  1. 2-4kg. Definitely not for trying to accidentally pull up the anchor
  2. So I made it out to Como today. I picked up some 3kg braid, a Symetre 3000 (didn't have a 2500, apparently the only difference is the spool size) and a berekly drop shot (on sale for $59 from $119). Set up my soft plastic tomato squidgies and cast... ok cool. Cast again. BANG. Second cast out and I caught myself a 20cm flathead. "This is awesome!" Got it beside the boat and did the cardinal sin of trying to lift it out and it dehooked itself, but we all got a good look at it on a 1/4 jig head I struggled to cast very far, I got it far enough to use but I didn't get a lot of length on it. The combo was very light and very sensitive. It felt REALLY good! The rest of the fam (4 others) were bottom bashing and we got a few undersized bream. It was excellent fun... at least until I made the extent of my stupidity well known. I'm jigging away and start reeling it and it bends way over, feels like its snagged quite badly. But its pulling spool out and seems to be moving a bit. I figure I might have a sting ray, I remember them vaguely feeling a bit like heavy dead weight. I grab the handly and give it a little crank... Rod snaps in half :( . shit happens, at least it was $60 and not $120 at least, I learnt 2 valuable lessons though, dont try and put the strain through a carbon rod, they do not like it... and lesson 2.... Anchor ropes aren't stingrays.... Got my squidgie back of the anchor :violent2::violent2: So rigged the nice new reel up to a $20 kmart 5'6 one piece thing and rigged it up to do a bit of bottom bashing with it as to not waste the rest of the day. I loved the experience, caught a few fish and learnt some valuable lessons :/
  3. Cheers! I like the look of the berkley drop shot! I am just worried about getting smashed by a kingy or something which is why I was looking at the 3-6kg. Is there a downside to running a carbon rod, ie. Will I still be able to throw some bait on a hook and drop it over the side with that setup (just incase I can't figure out the plastics).
  4. Hi All, I'm about as new as it comes to fishing, I used to do a lot of bottom bashing with my grandfather about 20 years ago but haven't touched a line since. Suffice it to say, fishing has advanced quite a lot since those days! I've spent the last week or 2 reading and trying to get enough info together to put together a nice little all rounder. On Sunday I'll be heading out and hiring a tinny from Como for the day to try my luck. So far I've been looking at the following - Shimano Symetre 2500 - Silstar Crystal Powertip 3-6kg (6 or 6.6ft) - 6lb of fireline crystal braid - 6lb flurocarbon leader Thats where I am so far, I'm hoping to run some squid on a hook or run some soft plastics (I've never fished with soft plastics before) and hopefully get some bream and flathead (or anything at all really - I'm easily pleased). If anyones got some advice or suggestions I am all ears! I'd also be great-full for any advice about rigging setups and soft plastic rigs, like I said this is all new to me, last time I fished you chucked a sinker, a swivel and a hook on, threw it over the side and let it hit the bottom. Thanks in advance! Mark
