  1. the glass is a much beter ride ... i upgraded from a 4m punt style tinny (that i used to take around sydney heads) to a 5.8m swiftcraft runabout ... ride difference is outta this world ... mine has been setup with a bimini with side clears etc and we can easily fish 3 people (more if we removed bimini

Heres some things you might want to take into account ...

    1) You pretty much cant go out alone ... if you upgrade to a 5.4m glass boat you are all but ruling out solo fishing trips, so you will be relying on others (unless it is super calm)

    2) Your fuel bill is gonna increase

    3) You have to be alot more careful with your boat ... i.e. no running aground at the ramp or bashing into markers

    4) tow vehicle, you will need at least a 6cyl or a 4cyl 4wd to tow it

  2. I've generally had some success trolling small lures and skirts around the front of the island ... just a caution though ... if your fishing on the ocen side of lion island always keep a lookout for waves as you can get breakers come in from out of nowhere at times

  3. i was at the peak on sat with my mate spongy in his Savage.

Only thing we caught on a jig all day was a barracoutta ... which was on the first drop ... and we ended up losing it boatside due to tangles .. lol

We did end up with 3 kings from there for the day, but they were all undersize (50, 55 and 63) and caught on live slimey or yakka.

  4. From a kayak i would just the jig head, maybe go slighty heavier to get it deeper, or kayak slower ;) ... unless of course you want to get it really deep, then id use the snapper lead and just go with a worm hook or a really light jig head (which would also be less likely to spin than a worm hook)

  5. Yeh it doesnt look good ... but thats trawling!

By the time they pull in the nets most of those small fish etc are already dead, so its either throw them over the side or sell them ... either way there dead!

  6. Just wondering if someone can give me an idea of how much I could expect to sell a 2005 model 70hp yamaha with 135 hours on it

No idea myself ... but according to flea bay something around $4-5k

  7. Hey mate Ugly Stik in the Blue water series have some in their range its about 5'6"

  8. Gday raiders,

Im heading up to swansea for the family xmas camping trip this weekend :yahoo: and was hoping some raiders might be able to help me out with a few gps marks for some offshore fun?

Its only my second time to swansea and my first time with the boat (5.8m f/glass) i cracked a rib on the first day there :ranting2:

So hopefully i'll be able to take a few trips out to the FAD and anything else thereabouts this time out :1fishing1:

  9. This report describes the results of Beachwatch and Harbourwatch water quality monitoring and reporting activities at Sydney Metropolitan, Hunter and Illawarra ocean beaches and Sydney estuarine beaches for the period 1 May 2008 to 30 April 2009.

Discussion in this report focuses on the 2008-2009 summer swimming season, which covers the period from 1 October 2008 to 30 April 2009.

  10. I went to a presentation at work last year (or maybe year before, i work for dept environment) which showed all the testing they did for the dioxins in Sydney Harbour

Heres one fact i learnt - Tailor and Mullet caught in balmoral had on avg 3-4 times higher dioxin levels than flathead caught in homebush bay ... go figure!!!

Cant recall exactly, but i think the flathead were borderline on the accepted levels ... the other two were 3-4 times over

  11. Found a patch of salmon but they were quite picky, heaps of follows but just cannot entice them to strike...any ideas??

Have a few casts with either a small metal or small white SP (match the hatch) and if there not interested go and do some other form of fishing ... lost count of the amount of times i've wasted a whole days fishing trying to hook those picky buggers!

  12. Hi all,

I'm up in Sydney in 2 weeks to spend a day on the Kingies. I have an o/head outfit for chasing gummy's and reds down here in Western Port Bay, which is:

Shimano Charter Special reel, spooled with 25 lbs mono, matched to a 4-8 kg 6 foot Pleuger Contender.

I have been told that my gear will fold if I hook a half decent Kingy. After reading a trip report where they busted a 15-24 kg stick, I see that my stick is a lightweight, and I need something more gutsy. But is it the norm to spool up with 50 lbs braid to chase hoodlums?

What affordable ( sub $200) sticks could people recommend?

I only ask, because I may want to chase Kings down here in Vic as well........

    Cheers,

    Pat

Id say your rig will be fine .. especially only for two days (im gathering by boat).

There are plenty of kings in Syd harbour that will dust you on 24klg tackle .... but 95% of em are catchable on 6-10kg gear

  13. thx for the advise guys, i had a serious look at the fireblood and the twinpower, but im thinking about going the DAIWA CERTATE HYPER CUSTOM 4000H PE on a daiwa SOL 10-20lb rod

    any thoughts?

Im surprised anyone hasnt asked this yet ... how do you plan on catching the kingies ... live baiting, throwing plastics, Jigging???

That option will be great for throwing placcies ... but i wouldnt be using for too much jigging ... and id be looking at a bigger sized reel if you want to target 1m kings specifically

i recall one fisho on here last year who caught heaps of monster kings .. i think he used an 18000 saragosa with 80lb braid on a jigrwrex rod

  14. The fishing license laws need to be flexible to allow us to keep fish that will die when pulled out of a depth that will not allow a fish to return to the bottom.

I agree throwing away a dead fish is a waste ...

    BUT

How do you confirm if a fish will live or not ... obviously most wont at browns but you just never know unless proper research has been done?

    and what about undersized fish?

The rule would be almost impossible to police therfore it will never be put in place.

  15. tell me about it ... i luv the idea of a pontoon but the place already gets packed as in summer ... gonna be twice as bad now that people dont have to get their feet wet!

Seems that extra parking may be on the way

    "Thank you for your comments.

Yes, we have considered the parking implications of the upgrade of Taplin Park boat ramp facilities. Unfortunately there is not sufficient room to accommodate the recommended number of parking spaces per ramp-lane, however we do have a further grant application with NSW Maritime for upgrade and increase in size of the car park by about 20 car and trailer spaces as well as improving circulation. We expect an announcement of the outcome of the grant application early in the new year and are hopeful of success."

  16. just open the map on your computer and press print screen on your keyboard then just paste it into something like word or paint

  17. I launched at Taplin Park this morning for duties with the World masters games open water swim at

Clifton Gardens got back to the car and found this document under the wipers, concept sound great 3 ramps with pontoon, but no talk of more parking.

tell me about it ... i luv the idea of a pontoon but the place already gets packed as in summer ... gonna be twice as bad now that people dont have to get their feet wet!
