  1. @Scratchie wanted to pick your brain I’m heading up for a long weekend coming up and staying in salamander bay. Will be on the yak and depending on the conditions will head out around tomaree heads and fish the bombies for snapper etc. if the weather and swell isn’t the best though will stick to the bays. Do you know how the wreck has been fishing of late and do snapper hang around that structure? Have read reports Wanda heads is ok also would that be a good spot to drift?

Any advice would be appreciated mainly using soft plastics and hard bodies.

Cheers hopefully looking to land a few feeds this time around 👍

  2. Legend cheers mate. Might have to go for a paddle around Quarantine / North Head and give these jigs a go. How light was the gear you were fishing? I’m running a penn 5500 on a 5-8kg GX2, 30lbs braid 30 Fluro leader. 80+Gram jigs might be a bit heavy for my setup.

  3. Bit late in getting to read this article and a relative newbie to Fishraider but awesome write up @Scratchie

The question I have is would these techniques still apply to fishing from a Kayak? Im guessing the length of the rod would need to be shorter for manageability but no less in grunt and power? The other big issue is fishing on the drift from a yak I find your paddling more than fishing to hold your position which is a problem...namely cause it’s called fishing not paddling 😉 a drogue would slow this down a bit but a hassle to reset.

I have also read there are good snapper grounds off Long Reef that I would love to try if they are close enough to paddle so any tips and advice would be appreciated. Have fished for snapper off Waiheke island (Auckland) from a yak and the 50ish models gave me a good fight. Can’t imagine what your beasts would be like to handle.

cheers mate look forward to more stories and reports.

  4. Cracking lizard mate what pound braid/leader did you have set up?

I need to get out in the yak around middle harbour been focussing on the back area of Pittwater around Lovetts and Towlers Bay lots of flatties in the weed beds around the 50 mark and a few topwater whiting.

Care to share the general area in middle harbour you’ve had success in? I know about the deep hole off Clontarf but never tried it.

  5. I think you need 2 different rods

1 for the boat ie jigging/trolling 5ft-6ft rod

1 for the rocks ie 9ft to 12ft rod

Penn ssv is one of the best reels around for under $200

Check out the penn spinfisher v rods cost less than $100 for your boat rod and penn prevail cost less than $200 for your rocks rod

Cheers mate this probably answers my question to Mike, figured there might not be one type of rod for both conditions.

  6. I use a Spinfisher 650SSM with a Penn Prevail. Great, solid rod and around your price range.

Love it, caught a fat salmon with it the first time I took it out.

Hey Mike cheers for the advice. Which length in the prevail do you match to your 6500 and do you just spin from the rocks/beach? If I want to use it off a boat as well as rocks a 9" and over is probably too long which only leaves the 8" medium.

    Cheers

  7. Hey fellas im chasing some advice on a rod to match to a Penn Spinfisher V. Im looking at getting the 6500, something that can handle decent fish off the rocks or off a boat when the opportunity arises. I already own a Shimano Symmetre and a Sedona in the 4000 size that I use from the beach and off rocks around the northern beaches. I know that the 5500 and the 6500 have the same internals with just a difference in line capacity, will probably look to load around 30lb braid 50lb FC leader on it.

Can anyone recommend a MH fast action rod that I can use off the rocks and then also possibly off a boat for jigging and trolling. Main use would be flicking metals and general bait use, pillys, whole squid and strips on gangs.

Price range would be between $100-200 depending as the reel will set me back about $200.

    Cheers.
