Hi gully 27, I have a gen3 HDS 7 and find it excellent- been using it for 7 months now and very powerful unit that delivers more than I am needing or able to take advantage of. I have the platinum navionics card and side scan function as well (for fresh water). My previous sounder was Humminbird, but after research and talking with others in the fishing club, net for Lowrance and I'm not sorry I did.

Good on you for sticking with it - you certainly have disease. I also went out Sat all night to no effect - blinking cold wasn't it.

Sat night was very cold and fish less - couldn't even get lives - all we caught were 2 bream - legal, but released them. Tried middle Harbour, parramatta River, lower harbour and Spit - all to no avail. I have decided that even with 4 layers and a heated Jacket, I'm too much of a wimp to fish mid winter overnighters.

Drifting from S.E. to N.W. light ball sinker with squid strips

Hit the water at 5.30am to chase kingies. We headed to Middle Head, then South Head for squid, but couldn't get a follow, so went to Sow and Pigs again no squid and not even a Yakkas. Got lots of undersized Trevally and a bucket load of leather jacket. We only had fresh frozen squid and no lives, so not very confident but Set out to the heads for kingfish - the target species. What a day, we had 10kg and 15kg braid outfits with 40lb fluropro carbon leaders and mustard circle 8/0 hooks, but could not stop the hoods. We had 5 bust offs. They just headed straight down and were unstoppable. One other fellow was better prepared and land 2 around the 90cm mark. He also said he had several bust offs before upgrading to 100lb leader. Even though we didn't get a king to the net, it was blinking good fun (for 2-3 minutes). I'm upgrading my tackle and heading back next weekend.

Thanks Snapper - sure hope your right. It's a trade off , do I I go upas class and risk not getting hooked up, or stay with lighter tackle and hope they fight Allen or down and dirty?

Couldn't get out last week and heard good reports of Trevally and Salmon, so set off to catch the 8.30am high tide. Caught a legal Tailor trolling a CD11 in red and white "bleeding gill" pattern (my favourite). Then scooted over to Sow and Pigs to catch some lives. The Yakkas were XOS and not ideal live bait size being on the big size. Also lots and lots of 22-26cm Trevally (all released) and only a few over 30cm, we had several Squid vicious in nuclear chicken hammered with no hookup. A huge Kingiy came up the burley trail deployed for the yellowtail, I dropped the nuclear chicken in front of it, 2 jigs and then a screaming run and 10 minute fight on 10kg Powerpro and 20kg fluropro. No Pics as I couldn't land it - dove deep and wrapped me around a rock. I haven't had kings do this to me before. My mate Steve up graded to 20kg outfit and exactly the same thing happened, but a 15 minute fight. Ivan was also busted up on 20kg gear. The Big winter kings are in the harbour, but I guess they don't get big like their "stupid" younger cousins that have been around all summer.

Down South for a few days with the family and couldn't get out due to big swell and rough seas - Fished ShellHarbour for the first time (Gerroa beach / crooked river) was too exposed in the Southerlies which were hammering the coast for the past week. The boat ramp here is well protected (parking a bit limited though, but not on Tuesday). Headed out to Bass point, but no luck, trolled over to port Kembla and picked up schools on the sounder and hooked up on 4 tailor - all around 40cms, 1 Frigate Mackerel. Not a highly productive trip, but given the weather, it was better than mowing the lawns or watching ET catching fish - better to be out there doing it. No pics

i usually fish for kingies all year round, but the cooler weather fish are usually the bigger ones and late spring and summer fish smaller, but more numerous. My largest catch this year was 32 in 3 hours - off South Head in February. Its seems there has been a growing number since the fish trapping has been banned. I do consider the ban on Squidding in North Harbour rediculous as Squid are one of the most sustainable of all fish species - grow fast spawn and die with in 12 months

Went fishing in the harbour on Monday- hit the water early to beat the easter traffic. Tried a troll from Old mman's Hat to Bluefish point which was very productive two days earlier (3 Tailor, 4 Salmon, 3 Bonito), but on Monday the fish were not obliging. There were no birds working the surface, but lots showing on the sounder. We went back inside the Heads to find some sheltered water and anchoring over bait schools only produced a few Yakas and lots of Mado and undersized Trevally. We put out some out as livies and fleshbaits from Bonito caught the days before. These were snatched we hooked up on 7 Kings over the next 2 hours. Three legal (68-73cms). It seems the Kings are consistently reaching legal size as the cooler weather approaches - pretty much as is expected.

The reason - according to Maritime services officer was due to a Ford F350 and boat / trailer that ended up completely submerged in the double side of the ramp. This required a tow truck and quite a bit of time to remove it, thus the build up. We headed out early and got back to the ramp about 1.15pm and waited about an hour to get access. Maritmie were there for quite a while to help with impatient boaties.

Maritmie were there for quite a while to help with impatient boaties. My experience was that most people were fairly patient and no one was trying to push in - a tribute to peoples tolerance and common sense. this is a great ramp with great facilities, a pity they didnt build it on the point and one more access ramp 9or 2 - like Bayview)

Had a red hot session in n Harbour Kingies yesterday (Friday) - couldn't get any squid, but live Yakkas and fr Sh strip baits produced multiple hook ups and bust offs. Moved to "thumper stopping" 20kg gear with braid and still occasional bust ups. Managed to land 6 Kinies - all released. Secret spot - Sydney Heads.

I'm setting up a new boat (Quintrex 490fishabout) and want to put in a downrigger but don't want to have it perrmenantly screwed to the back. Cannon (USA) make a unit that fits in rod holder which seems like a good idea, but most of the downriggers I've seen (Scottie etc) are fixed. There is obviously a reason for this, but can't see disadvantages of a removable downrigger and would like people's opinions.

Mick and I ventured out to Long reef for some snapper action - didn't catch any snapper, but the Kingies went beserk - unfortunately they were mostly 58 - 63cm. A great day, we lost count of the fish boated, not including those we dropped and those that busted us. The weather was a bit sloppy and a stong current and wind, but the barcrusher gets more and more appreciated everytime it gets on the water. Didn't really have any time to take pics. Bob

Hit the harbour at sun up Saturday morning and motored out side the heads - several schools of fast moving salmon schools with lots of seagulls working the schools. Tried tiny lures - small raiders and "River n Sea" in several colours, but no luck. I only saw a few salmon boated, mostly in fly. Went to Sow & Pigs - 2 port Jackson sharks, outside to south head - 2 banjo rays, a Port Jackson shark and 3 wrasse. Wind was cold, water choppy and fishing very disappointing - but it was still good to get out and enjoy the day Bojulabah

Kelvin, I have also used the rig witht he tubing snodded onto the fron hook (I use a cricle) followed by trebble, however only ever with a sinker - have you or do you use this with a sinker? - I guesed by the "sluggo" action that you must? - if so , what size sinker do you use? Regards, Pickles.
