I just paid good money the other night for a big slab of mulloway for two at a fancy restaurant. No regrets - it was divine - but would be nice to catch one for the table instead of buying it! Need to start fishing with bait again!

Nice couple of fish for the family. Well done.

I took one home at 96cm last year and got my local fishmonger to clean it and do up cutlets. It was too much fish for the freezer so I release all jewies now and keep whiting and flathead that we eat at home.

Get out there and get one!

Well done Rob. Nice slab of silver there and congrats on getting both targeted species. 👍👍

    cheers Zoran

    Thanks Zoran

Got a few this time last year, happy to get one this size👌

Very nice jew there Rob. You are happy when they come up around that size.

    Thanks Dave

It went hard first run, Ithought it might have been bigger!

A well-orchestrated plan produced the goods Rob. Gotta be up there as one of the best-looking fish in the sea (Jewfish)...beautiful shiny bodies and always clarity in their eyes. Well done. bn

    Thanks Neil

I never get sick of looking at them!

  3. Yesterday I collected half a dozen prime live poddies in the Hacking and I planned to fish a spot or two in the Georges this morning for a jew or trophy flathead. I tried for some squid around Kurnell just on high tide but no joy as the water was still pretty discoloured. Next stop was up river and the tide was starting to turn outwards but no joy so I tried a couple of nearby shallower spots with very little action. As the tide started to run a bit harder just after 10am I returned to my deep spot and had a livey down and was holding two rods with a large plastic and the other a soft vibe. I had a good drift right on track but my sounder isn't working so I relied on landmarks to h=get on the right line. All of a sudden the livey rod goes off with a screaming run and I quickly retrieved the two lures to get them out of the way. I set the hook on the fish and started getting some line back, I could feel headshakes and it took off on another run under the boat. After a minute or two I saw a silver slab and netted a nice jew. It was a fat brut and measured just over 85 on the lie detector. After a couple of happy snaps I released it and it took off with plenty of life. After that its was pretty quiet with a half dozen small flatties coming on board and released. I managed one more 50cm flatty under the bridge and packed up around midday. Gotta love it when a plan comes together🙂

Very nice Rob, you have been finding a few flatties just recently.

Thanks Dave, never really targeted them until now and I'd rather eat flatties from the Hacking than the Georges:)

Great session. Want to fish the hacking sometime but don’t have boat. How does it fish land based?

Most of the wharves are very busy, you might have to do some research and find a land based reserve.

Like I said last time, flatty master!

well done on another good session

Thanks Chris, I like my flatties:)

  5. Hit the Hacking at gentleman's hours today to catch the second half of the run out tide. Collected some nice sized nippers and scored 4 decent whiting while I was anchored on the flats. My main aim was to target flatties off the drop-off with nippers at the ;ast of the run out and first of the run in. I also put my poddy trap out on the flats at the change of tide to get some livies for another mission tomorrow. The nippers worked well on the drift with 10 flatties coming about and the best of them were in the high 40s to early 50s. I put a couple of live mullet out which were belted by the smaller flatties that were released! Last drift of the day found a big flatty on my lightest outfit and at 6lb, she pulled off a head shake close to the boat and said bye for now. I have a half dozen live poddies ready for a morning session on the Georges tomorrow, wish me luck:)

Very nice there Rob. No complaints about those.

As the rain drifted over - I saw it on the radar - I wondered who would be lucky enough to be out there in the rain? Now know it was you. 😁 You are having a fish, then the sky dumps onto you, not much you can do. The worst is when you see lightning flashing down, hear the big bangs then realise the storm is right over the top of you.

    Thanks Dave

it was worth waiting out and good to catch fish ina new spot👌

.... and that's when you're thankful you are still fishing with your old fibreglass rod rather than a fancy new carbon fibre lightning rod ️  🤣

Well done Rob ... for some reason I have been struggling to catch flatties this season ... so any picture of them brings on a pang.

    Cheers Zoran

    Get out there Zoran!

The water is still warm and you might save on fuel not having to head offshore!

Well done mate, I think I saw you in the rain, we were over at Lilli Pilli. SIlly me detached the bimini so we had to sit there and cop it.

    Thanks Isaac

I didn’t have a rain jacket with me and the Bimini didn’t do a lot to keep me dry as the South easter blew the rain sideways! I saw a couple of boats around Lilli Pilli. One guy in a Stabicraft got a feed of bream on the flats there all caught on cheesy chicken!

I really doubt the mullet tried to eat the metal lure and was prolly foul hooked. The few "hits" you got were most likely the lure bumping into the school of fish not them actually biting it.

Deffo should have put a fillet out as a bait with the school of mullet there might likely have been a predator about.

I have got them on plastics or nippers but this one ate the treble👌

    Decent size mullet

how’d it go on the plate?

I filleted all the dark flesh out and did them with some other flatty fillets in salt, pepper and flour for burritos with Guacamole. Strong Tate but went down well👌

  8. Headed out into the Hacking at a very leisurely 10am this morning as the wind had dropped off from yesterday. Pumped some nippers and tried the mullet trap for nada. Drifted flats up and down river for only one whiting then headed to the main channel at low tide to drift the drop offs.
The rain came, the Bimini went up and the fish came on. I was busted off by something decent on a nipper, lost a jumping salmon IMG_4731.thumb.jpeg.202e7edceb4a92fdc1f440e9564c95b3.jpegand then pulled up a shovel nose.
As the rain stopped I managed a triple hook up of 40+ flatties all on 6lb line with nippers. A few more drifts saw a 52 and 57 come on board and a couple busted me off. Also scored a trevally to keep for sashimi. Pleasant few hours on the water, eagles overhead and terns diving everywhere 👌

  9. Headed up North Avalon to visit family yesterday and my son and I took a rood each to a flick off the beach. We hit the beach in the early arvo and worked our way up through various gutters, my son with a small metal and I was using a soft vibe hoping for a flatty in the gutter. Right where the swimmers were, I spotted a school of what I thought was about 50 salmon in the breaking waves. I switched over to a small metal and tried casting to the side of the school but they kept disappearing and reappearing 50m up and down the beach. I was also getting the hairy eyeball froma few simmers as I was casting in between them😄. I got a few hits then finally hooked a fish and it came up the beach flapping away. My son grabbed it as it spat the metal and to our surprise it was a fat mullet! After reading some recent posts I decided to keep it and dispatched it on the beach. Fillets are ready to go for a meal this week:) Unusual catch on a metal! Maybe I should have hung around until dark and lobbed out a fillet🤔
