  1. awesome catch mate. well done!! should enter it in this months COTM.
  2. if your around structure as you say and since your limited to land based, i wouldn't fish lighter than 80lb leader if your chasing that 1M+ king. I would even contemplate going higher depending on where your fishing. its personal preference really, some will tell you to fish lighter while others will tell you heavier... i fish 80lb generally when chasing bigger kings and it doesn't take much to shred that over a reef.
  3. haha ye, not os fun in a lump swell either. i normally have a few spare pre-made rigs with me. check the braid and no marks so change the rig and ready to go again
  4. Hi Guys, bit of a late report although better late than never. headed down the coast last weekend for a weekend away (friday to sunday). on the water by 5:30am we headed to the squid grounds to see if we could bag a few calamari for bait. took a little while although managed to bag some smaller calamari and decided to continue on to the next spot to try for some yakkas or slimies if we were lucky. found the yakkas pretty easy although only managed 2 slimies. 1 of which was a good 30cm and fat slimie. got the rods ready and headed over to the north side cliffs before bridling a slimie and sending him down on the downrigger. swell was a little more than expected which made downrigging quite difficult. being pushed around like we were in a washing mashine although we continued on while keeping an eye on the conditions. there were a few boats trolling along close by. it wasn't until around an hour or so into trolling up and down the cliff when finally the rod buckled over and the reel started screaming. we gassed it out to tow the fish away from structure while pulling in the other rods and raising the downrigger. once into safer ground, we started working the fish up. after many runs, finally he decided to show himself..a nice hoodlum....got him into the net and brought him onboard measued in at 105cm & 10kgs. couldnt wipe the smile off our faces..dont mind the pic lol. after this, we sent down the 2nd slimie only to be nailed not long after by a beast of a king which won the battle. hit the reef before we got a chance to turn him. 80lb leader came back absolutely shreaded.
  5. thanks for the tips guys. any other recomendations apart from the tubes and headland there. think the banks is out of the question as it's a little far for the boat we are in. anything happening around Bowen Island?
  6. any advice on where there finding the kings in JB at the moment? im heading down this weekend and plan on downrigging around the tubes and pt perpendicular if its not too busy with the LBG guys.
  7. hey mate, how did you go at JB over the weekend? Any luck on the kings?
  8. keen to hear of any reports from Jervis Bay with the Kings. i'm heading down the following weekend. sorry i cant help although hope you find them and keen to hear your report
  9. I'd be interested a copy if anyone was able to burn a copy for me?
  10. great write up mate. a shame about the lost fish although atleast you still had some hits. can only keep you going back again and again
  11. managed one rat yesterday on a live yakka near the yowie bay point. nothing else apart from that.
  12. its personal choice really. Depending what your chasing & where you fish in the hacking it's not all that snaggy. I myself never run less than 50lb leader as we are after some good size kings. 20lb leader will probably be more fun though haha
  13. hey mate, was using a stella spooled with 75lb braid and 80lb fluorocarbon leader. maybe a tad overkill for some although we were chasing big kings... the braid I use is the shimano ocea which is quite thin.
  14. thanks all for the replies. Definitely made it worthwhile being the only hit we had all day & what a fight it was. Now to get back out and try again! Entered into catch of the month as per request
  15. hi All, Long time viewer although haven't posted all that much. Decided to head out for a fish with a friend yesterday in the miserable conditions, staying inside considering the swell. We caught some squid early in the morning and tried for yakkas although couldn't seem to find them. Decided to make do with what we had and downrigged all day for not a single hit. It wasn't until after lunch when the frustration had kicked in and the decision to head back to the ramp when finally the reel started to scream. Took a little time to get a glimpse of the culprit and what a surprise it was. I couldn't believe it!! Nerves had kicked in as we didn't want to loose this fish. Taking our time until finally we got him into the net, measuring in at 120cm. Water temp was sitting at 24 degrees. Also some of the squid we caught
  16. hi Guys, don't post on here often although always browsing. looking at heading down to Port Kembla to chase kings this sunday although would appreciate any reports from down there of late? deciding if its worth the trip or better spent out Sydney harbour or the hacking. any feedback would be appreciated.
