Plan to try dropping some pots for blue swimmers now that the water temps are starting to rise.

Haven’t done this since I was a kid, with my mate and his dad - which was a long time ago. He used to use the witches hats, but I’m thinking pots, so I can drop at the start of a fishing session then come back after 5-6 hours.

When is the best time of the year to go crabbing in Port Hacking and Botany Bay?

Is there a specific water temp? Tide or time of the day that’s best?

I know you can’t drop pots in Port Hacking upriver from Hungary point/Cabage Tree point. But looks like it’s fine around Jibbon beach and Salmon Haul - in between the smooth water limit to the open waters limit.

Anyone drop pots / get any around these areas of port hacking?

In Botany Bay, are there specific areas that people tend to drop pots? Not after anyone’s secret spot, just rough areas. Up towards Kurnell or Yarra bay? Or more around Ramsgate, or in the bays like Kogarah bay?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Yep.. I am of the belief that there is an arbitrary line from Hungry Point to Pulpit Point where traps are allowed to the east. As U say Larkin, would be good to get some "confirmation" as I have also been told that NO traps in The Hacking at all. Anyone from DPI on here ?

  2. Howdy folks... Long time lurker, part time poster, thought i'd start giving a little back :)

I mainly fish out of Port Hacking in my 4.7HH. On Tuesday I headed slightly south of Jibbon.

Lots of entertainment from back burning ops in the RNP

Cracked my "PB" Snapper on a plastic, and added a few table flatties for good measure.

Will start posting a bit more regularly now I have tonnes of time to do so ..

    Cheers

Thanks Noel! Was cheering when it came on board.

Yeah, Plenty of trag on the offshore reefs at the moment. Schools of them.

Hi PB, this was caught at 60-65m, but I’ve been trying 40m up to 90m. Still have a few more spots to test out.

Thank Chris.. Ive seen u out there on the "Ski" occasionally, mainly off PH. I usually fish mid week too to avoid the crowds. Next time I do, I will pop by and say "hi"   ..   Cheers Paul

We use non commercial 80 channels of UHF unlicenced(even though amca want to change that to) freely and without cost so I don't get what the difference is.

If it's not commercial why does it need to be licenced?

Just another way government body trying to push agendas & make it more difficult for people to afford freedoms.

I get why having the radio is a must & knowing how to use it but imo to say you can't use without doing a course & llicence @ $288

You can just read a manual & get the result.

There's enough unnecessary rules in the world, we don't need more!

Won't be long & it will be a 50 point check before you get your boat off the trailer.

Can you pick up Marine Rescue from your home? Fortunately I can and I just call them following the normal procedures on 16. E.g.:

”Marine Rescue Port Stephens, Marine Rescue Port Stephens, Marine Rescue Port Stephens. This is Sea Miner, Sea Miner, Sea Miner, requesting radio check. Over.”

They’ll then respond and either ask me to go to another channel (usually 71) and give me the answer, hopefully “Reading you loud and clear on both channels”. If it’s a quiet day with not much traffic, they sometimes respond in full on 16.

On your initial call, you should repeat the call sign of the boat or station you are calling 3 times and repeat your call sign 3 times.

Wonderful... thank you and will do

    Cheers

  6. Howdy folks..

Just wondering what the protocol is for testing a newly installed VHF radio ?

I've heard traffic on CH 16 whilst just listening in, but would obviously like to know my TX is working.

Is there a protocol to do so ?   Needless to say, no I haven't been in the vicinity of another mates boat at the time to simply call out to them over the radio.

    Cheers ...

  7. Yep, Gummy are great table fare BUT u need to bleed and gut them straight up... otherwise they are prone to an ammonia taste. When u bleed them u have to cut behind the head all the way through the spine and then nick the fillet just up from the base of the tail to allow the blood to flow. U can also go up through the gut cavity "mid flank" and severe the blood line there as well.. It makes a massive difference to the table quality....

  8. Rock COD is poor man's lobster.. Very nice white firm flesh.. Well worth the effort of filleting and skinning. I get them fairly regularly outside of the Hacking, never done so inside... It may have been a little lost Yowie :)

  9. Hey folks, Just wanting to clarify something regarding the 1 x 70CM Jew bag limit.

If I'm fishing with my 15yr old son (who doesn't require a licence because he is under 18) does that mean we can have 1 or 2 Mulloway on board ?

Meaning, although unlicenced is he still able to take his bag limit of 1 in addition to mine ?

    Thanx in advance..

  10. Nothing worse than being sea sick..  I suffer terribly from it.

    There's 2 stages to it.

    Stage 1- U think you're gonna die

    Stage 2- U hope u die soon !

If I know its going to be particularly bouncey i'll take a tab the night before as well as the usual dose in the morning

    Pb

  11. Can anyone explain to me why the Cooks has this quality of fish in it ?

I mean the system is only 2 rungs away from a being declared a sewer..

It would have to be the most polluted waterway on the entire east coast of this wonderful land..   I'm genuinely interested in why fish would frequent/reside there ?

    Any theories ?
