  1. If we zoom in on individual issues they're all unrelated, I absolutely agree. And on my submission to the survey I mentioned nothing else other than the marine park issue. I'm not dumb. But here on this forum I thought it's a bit more relax and I can look at the issues from a zoomed out perspective and I see activists destroying everything good.

And I might add ... modern day activists look nothing like those who fought to free slaves, those who fought for genuine equality, but they all want to claim to be just like those good activists in the old eras.

As for the FB page I have not joined. I'm sick of FB and no longer a user.

    Hi All,

For those that have not read it yet there is a proposal up for discussion which relates to the creation of 25 new Marine Parks along the NSW coast. Several of which are in Sydney (Barrenjoey Head, Narrabeen Head, Long reef, Cabbage Tree Bay, North Harbour, Camp Cove, Chowder Bay, Nielsen Park, Bronte-Coogee, Cape Banks, Towra Point, Boat Harbour). They are looking at three classes of parks - the worst option from our perspective will not allow any fishing but will allow passive activities such as kayaking or Scuba diving. On a side note Jacques Cousteau invented the Scuba gear in 1942 with a mate so it has recreationally been around for less than 80 years. In context fishing and boating has been around for tens of thousands of years. I digress – anyway the full proposal can be found on the DPI website at:

    https://www.marine.nsw.gov.au/key-initiatives/hawkesbury-shelf-marine-assessment

Specifically just under phase 3 look for Part 2 which is about 12.4 MB. There are more links on the site but this is a pretty good overview. They list the current situation and then put forward the proposed recommendation.

I am interested in the well reasoned arguments against this proposal which can be used as applicable when people contact their local member or fill in the survey which must be completed before September the 27th. If you are feeling particularly creative see if you can come up with some arguments for Marine parks and then more importantly the counter-argument.

Luderick-Fisherman submitted 9 excellent points (see post above) when he went through the process. In discussions with others the following have come up.

    • With the current spread of anglers you get small numbers of fish taken from many areas which the fish population can easily cope with. By locking out so many areas you force more people to fish one area thus not giving the now heavily fished areas a chance of recovery.

    • In my case I've owned a fishing kayak since October 2010 and launch from Mosman and range all the way from the Harbour bridge and up to North Head. If heading to North Head I pass by Chowder bay and hug the coastline to give the boats plenty of room in the channel for safety reasons (specifically mine). Not a lot of stowage room on a kayak and so what do I do with the gear if even passing through or stopping for a coffee at Clifton gardens. Most of what I chase in the summer each weekend are the pelagics that might stay in the Chowder bay area for half a day and then move on Sanctuary or no Sanctuary. What it sounds like they are trying to protect wouldn't be impacted by the way most people are fishing the area making the concept of a sanctuary redundant and upsetting a lot of people along the way.

    • Due to the dioxins West of the bridge the authorities strongly advise against taking fish for the table (which is a reason why a lot of people go fishing in the first place). If they want to safely put fish on the table they have little chance to do so unless they head over to main harbour or the shore line which will now get even more crowded as access becomes reduced.

    • I have been advised that a lot of the DPI knowledge related to fishing comes from recreational anglers – what will happen to this source of information if the DPI don’t step in with some reasonable supporting data? On a related matter what use will fishing licences be if the fees no longer go towards keeping areas open for fishing.

What I have also found to be interesting reading is about one of the supporters of the Marine Parks proposal - Felicity Wilson MP Member for North Shore. She started a “Support a Marine park campaign” in May of 2018.

On her campaign page she gives a nice little background of what she believes in and requested support for her campaign. While she has a right to have a personal opinion or preference, as a standing Member for North Shore she should at least be taking an open view on major issues. Unfortunately as per the webpage and the attached screen grab the only input you can contribute to that discussion is “YES” I support a Sydney marine park. This comes across as very biased.

Here is the link – suggest you make a soft copy for future reference.

Now for some further reading on Felicity putting a spin on information have a look at these nice little articles from the ABC and the SMH.

