the creek

  17. So what should you spray your hooks and swivels with if they get salt water on them??

Lanolin Oil... That stuff is gold and works on everything from outboards to first aid :risata:
