    Structure

Hi Luc, Thanks very much for taking the time to reply, that's really insightful and I'm sure it will be useful next time I'm out. I know this probably sounds like a silly question, but is there a technique to identifying structure? I mean, you mentioned deep holes for jewfish, but how do I know where a deep hole in an estuary is? The same with things like weed beds, apart from identifying them by eye (which means going at a lower tide/getting snagged on them!), are there tell-tale signs I can use to start reading the water a little better while I'm actually out fishing? Sorry, I know it's time-consuming writing a detailed reply, that's why I was asking if it's possible to buy maps or whether there are websites specifically devoted this sort of thing. Thanks again!

    Structure

Hi folks, I'm a newbie from Scotland and joined the forums a few weeks ago. I had a couple of replies to some previous posts where the word "structure" was mentioned quite a lot. I did a couple of searches on the site and couldn't really find a proper definition for the term, so I looked it up on google and now I understand the concept a little better. What I was wondering was whether there is a general rule for how different types of structure affect the types of fish you are likely to find in a given location, and whether there are decent websites or even maps that identify different types of structure in specific spots around Sydney. Thanks in advance, Adam
  3. Actually I've had a similar experience at Iron Cove and (to a lesser extent) Roseville estuary. I always see large shoals swimming by with similar sized fish (some pushing 1-2 kg). They refuse to take bread, flour paste mixed with fish oils/tuna/cat food, fish flesh etc. I've tried with a float about 1.5-2m down because I know they're typically bottom feeders. I don't know if it's a timing thing/moon phase thing? I haven't tried prawns yet at Iron Cove either, might give it a shot at some point this week.
  4. That's a great video! Did he catch it in the end?
  5. Sorry, the thread title is supposed to read March, not February.
  6. This was my second time at the Roseville Bridge, I'm still trying to familiarise myself with the area a bit. I took a float with a 1.5m 6lb trace, fishing prawns on a 4/0 weighted with heavier shot to help it sink a little. Arrived in the morning around 9 or 10 am, fished the incoming tide and stayed through the afternoon til low tide. I got a lot of small tailor (maybe 10 or so, ranging up to about 20 cm) and a couple of small bream maybe 10-20m from the shore. I also tried to experiment a little with soft plastics and small lures after the advice people gave me in another part of the forum. My problem was the razor-sharp shellfish beds around there meant I lost a few lures. Does anyone have any advice on what I can do to get into the bigger fish around the area. I'd like to again tomorrow on my day off.
  7. Hi Juggs, Thanks for your reply. Yeah, I'd love to have a proper shot at Iron Cove and I'd welcome any advice. I'm happy to go on a replace if lost basis if you think you've got the gear to cover it. I've got a few lures and SPs. Probably need to wait another week or two for the tides. Give me a shout if you're still up for it. Thanks very much again.
  8. Watching a couple of plastic vids on Youtube right now- definitely going to use them tomorrow!
  9. Also, sorry for the double post, but I saw there's a soft plastics weekend coming up soon, so I'll try to get out to that.
  10. I know I keep saying it, but thank you very very much for the advice, it's really appreciated. I'll need to write it down and memorise it for tomorrow- I'll take a few plastics with me up to the area around Roseville Bridge.
  11. Thanks for the advice, I've been mixing the dough with sardine oil and occasionally mussel juice/leftover fish flesh. I've had some modest results- small whiting, bream and tailor, as well as pain-in-the-backside puffer fish, but nothing to write home about. It'd be nice to get a decent-sized mullet, particularly as there are so many of them! Guess I'll try the blue bait you mentioned. I've got plastics and some small lures here too, but I'll need to read up on how to get the best use out of them
  12. Hi Steve, Thanks very much for your reply, I've been checking out the DPI website but it would be good to have a printed copy of all the limits, so I'll make sure I buy a proper book. Also, I didn't realise about the towel being bad for fish so thanks too for the heads up on that, I'll be sure to buy a mat.
  13. Thanks for your reply Stewy and it was good talking to you earlier too. I've got a copy of the Angler's Almanac but I'll look at getting something a bit more substantial.
  14. Hey folks! My name's Adam, I'm from Scotland and I arrived in Aus about 6 months ago. I bought a cheap light spinning outfit (2 piece 2-5 kg rod, 2500 spinning reel and 6lb line) as a Christmas present to myself and I've been out fishing whenever I can ever since. Unfortunately, I don't have a car out here so I'm a bit limited in places I can get to- I usually walk down to Iron Cove around the canal and use a float with either fish or flour paste as bait (there are a lot of large mullet on the canal at the mo, but I can't seem to get them to take anything- any advice?) Recently I've also been out at the bridge near Roseville and had a great day chasing small bream with bait and soft plastics. Anyways, if anyone fancies showing me the ropes or suggesting good spots for estuary fishing around the Sydney area that suit my setup I'd be really really grateful. I'll be out at the Roseville Bridge again tomorrow. Thanks in advance! PS: I've attached a photo of a small fish I caught a week or two ago at Iron Cove, I think I got a few more of the same species last week at the Roseville Bridge but I don't know what it is (don't think we get them in the UK). Anyone help me identify it? Cheers!