I’m looking forward to some well thought out discussion points.

    Regards,

    Derek

Thanks for the survey link. I've just done my submission too! It's ridiculous they want to drive fishers away by creating this marine park. It's sad what's happening to Australia under the influence of the greens.

Hi mate. I was on a kayak out in bay 6km.

Came by illawong bay the  sounder picked up a lot of fish even hairtails. People were casting at wrong spots.

I told them what depth and how far. There is fish there.

Use fresh bait hawkesbury prawn and pillhards.

Last night it was so windy could not fish there.

I caught breams when it was noisy there, or maybe I got lucky. There are sensitive fish.

    Good luck.

    Cheers

You are awesome! You told them what depth and how far? That's such important info. I might have left when you stopped by. I cast to the centre of the channel, paternoster rig, and let it sink tot he bottom just like ozeash described, but got no bites. I was hoping for bream last night.

Thanks for sharing the info that your sounder picked up a lot of fish there. Hopefully I'll get a chance to go fishing again and I'll try Illawong bay again.

Hi, I fished yesterday in Jerusalem bay a party boat was anchored with dozen drunk blokes screaming, swearing the night and music so loud your hear them a mile away. It annoyed me crazy but fishing was good it didn't bother the hairtails.

Nice catch there! So were you fishing from a boat? From Google maps I can't see any land based spots in or around Jerusalem bay.

Having read ozeash's post above about breams and bonitos in this spot (Illawong Bay) I was excited to go and try it out. I used cooked prawns which I'm told is gun bait for bream. But no bites. Maybe hairtails are not bothered by the noise, but maybe breams are different. Or maybe the spot has been fished out. Anyway the 20 to 30 (or maybe 40? not sure) people there last night didn't seem to be getting any bites either. They all seem to be targeting hairtails too! Using pillies, LED float lights and glittering lights that are supposed to attract hairtails, but no one seems to be getting any actions except their constant castings.

Oh, you went there tonight too? You think physics disagree? Well, I don't know, but I'm sure I'm not the only one who believe noise can spook the fish. I've always been told noise can spook the fish!

The fact is no one seems to be getting any bites or hookup there at all tonight.

Im no acoustic engineer but i think physics might disagree !! That sound would have to be really loud to enter and then move through water.

PS....like you...id find it really annoying too !!

Im curious ! Does talking scare away fish? Or are u after some peace n quiet when ur fishing

I reckon all the talking (and a girl screaming too) scared the fish way. I can't believe they took really young kids there, and by the looks of it they look like they were planning on staying late. It was already 8:30 pm when I packed up and left and they were still there, and the young girl kept screaming while the old blokes yell from one side of the bank to the other side.

  8. Went there tonight. Too many people there bombing the water with their heavy sinkers. They reeled in and re-cast so frequently, but what is worst is they kept TALKING. So annoyed by those people.

  9. I think the worst thing about the legislation is that it sends out the wrong message ... that wearing a life jacket will save you. I think it's going to give idiots the idea that because they've got a life jacket on they'll be OK to go rock fish no matter the condition.

I think the life jacket will render cleats and fishing boots useless when the swell is high enough to reach the life jacket. Without the life jacket the cleats might still be of some use.

I think if the government is serious about safety they should build rails around those rocket platforms to keep people from being washed in to the water. Or perhaps fit hooks into the rocks so people could keep themselves attached to those hooks via safety harness.

Anyway, my main concern: Idiots will put on life jackets and go rock fishing without thinking about the swells.

I have got them landbased at middle head a few times. NNe corner there is a track to cliff edge and about a meter drop to another track down the cliff. Need to do a day reconnasince the first time. There is high ledge cast as far out as you can with pillie and float with chemical light on top of float will also get tailor. Can also fish your feet in low swell can get to another ledge on the right at waters edge for bream light line and no weight but burley up

    Thanks heaps guys!

