Now that I am spending more time fishing at night I am finding that my headlight is not up to scratch, even though it is LED. Can anyone recommend a good light and where to purchase it? Thanks in advance.

G'day John
Will follow with interest. From your report, and profile, I take it you are from the UK.

Well done oldandgrey. nice flattie, and great to see it released.

I have been playing around with a few. These include:
Weatherzone and Willy Weather
Fish Time Lite
My Tide Times, Fishabout, and Fishing Mate by #%$%^&(*.
The latter cost about $2.75 from memory. The remainder were free from the App Store. They all have their uses but they vary a bit with tide heights and times, and best times and days for fishing. Although I haven’t been using Fishing Mate for very long I like the layout and information display. It has My Location, Weather, Radar, Tide, Camera and Almanac. Not sure of its accuracy. Today is supposed to be “Best” fishing conditions according to the Almanac. I am just off jewie fishing from the breakwall, so time will tell.

I have moved to the coast in the last 6 months and have discovered that there is a long learning curve, particularly fishing for jewies. One thing I have learnt is that the regular anglers on the breakwall where I fish have been very helpful. One suggested using 130mm Squidgies Drop Bears, and I have finally broken the jewie drought. Although the only one I have caught was only 50cm it is a start at least. I still have a long way to go, but it has been fun learning the methodology.

Would ber interested to view. The aircraft trails may add an extra bit if interest if you left them.

This is something that I have also been meaning to try but haven’t got there yet. Can’t you just set your camera to Bulb? I have purchased a Remote Controller so that the camera does not move when using Bulb photography.

i also have a Cox. it is a good, reliable mower, but if your block is a bit rough look for suspension before buying.

Juggs advice is spot on. Timken bearings are more expensive, but worth the extra cost. Chinese bearings are cheap rubbish which often do not last, even when checked and greased regularly. Like andysinmexico I installed bearing buddies which also help. If travelling a long distance I like to have a spare set of bearings and seals (which I vac pack to keep in good condition) and sufficient tools, rags, hand clearer etc for an emergency.

Pertek turned out OK without breaking any records. We fished the Murray and between the two of us we managed:
1 x Trout Cod
3 x Murray Cod to 555mm
3 x Golden Perch to 490mm
Although the result was a bit disappointing it was a beaut day on the water with a mate I hadn’t fished with for some time. All for a good cause, and a great excuse for time on the water.

I am with JET01. The Shimano ci4's are sweet reels.

Have a look at the Daiwa Gen Black Wild Weasel (one piece) and the Pfluger Trions. I have one of each, both matched to the Shimano Stradic 2500 CI4. These are ideal for small hard body and SP.

Woy Woy Col is just going through the same dilemma for his new Top Ender. I think he has settled on two 120 amp agm batteries. Shoot him a PM.

Yeah, I fish with a mate who has (hopefully) beaten prostate cancer, so it is something close to our hearts. We fish in the Murray Darling basin section of the comp. The species this year are carp, redfin and yellows, and we will be targeting yellows with lures. I am really looking forward to it as we haven’t fished together in at least 6 months.

I have a 2014 450 Top Ender fitted with the Yamaha 40 hp 4 stroke. It is a great boat and I am sure that you will be happy with your 481 Top Ender. If you have room I would go the bigger battery size for the Minn Kota. Mine is fitted with a 55 lb Minn Kota with a 100 ah battery. With big currents the battery is too small. Another option would be to locate the batteries for the electric at the back of the boat, (one on each side), rather than up front.

I have a Mexican Fire Raider II (Barra Raider 621), and an Impact Nano XT 621BC. Both these baitcasters are great rods, and although they have similar specs, the Nano XT is a better rod for flicking lures. I can’t comment on the Nano PX range other than they are a lot more expensive. I find it hard to justify the additional cost, however I have not fished with the PX, so have no firsthand experience.
Other rods worth considering include the Daiwa Generation Black range. I have a Wild Weasel spinning rod which is fantastic for flicking small hard bodies and soft plastics. My Pflueger Trion graphite series rods are also nice to use.
Hope this helps.

G’day Bream
I can’t comment on the Suzuki, however I previously owned a Mercury 40hp 4 stroke which gave me a lot of grief. The motor had done less than 100 hours when I traded the boat, but it had been a hassle from day one. Irrespective of the price difference I wouldn’t consider buying another Mercury. My current boat is fitted with a Yamaha 60hp 4 stroke and I couldn’t be happier with it.
These comments are based on my experience only, others may have a different opinion.

Thanks for the welcome Paikea and Scratchie. Fishraider is a great site with a wealth of information. Hopefully it will help to get amongst the action in the near future.

G’day All
John or Cargo05 here. We have just moved to the Forster area from Victoria. I have fished for many years (decades), flicking hard body lures for cod and yellows. Apart from a few trips to Merimbula I know very little about fishing in the salt. I am very keen to learn about fishing with soft plastics. Although I have not used SP in the past I have read many articles, and posts on this and other sites regarding the technique. Of course there is no substitute for getting on the water and giving it a go.
To short circuit the learning process we went on a fishing charter this week and had a pleasant and informative half day on the water in Wallis Lake. There appears to be many fishing options and it’s all a bit daunting.
StarTrail photography - anyone tried it ?

Good to be able to catch up with your family. October can be a bit of hit or miss with the weather but generally nice. 3 month trips give plenty of time to see the family and get about a bit as well.
