  1. I had this type of issue but only under load with a 140 Yamaha V4 2 stroke. Everyone said it was fuel so pulled the carbs apart then they said it was spark plugs and cables so replaced all of those. Then everyone said it was gunk.

In the end it that the chambers were corroded and it was not getting cool enough. The alarm should have sounded but the guy who installed it did not hook up the alarm. Fix was to permanently open the thermostat.

Just another lead for you to try. Was the same as what your getting. Idle no problem, put the gas on and it dropped away.

Good Luck......in the end I replaced the engine. Lost confidence with it.

  2. What Rick said, bang on. We go shallow and go super light. Now fishing 1-3kg Rod, 2500 Reel and 10 pound braid to a 20 pound leader. We find the lighter rods get more action and from bigger fish. Have mates come out with me sometimes and bring their broomsticks with them. Bad call. Go shallow at dawn or dusk and leave your bottom bouncing gear at home.

Snapper are pretty clean fighters unless you get some unlucky terrain. Issue when fishing like this is when King Fish come. Running light like this offers you no chance. But get a big snapper on and you have an exhilarating and fairer fight on your hands

Hey guys, has anyone bought a new Formosa 5.5 tomahawk centre console and used it for offshore fishing. Tossing up between it and Tabs. Any other suggestions appreciated, I want a dry ride and of course the most comphy in some slop. Cheers.

a dry ride an comfy  sounds like you need a glass boat not a bang bang..rick

I think there are much softer riding hulls than the Formosa but i think they sit really well at rest and they are a nice platform to fish from as lots of room.

I have a Surtees 5.5 Hard Top and no Bang Bang for me and I am always dry. Go out in all sorts of weather. Very happy with it. Rides better than a lot of glass boats.

  4. No Aussie would have a profile name of Paua Fritter. So Kia Ora Bro. I launch my boat pre sparrows fart most weekends and head off to the spot X. Often we ride for 30 - 45 min in the dark. I do have a big spotlight but normally I don't use it.  I can't see anything with it on as nothing to reflect back at me except the bow which makes my vis even worse. I find it better to rely on moon light or light from the shore. All you can really do is take it easy and hope you don't run over a marker bouy or object.

With the spot light on you would see something but really it would be too late by the time the spot light picked it up. Your boat is up and down up and down so it's not like the head light in a car. Between the up and down and the swell hiding objects you can't rely on them.

We see boats go out all the time with no lights as they figure it will be light soon....strange logic. My biggest fear is Kayaks but most of these guys are pretty safety conscious.

Also, we are coming into Whale Season with the Mums coming down the coast with their calves. We have had a couple of close calls with Whales.

Best strategy is to have a boat with a hull that won't crumple if you hit a solid object. I have a plate boat so have some comfort that we won't breach.

We do it all the time. Just take it slow.

  5. Over reef use a reef anchor as you can pull it straight if you get stuck and have a Sarca for Sand and stones etc.  Also get a Anchor Bridle rope so you can control the angle of your boat so you are fishing out the back if wind is against tide. But don't use if Swell is not friendly.

  6. Wollongong. We anchored over reef using a reef anchor. Might have been hard to hold over sand. Was a lot of movement for sure. Your first season targeting snapper can be very frustrating. I find the difference between success and failure fishing in close and light with lures is incremental. Keep trying new ideas. and fish as light as you dare if you want to catch big snapper.

Or you can go deep and bounce big fresh baits. Both ways will work. I find light and shallow more fun and when you get a session on you can stay on it.

  7. When your the only boat at the ramp and the weather says a rain storm is coming you get the feeling your doing it wrong. So we waited to see if the rain would subside. It did, well enough for us to green light (Did not need much) We launched and the swell was way bigger than 1m on WillyWeather, was actually quite steep and rolling. Anchored up and got to work, whoa, we both felt sick straight up, only one way to cure that. Start fishing! First drop Snapper, not huge  but worth keeping. Also hooked a small Kingfish and had a good fight. Then my mate get a massive run and after an epic fight involving anchor rope tangles up comes a 69cm snapper. Even had a huge hunk of weed wrapped around it. As he pulled it toward my net I could see it was only just hooked on a wee thread of sinew. I am a rockstar netsman so I nabbed it and there was tremendous yelling and yaa hooing.