  11. Guys,

Illawong bay is part of the national park right? I understand I'll have to pay entry fee to get in there, but is it also subject to opening and closing time? Is there a boom gate that would close at closing time which means I won't be able to there and fish at night?

Whoops. So if the waves ate hitting directly on the beach and not a sand bar further out then just in the wash at the back of wave. If the waves are breaking on the beach they are stirring up a of food so join in the party. Cheers R&B

    R&B,

Ah, I think I got it now. Thanks a lot for clarifying. I was thinking about a sand bar when I asked my question. But I learnt from your answer that in the absence of a sand bar the wash at the back of the wave is the sweet spot. I never thought of this, as I've been reading up on how to read the beach from the wave and was thinking about sand bar only. Now I'm armed with another piece of very helpful info, thanks heaps!

Hi Guys agree with Crossfire63. Just to add I have had some great results at lower tides as it concentrates the fish better. Just depends what I am chasing. The swell will also depend if you have sand bars good sand bars lots of structure not so much swell needed. If they are breaking in front of you then fish just at the back of the break with a loose line. Good luck, by the way any time out there is good time you always learn

    Hi Rock&Beach,

May I ask ... "the back of the break" means casting further out over the break or shorter cast into the water after the break? Sorry if this seems like a dumb question as I'm not sure which side of the break is back and which is front.

    Thanks!

I have a suspicion that the sign was already in place when the topic was started in 2011. At least I remember it in 2012.  People are still fishing from bath structure and in the bath area at night leaving fish, mince and bread mess on the bath structure, however people are fishing less the proper place - the pier at night as the council removed or just does not fix the lights on it.

I agree that people leaving fish, mince and bread mess etc ... is BAD. But banning everyone seems excessive. Maybe they should impose a fine of x hundreds of dollars for leaving those stuff on the jetty (littering).

As for the lights not being fixed for the 'proper place' that doesn't seem to be a problem. Everyone seems to bring their own lamp, head lamp, torch etc ... and there seems to be lots of people there. My 8 year old boy commented about that 'proper place' as the spot infested by those noodle eating people (now, I'm not being racist, I eat noodles too). There seems to be lots of people fishing there with their gas stoves boiling hot water making coffees and instant noodles etc ... having a party there. The lack of lights doesn't seem to be a problem.

I normally use the baths at balmoral to pickup my livies before heading out, but will normally fish a livie "just incase" while I'm there.

late summer this year picked up a few nice kingies on yakka, tail pinned under a balloon in mid water (this works well because the yakka fight against the balloon the whole time). This time of year you'll find salmon in the moorings but they will cruise by the baths as well.

Bottom live bait will often get you flathead.

When they are on you can pick up garfish pretty quickly berly with bread, and fish the surface.

Bream and small snapper are okay.

And there are heaps of trevally there at the moment.

I realised this thread is several years old. Maybe fishing in the baths at balmoral was allowed back then. There's a sign that says fishing from the bath structure is prohibited now, and even casting out over the hand rail (not in the bath) is not allowed. We were told off by this lady who said she works for the council. It's a shame!

  16. Thank you so much guys!

I don't have a boat so my options are restricted to land based only. I'm thinking about either going to narrabeen beach, the rock cliff to the right of the aquatic reserve at shelly beach (which I've never been too but my colleague told me he caught quite a lot there, but I've also been told a bit of a climb is required and it's a bit dangerous) , or just try hawkesbury river (e.g. berowra waters, mooney boat ramp, or brooklyn). I guess I'll have to make up my mind which one to try first.

  17. Hello raiders,

OK, so I've read on the internet that every year during the winter months tailors from nsw migrate up north to Fraser Island to spawn. I've read that as they travel up north they might stop by the northern beaches along the way. My question is: Does this mean the chance of hooking up legal size tailors in our estuaries during winter will be significantly reduced? Also, what happens to the tailors spawned in Fraser Island? Do they travel back down to nsw and enter our estuaries during summer?

    Thanks in advance!
