Hi Tristan have you any links to your study so far? I'd be really interested to see what you've found out, including things like where do they go after spawning etc.

    Thanks Waza

    Hey Waza,

Unfortunately we don't quite have the sample size we want yet to properly start analysing tissue chemistry (the more samples you analyse in one go the lower it costs, so we're waiting for more to run analyses). We just need more donations before we start doing anything movement related. We should start looking at stomach content soon though.

As soon as we start to get results I'll definitely post them here!

    Tristan,

We done a trip the other day and managed to get a few. I actually kept the head of one as I was interested in getting the skull mounted! It is still in the freezer if it would be beneficial to you? Feel free to shoot me a PM if you have any questions 🤙

    Cheers, Brendo

    Hey Brendo,

That'd be awesome mate, I'll shoot you a pm now.

    Cheers!

  2. Hey Raiders,

The water is chilly and the days are short, which means, it's that hairtail time again!

As part of a co-operative study between NSW DPI fisheries and Macquarie University we need your help to collect hairtail samples. While whole hairtail are ideal, what we really need is heads, guts or frames

Using these, we can understand hairtail:

-diet (Looking at their stomach content and tissue chemistry to understand how their diets change seasonally)

-populations structure (Using genetics to answer whether there is a single population on the east coast or multiple?)

-hairtail home range (Using chemical tracers in tissue to determine the preferred latitudinal range of hairtail)

If you get any hairtail or hairtail bits (even the smallest bit of flesh or frame helps), you can get in touch with me here, through email (tristan.guillemin@hdr.mq.edu.au) or through instagram (@fishoscience). Keep the hairtail frozen and I can organise to come pick them up at your place, or at the boat ramp (I'll even help clean them for you!).

Feel free to ask any questions about our study or hairtail in general.

    Cheers and tightlines!

    Tristan

  3. Hey Raiders,

I'm working with the Marine Ecology Group at Macquarie University and we're hoping to do a study on hairtail diet. If you are keen to get involved, all the details are below!

    What are we researching?

Understanding the diet of predatory fish is key for good fishery management. No work has been published in Australia on the diet of hairtail. We will be analysing the stomach content of hairtail, and the chemistry of their tissue to understand the prey species they feed on. This should help us identify prey stocks key to maintaining good hairtail numbers.

    What do we need?

Heads and guts! When cleaning a hairtail, just put the whole head and all of the guts in a ziplock bag. If possible, leave a tiny bit of meat behind the head. With a marker, write the date, approximate location, and the size (total length in cm) of the hairtail. Even one hairtail head/guts helps, so if you have any to donate, contact us with the information below and we will pick it up.

Thanks heaps to Donna for approving the post here! Look forward to working with everyone here!

They're quite nice to eat - Scrub the silver off them with some steel wool or a scourer (not too hard, you'll rough up the flesh too much), cut into chunks (or fillet if you don't like bones, but it's only the backbone and ribcage), and shallow fry in some butter.

Handy tip to get them in the boat, grab the body just behind the head. They're not overly slippery, and there are no sharp bits there :)

    Cheers,

    Wellzy

Agree 100% with wellzy, once tired they go horizontal and are easy as to grab behind the head, best way to go.

And yeah, top notch eating if you remove the silver stuff.

  5. Hey mate,

In my opinion, lures in the style of the spanyid raider or halco twistys (make doesnt matter too much) are integral for spinning off the rocks. Get a 15g or two, a 40g and a 65g. Salmon, tailor and bonito, all love those lures. If you see a school of bait or any chases cast it straight through and you are good to go!

    All the best mate,

  6. Depending on what size jews you are targeting, there are plenty of big yakkas at barrenjoey (30ish cm) and plenty of smaller ones around west head.

In terms of where to fish, find bait schools find jews otherwise juno and fns are good!

    Good luck

What sort of set up were you using mate productive day too effort

Just running little spanyid raiders and some hard bodies (included a pic similar to what we were using because i cant remember the name of em) on 8-15lb line.572-hard-body-lures-14-gram-large-hard-b

I know everyone probably thinks it's too trivial to comment, but I can't help myself. It's a mackerel tuna not a frigate.

    cheers

Hmm, was a bit confused about that, i thought it was a watsons leaping bonito until my mate told me otherwise!

  9. Hey Raiders,

Have mostly been fishing for jews lately but decided to take the boat out and chase pelagics. Left home a bit before 4am and was at my squid spot by 5. Got a little arrow squid and a big calimari around sunrise then decided it was time to fish for the bigger stuff.

Initially wanted to use the squid for kings but I wasnt certain as to where to go to chase kings, as i was sounding out possible kingy spots, saw some fish on the surface near lion island. Cast stuff at them but they didnt want anything. We decided to troll the headlands and beaches north east of lion island. Missed quite a few fish, including one which we called for a bonito as we lost it just under the boat. Kept trolling and all of a sudden found a good patch of bonito and got a frigate and bonito almost straight away. Dropped one or two more at the boat. Before we lost em. Kept trolling to find a school of tailor wide of putty beach, trolled around and caught 4 then decided to call it a day as the big winds arrived.

It isnt quite the kingies i was dreaming about when i left home, but still an awesome day!