Weather started to turn in so not long after that we headed back in, only one other keeper so 3 in total for 1.5 hours of effort.

Sometimes being the only one launching is genius. Yesterday it was.

Looking forward to snapper season. Here we go!

  8. Unfortunately you can not just get a hull re rated.  I looked into this and it would be big dollars. Not an option. I had a 140 on a 115 rated boat. I told the manufacturer and they said it was no worries and not dangerous as the Transom was made like a tank. I told my insurance company and they said they would insure it, so I was upfront. I asked the cops at the boat show and they said they would fine my arse if they caught me. So I put a 115 Cowling on it and happy days!!

I have upgraded to a new 115 4 Stroke so no more cloak and dagger, and no more stink.

Call the manufacturer and see what they say. Prob not a big deal. If it is a 2 Stroke then It would def not be a prob as a 30HP 4 stroke stroke will be heavier or the same as a 40HP 2 Stroke.

But, if you created an accident or endangered someone even if it was not your fault I imagine you would be in the crap.

Also when I did put the right motor on my boat it did make the boat better.

    Hi guys,

New to this forum, joined after seeing comments and queries on Gomuko rods.  Bought two when they first came out, red and a blue, red as a Christmas present for a mate, blue for me. We also thought they were way overrated and kids rods but loved the action. How wrong we were regarding kids rods - though they are great for the grandies! Best fish on mine is a 26kg sambo, rod was fine, fish swam off fine, I was not fine! For the money these, along with blackhole explorers and jigging master sabers, must be the best value rods available. As long as i can find one built on the backbone will be getting a black to go with a Release SG.

Regarding comments about casting etc., we've found they work soft plastics and jigs great and cast well to OK depending on the bait/lure weight. Down to the small guides and leaders (20lb wind ons even with a FG knot is fairly big with the micro guides) and rod action I suppose.

Anyone any comments on the black with an overhead?

    Cheers,

    Howard

I have a black with an overhead. Matched it with a Daiwa Lexa. I find it awkward, rod seems to want to pull to the side.....My first overhead set up so maybe this is normal. I don't like it.

  10. I paid the extra money when I purchased the boat to get this cover installed. They inserted button clip things every 20 - 30cm under the rub rails, up the side and inside the boat. The boat has a channel on the top of the hardtop and the cover has a round core that slots into it.

It was a bit extra to get but I can go whatever speed I like, don't have to worry about low lifes getting in when parked on driveway and I can stop the cats getting in and pissing in my boat if I put the entry flap up, but if I don't....... (I'll kill the sod if I ever catch him). And i don't have to worry about leaves and crap getting in or the sun ruining all the seats and rubber parts etc.

I have had this on for 5 years and it is as good as the day I brought it. When this wears down I will pay the money again. I think a professionally installed cover is well worth the dollars and piece of mind.

Easy to forget that on the motorway you can create a wee vortex inside the boat that will throw out gear and get you in trouble.

  11. I have always struggled to get a feed in Lake Illawarra.. Decided to take the wife and boy on the lake for the day. Son brought a friend with so was really nice. I went early and drifted around flicking plastics. To my surprise I caught a 60cm flatty. Then I was hit by schools of tailor which shredded all my plastics. But I did manage a 50cm Flatty before getting really upset about the amount of plastics I was getting through. 9am I went back in to pick up the crew. Wife and two boys. Did some cruising around the lake and then stopped for a past time which young blokes love. Yabby Pumping. off they went making a crap load of noise and being very busy. Ended up getting quite a few. Then we took off to the drop off. I set up small hooks hoping for whiting. I was bait boy. Spent 2 hours standing in the middle with three different ledger rigs being swung at me impatiently. Surprised I did not get hooked. Yabbies came off to easily and I could not keep up so I cheated and went with Squid Tentacles to give myself a break. Being Dad on the boat is frikkin hard work.

