  1. That might be better. Send me a pm next week and I'll give you my phone number. I have plenty of weed I'm experimenting with it in a fish tank. So far so good. Been 1 month. 2e7aa4f16fefbdea60b5f168fe270b99.jpg

  2. I'm sure it would be worth a try, believe it or not I've caught fish on sour gummy worms fished like a soft plastic haha also red licorice...there was a guy in the US who had a challenge on his youtube channel about it so I thought why not challenge myself!

True, if it does not attract fish then use it like a lure hehe

  3. learn to cast a centerpin by just using a ball sinker in the park using the tension nut screwed up fairly tight then slowly loosen the tension nut after each cast practice this until you get no overruns once mastered no swivels needed and no line twist peter

Yeah I've been doing this at a local park but need more practice. The Wallis cast cannot reach far enough for The Entrance I think (30+ meters). Maybe the BC/Swing cast could do it.

  4. Hello boys,

I have an Alvey blackfish reel Huy an I could not get out to where Steve and Tim were casting. I need practice too.

I now have a 2500 reel with floating line which I can cast about 35m in the park next to my place, I haven't caught a fish yet I think I need more rain.

This looks a great idea as I have about 6 Alvey reels and line twist can be a problem what is the weight of your sinker.

See you soon my Patrol is having a major service and off the road for about 3weeks.

    norm

Currently my only way to cast as far as a normal reel is to use the sidecast feature which introduces line twist.

I'm not sure of the weight but here is another photo on a ruler in inches.

  5. Nice work hew and an interesting little gadget. You must spend a lot of time on the net. Ha and they call me the gadget man amongst other things.

I've got tomorrow off work I'll have a little go in the morning that's if the wind is not too strong.

    Cheers Steve.

If I'm not at work or fishing I'm on the Net lol. Always looking for ideas, gadgets, new techniques to try, combining technique or gears from one fishing style with another. Keeps my mind busy

You might see me out there before work if I manage to get a sleep, insomnia is on today

  6. I never used a stink bag, I only use a hand bait (frozen pilly, prawn, pipi) and wave it in the water to attract the worms. I would walk along the beach doing that until I see worm heads reaching out. That works for me.

  7. The Alvey 475B is a great centerpin reel, the design is probably not the best but you can't ask too much for the low price, but the low inertia very free running spool is awesome. The slow current of a turning tide in the lake at The Entrance (chasing blackies) can easily peel the line off and spin the reel.

I'm not good yet at casting a centrepin so the side cast feature is mostly welcome. However this has a price: line twist. I have properly sized swivels below and above the sinker but line cast still happen and can be a nightmare if not handled. I'm planning to learn better centerpin casting but in the mean time here is the solution: the Spin Doctor by Gardner. But unfortunately from the demo video I saw it spins the wrong way around for my setup: winding the Alvey sidecast with the left hand. I needed one that spins clockwise (looking down on it) so the bevel needed to be cut on the left side. So I bought a tear drop shaped sinker and used my angle grinder to cut the bevel.

I tested it this morning and it worked. Although I should cut a slightly different angle next time as seen in the picture below.

    How to use it:

Attach the device at the end of the line and cast a short distance, retrieve and cast again several times increasing progressively the distance to your usual casting distance. As you retrieve the line back the bevel on the sinker will make it spin and hopefully undo the line twist.

This morning was totally dead and the fish only start biting half an hour before the storm cracked out. But I'm happy with the few fish I got yesterday including this nice one

  8. Thanks.

Hopefully I can still play. Arthritis is getting to the fingers. I do own a few acoustic and electric guitars but to play one you made yourself will be special. Can't wait.

If arthritis is too bad then I can help. I mean I can help taking the guitar off your hands [emoji12] a bad back won't prevent me from playing it hehehe

  9. South of brisbane water: forget about it. I have success (bag out every time) are:

    - killcare

    - avoca

    - catherine hill bay

I don't use stink bag I just use frozen pillies, one pilchard at a time, it is both my stink bait and hand bait. I would just walk along the beach and wave the pilly in the water and watch for a minute and walk away till I see worms.

  10. Not all fish need bleeding but I always Ikijime my fish. Either with a knife, scissors, spike or my Ikijime gun .

Let to die slowly by asphyxia fish stress and that affect the quality of the meat.

  11. Excellent advice. I use mine all the time. The fish comes out fresh so does your meat. I even tried my black fish weed. But that didn't work. Lol.

Last year I had good success with catching blackies with the store bought weeds and I manage to keep the weed fresh in the ziplock bag them came in from the shop for nearly a year. Every time I went fishing for blackies I would flood the bag with the water and empty it and then put back in the fridge.

But the weeds from the shop are bit different they are very curly instead of being elongated like the one you gave me. I kept yours for two weeks though

  12. I caught quite a few in Narrabeen when I used to live in Artarmon. Pilchards on gang hooks. I would go light with just one rod and a shoulder bag and walk along the beach and cast at gutters and move on if no fish after 10 minutes

  13. There's a great DVD/ Vimeo doco called Blackfish A. Fishermans journey. You will see what I mean. And yes there's a lot of people that use them as a fall back in winter. Hence the notion of a winter fish. By the way try smoking the fillets with skin and scales on!

I watched this morning as it was raining hehe. Great doco

  14. That sashimi looks amazing, I actually tried mullet as sashimi the other day and was also surprised

I find that crap table fish are usually good as sashimi. For example I do like Australian Salmon as sashimi. But if you know what you are doing the Australian Salmon can still make a good dish.

  15. Stapo I was been a bit tongue in cheek sorry! A lot of people think they are winter only! For the 35 odd years I have chased them it's been year round but there's definite seasonal variations in catch rates as to location! But they are good fun regardless.

Well let say it is a virtual season, winter comes, fishos catch less of other fish so they say it's blackie time!
