  1. That's pretty impressive fuel economy Billy My 90 etec averages about a nautical mile per litre. What type of four stroke have you got ?

    Hi Mate,

I wasn't going to mention brands, been there before and all hell breaks loose on forums so if it gets that way I will keep my mouth shut. Outboard is a new Suzuki DF90A and when I compare with my 2000 model Honda which was a carb model, the Suzuki uses around 50% less fuel than the Honda did, Honda was around 1L to 0.75L per km, but the Honda was a 130 and it was on a bigger boat too and the Suzuki is a new generation of motor, lean-burn and sequential electronic fuel injected as opposed to a carburettor. In comparison, i am seeing fuel figures of 0.666L per nautical mile and the motor hasn't had it's first service yet which is due after 20hrs running.

PS: That is one serious looking dollie in your profile pic!!!!

    Cheers,

    Bill.

  2. Not to start of four stroke vs 2 stroke thing, not interested in doing that but I've seen and used them all. The etecs are nice but are not quite as smooth and still blow that little bit of smoke compared to a 4 stroke. Sure hole shot may be a little better but I don't water ski on my fishing boat. My 90hp 4 stroke sips 0.36 Litres per kilometer cruising above 20 knots in a good 1.5-2m swell and 1m sea. So that's 333km range out of the 120L under floor tank. Browns mountain and back out of botany bay, chase a few bonnies and back to the ramp is 35 litres of fuel. We did another trip the other day, 108km travelled and 39 litres of fuel used in sloppy seas and a nice swell.

  3. Yeah I've got a 1000 sustain and I really like them. If it wasn't going to be the certate it would most likely be the sustain :) spool capacity as in too low?

Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk

Yes, the Certate spools are on the shallower side, just have a check, its a bit hard to compare because they all use different line capacities and ratings in the specs. Another Sustain, won't break the bank and has caught the same fish my Stella's have and just as smooth. Certates are very nice though.....for the price.

  4. The changes to the gearing alone is worth it in my opinion, not to mention the new drag system and spool design.

If you feel that spending $900 on a little reel like that is worth it then please go right ahead, I disagree, there are reels a 3rd of the price that will do exactly the same, I'm over taking about egg beaters.....

  5. If you're spending $600 you may as well put in another $300 and get the FI model.

Why, because it's the new model by a couple of weeks? $300 buys another good rod or another good reel or a downrigger or....? Even $600 is too much to pay for a small reel but that's another argument. Stella is a Stella, I looked long and hard for used ones but they seem to hold their value really well. FE is just as good as an FI, I also own current Stella SWs but if I could have bought used older models and saved hundreds I would have. FE, highly recommended unless you have even more money to burn or need to keep up appearances with the Jones's. Just make sure they come with the 10 year Australian warranty.

  6. the worst one for me is when im fishing my parents say ill pick you up at say 4:30 ill fish for 5 hours nothing and then 4:15 i will heave the hottest bite ever and its time to go

    grrrrrrrrr

Hahaha - Yes! We have all been there too I'm sure!

  7. Yeh when I was clinking through a fishing magazine, I came across a nice snapper caught on the gomoku rods

I though it was a kids rod because of the writing GOMOKU in all those colours and font and could believe a guy caught a snapper of that monster size on a kids rod.

Then I spot the long butt and the split grip on the rod and it was short so then I thought it was a jigging rod. I started getting in to them and before I new it I got one paired with a daiwa aird 2500 (comes with 3000 size spool so I use that with 20lb) and use it a lot.

It's a great rod and has a great action

I think one of the secrets is in the guides, they are small and therefore the line sits close to the blank.

  8. I am very glad I am not the only one to experience this phenomenon! Another familiar one, have you ever had an amzing fishing session only to completely run out of baits or lures just as the fishing hots up? Or get smoked time after time on bream gear because thats all you had with you? A week goes by, weather is looking awesome, you spend the whole week preparing gear, rigging up a heavier outfit, you may have even gone out and bought a new one, stocking up on lures or bait. Then you finally get out only to discover it's as dead as a door nail?