Caught a real mix. Amazing the diversity of species in the lake. One of the boys caught a proper puffer fish. Then to my surprise my son pulls a 50cm flat head out.

First time we have caught enough flathead for a proper feed from the lake. We were pretty chuffed.

Lake was murky and tonnes of jelly fish so swimming was off which was a real bummer. If you have kids I highly recommend a day on the lake. We have never had a bad day. When the water is clear and the jelly fish are not swarming it is beautiful to swim in.

No great surprise that when we came back in the crew was gone. I had to retrieve and clean down on my own. No one even flicked me gas money. I felt used.

Oh and I had to fillet and cook the fish.

I lived in Hataitai for 3 years awesome place and the pie shop rocks!

Pie shop was always owned by Greeks when I was growing up. Nicest people in the world. Was a real Bakery not like the modern bakeries with fake cream and sugar in the bread.

They also used to cater to the late night drinkers from The Realm (Giovanni's) and the City for the customary Pie stop. They saved me from many a chunder after having a few too many.

Nostalgia....Steak and Cheese, Potato Top Pies, Mince and Cheese.

I know Aussie is the self proclaimed land of pies but you can't beat a true flakey pastry Kiwi Pie. Kiwi's do pies better. Hard fact to digest for many but, it's the truth.

I grew up there as well. I used to fish the Petone wharf every second day almost as it was at the end of my street.

We booked accommodation almost across the road from it so that my boys and I could fish from it, however it was fenced off due to earthquake damage that it suffered in December. Lots of buildings, movie theatres and a shopping centre were also fenced off due to earthquake damage.

Hataitai Kid. Spent all my time riding my bike around Shelly Bay and Cobham Drive and Evans Bay casting metals for Kahawai. Then evolved into spearfishing off South Coast and Red Rocks and became completely obsessed with that.

    Amazing place to grow up.

  14. Well done on the Elephant fish they are very hard to catch and very prized. Well known for the ability to fight. Also very good eating. Some big Kahawai (Salmon) there. You also can catch Terakihi in the harbour. I grew up in Wellington and spent lots of my child hood fishing off wharves and rocks. Only ever saw Squid a couple of times. Welly is definitely not known for it's squid.

What reel are you using on this?

Still haven't bought one yet for my blue rod. I put a small 4000 on it

because I have one lying around

I used a Ci4 4000 for a while but recently went to th enew FJ Stradic 5000. Big handle, solid reel and feels nicer to jig with. Price checked websites and took price to BCF to match.

  16. I use it to cast at the break wall from the boat and jig plastics or micro jigs back. You don't need to cast far for Kings as usually no problem getting your boat right above them. Caught many Kings directly below the boat. The action they put on the plastic is deadly.

Lifes good, would love to do a few trips around the Coromandel . Been there but never fished, beautiful part of the world. Was it bumpy on Sunday out of Bellambi?

Thanks guys. Was not bumpy but very long set walls of water coming in. Up and down and up and down. I think that is worse for the sea sick prone. We were fishing in only 12m so would have made it worse.

  18. I chase them on 20lb braid and 17lb Flouro Carbon Leader. The lighter you go the better your hook up. Now and again I get smoked proper, but average size of Kings we land is 65cm - 80cm. You can go light providing you can lead the fish over sand and know how to lead a fish away from structure and then start the fight. If you are going to be fishing over reef with no option to get to sand or you want to rip into it you will need stopping power. 50lb braid and 60lb leader.

I like the thrill of having line peel off and being able to do bugger all about it except wait for your turn. I also prefer to jig plastics as much cheaper than all those beautiful jigs you have.
