Maybe it's your rod and line? are you using a graphite rod and braid?

Pin the back of the head (neck).... If not bridle rig which I use a lot with live bait (Learn't from the show Big Angry Fish) Kingies always take a livie head first.

Most rods and reel are extremely light now days... Can you be more specific with what you're catching? The Stradic Ci4+ 1000 would be a good starting point for lightweight matched with a Shimano Jungle Stix or something just over the $350. Or something a Shimano Aernos FB?