I apologise for all the negativity, tomorrow is looking OK fishing-wise for Sydney but Sunday is looking terrible, there you go, being negative again! :-P

  9. I with u

    I love mine

There nice and light but can bring up some great fish and u can jig ALL DAY

That's exactly right - What I notice is that the jigging action imparted by the angler doesn't deteriorate as the day wears on. Because the outfit is so light, its a pleasure to jig with, the rod surprisingly, looks like a kiddies rod but it's well up to the task of taking a brute as has been proven many times. Lets not forget that it isn't a huge investment either, only around $140 or so isn't a lot to ask for such a capable rod.

  10. I would suggest a Gen black Wild Weasal 6"10 2-6kg

It will man handle any Estuary jew from the Yak. Most yak or boat jew addicts i know wont go over 6kg because of the loss of sensation in the tip on heavier outfits. From land it will handle most jew unless of course your off a breakwall where really you need a whole other outfit.

It is under 7ft perfect for the Yak covers your desired lure weights and is damn light.

Ive said it once ill say it again the gen blacks are so popular at the moment because they are a 250-300 dollar rod priced at 150.

    In terms of reels:

Expensive: (If your using stellas in a yak your a brave man... or wealthy man :) )

Stella FE and go 2500 that is more then enough line and it pumps out 10kg drag which is as much as some 4000 size reels. cost 699

    Value:

Symetre 3000 the extra 2 kilo drag from the 2500 model is worth a little extra weight cost $129

    Budget:

Sedona 2500 very similar to the symetre without a few bells and whistles cost $89 ( and slightly cheaper )

    Experimental:

These days i use Chinese OEM reels in my tournament and rec fishing. It is a manufacturer who has started to make reels under their own brand at a quality standard similar to Daiwa Shimano etc Teben is their brand and at the moment you will find very little information on the internet on them. Essentially using the power of chinese copyright laws ( or lack of ) :chair: They get Shimano and Daiwa reels from say 12 months ago and copy them from head to toe, they then import japanese washers bearings and all the 'important' parts and wollah you have a stradic clone that cost you $50 or a Stella Sw20000 that cost you $300. You can pm me for details if you want, im still very new to using them and am still very uneasy in suggesting them because fisherman are very unwilling to use untested product.

Obviously with these warranty dont even think about it and spare parts impossible. BUT my little stradic and stella clones id put them up against the originals anyday.

Goodluck in your rod and reel hunting sometimes i enjoy it as much as the fishing !!

Grab the Stella FE's while you can, got myself one and they have dropped in price significantly since the recent FI model, well under $600 I've seen them. A lot to spend on a little reel but it's a Stella right?

  11. Haha, yeah, I'd suck even more if I posted that while fishing. It's always the way though, best fishing is when we are at work, less boat traffic to spook them and Murphys law always working against you. Agree about the bream, biggest ones are always seen on my lunch break and in a location that you can't fish at, who says fish are stupid?

  12. Just thought Id share, in a taxi on my way to a meeting, look over my left shoulder, botany bay is flat and the glassy surface is being broken up by something nice feeding on the surface with no boats around.....back to work ;)

  13. Hi Mick,

I just picked up a 'cheap' 4000FE. Its a pretty small reel so depending on what your fishing fir I'm guessing you will get more value out of the 4000, it feels good on 1-3 and great on 4-6kg rods. Very smooth!!!!

  14. The TLDs are great reels but the Tyrnos is just another step up before the Tiagra. Tiagras are too heavy for cubing for hours anyhow. Both TLD and Tyrnos will catch Tuna :) Tyrnos possibly being a slightly smoother overhead.

  15. Oooh, Nitro magnum butt is one amazing rod, match up with a good spinning reel in the 3000-5000 size. This outfit will catch jewies, kings, longtail all day :) The magnum butt just has such a great action and Nitro $79 lifetime replacement warranty is unbeatable, dog eat your rod? No problem, $79

  16. When I saw a mate of mine on his blue kaiten gomoku stick land a jigged 1.2m King I ordered one right away! Light but tough spinning reels 3000-5000 size, loaded with 20lb or 30lb braid you can jig all day with these outfits.
