    Hello again Connico

Reading back your comment I have another question. In saying "It takes ages after that to get the fish back on the bite" are we talking about hours, days, or weeks?

I went back a week after and it seems very quite. Not only did I catch nothing other guys there had no bites either. So I'm wondering if it's my fault (for attracting that shark) that no one else is getting any bites ???

I use prawn pellets, fish / tuna oil, bread and sand. When heads and frames get minced with the burley they also get frozen as well unless using fresh. So the blood is definitely frozen into the mix. That's most likely the reason?

That could explain it. Thanks again for the info. I still have some yakka heads and guts in the  freezer, might thaw them this weekend and mince and blend them into bread and tuna oil like you did.

Only when I used whole heads and the frames.... When I mince everything up and combine with the burley for some reason I don't get sharks at all. I've got a couple of videos of the sharks trying to take my burley bag filled with frames of dolphin / salmon heads and frames. Its a good way to lose bags lol

I'm wondering ...  the stuffs you mixed with the minced fish heads and frames ... whether they absorbed the blood or masked the smell of blood that would otherwise ooze out from the whole heads / frames / guts ... and therefore the sharks are not attracted to the area.

Thanks Connico, that's very helpful info. Thanks heaps! ?

Thanks Connico, so when you minced the heads and frames you don't get hit with sharks? It's only when you used the whole heads and frames that you're hit with sharks? If mincing it and mixing (with bread?) could get around the problem I'd do just that but otherwise I'll stop using the heads and guts altogether.

  6. Hi Everyone,

I went to Balmoral jetty last night. I used yellow tail heads and guts for burley. I was hoping for a big fish and I did get a big fish, but not the kind of big fish I was hoping for. It's a baby shark about 70 to 80cm.

I am wondering if the fish heads and guts with blood oozing out into the water only attract shark or do they also attract other fish? I'm mainly hoping for kingfish or jewfish, but would also be very happy with tailor or australian salmon, just not sharks and rays. Can anyone tell me if fish heads and guts as burley is a good idea?

Also, while I'm trying to get a big fish my little boy was also fishing for yellow tail near by. There were a lot of yellow tail a few weeks ago and my two boys caught 17. But last night there were few yellow tail around. I'm wondering if it's because the season for yellow tail over or because of my yellow tail heads and guts burley which they can smell and therefore got spooked and went elsewhere?

    Thanks

    JewCraze

  7. Guys,

I cooked atlantic salmon and there's a lot of oil from the fish. Wife hates oil (any kind) and asked me to throw away the salmon oil. I'm thinking ... would it make an effective burley? Has anyone tried?

I've always done better in winter, possibly because I avoided busy beaches in summer. A few days before the dark moon phase and moderately rough conditions worked best for me.

Thanks JonD, in winter do you fish beaches or estuaries, for jewie?

For all you gun Jew fishos out there- What is the most productive time of the year to fish for Jewies? In my limited experience I've found that the warmer months are more productive. However, speaking to a few guys who target them regularly, most agreed that the warmer months tend to produce more fish however they preferred the cooler months as even though they encounter fewer fish, they tend to be larger specimens. They found this to be especially true when fishing estuaries and reasoned that the larger Jewies will move into the estuaries to breed???? Would love to hear some feedback as I tend not to chase them as much during winter.

I've been hoping to catch a jewie for a long time now but have not had success yet. If the theory is right that they move into the estuaries in cooler months to breed, then does that mean we'll more likely find them in the estuaries than the beaches? Any jewie gurus here to help answer?

I went to Balmoral jetty just last Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday and caught yakkas there and used as live bait. Sunday night I used 2 hooks rig but nothing took the bait. I reckon it was because my live bait hid itself somewhere in the weeds at the bottom. Monday night I tried again and adjusted my float to keep the bait a little higher. I lost my live bait and didn't quite know why. Tuesday night I tried again and saw my float being dragged under water. I reasoned that if it's something big it would grab the bait and run hard, so I didn't strike it as I assumed maybe my live bait swam down hard, but then the float bobbed up again and hunch was the bait was gone so I retrieved to check and it was. Both Monday and Tuesday nights I used single hook, and that probably was a mistake.

Can anyone familiar with Balmoral beach (the jetty area) tell if jewie are likely to be found there this time of year?

Thank you blaxland, I didn't get a chance to go fishing over Christmas. Hopefully in the New Year.

Keeping a bag of fish, especially a larger fish, over the side of a boat or kayak, will be a shark attractant in some locations.

:-) Haha, thank you for that reminder!

    Hi,

i have the max and micro chiller bags.. Just keep 2 litre bottles frozen for them. Highly recommend this brand. Yes they are expensive but stay super cold and easy to clean...

    Thank you!

That bag looks pretty good! I already have a large esky but was thinking it's clumsy to lug the esky around so the idea of a chiller bag sounds really good, and having looked at it, it looks good! But my next challenge is to convince my missus to let me spend that money. Looks like I might have to get a foldable trolley from bunnings to go with the esky instead :-)

jews or kings wont stay alive long in a keeper..if you are going to target them seriously get serious and take a good size esky with ice in it...even smaller fish for eating should be kept on ice..gives you better quality fish to eat...rick

    Thank you rick!

  14. Hi All,

I searched the forum to see this topic has been discussed but found none so I thought I'd ask. I've been trying to catch a big fish like a Jewie or Kingie, without any success yet. I'm still reading, learning and tweaking my approach and hope to succeed at some point. I'd like to ask if anyone has used keeper net to keep their Jewie or Kingie live in the water after landing the fish? Normally when we go fishing the bucket is usually small. So what do you do, if you're land-based, when you catch a Jewie that is bigger than your bucket? I know I'm over optimistic here :-) (or maybe I'm a wild dreamer) but seriously I'm think of getting a keeper net with the intention of keeping the catch alive in a keeper net thrown back into the water. Does this sound like a good idea or bad idea?

Related to my attempt to catch a Jewfish I'm planning, for my next fishing trip, to sink soft plastic lures (or live baits, if I could catch one) in a rig where the sinker is at the end (bottom) and the bait or lure about 1 to 2 m above the sinker, with glow sticks attached along that 1 - 2 m line at the bottom. Anyone has any thought / comment to share with me regarding this plan? The idea behind this approach is that I don't have to worry about figuring out how deep the water is. If the line is tight, the sinker is at the bottom, and the bait (or lure) is 1 - 2 m above the sinker then in theory the bait / lure would be about 1 - 2 m above the bottom.

I don't know how deep it is but I have been getting yakkas and gars there consistently over the past a few weeks. I don't target any particular species there. I've seen people get flatties regularly as well as trevally.

I went out there this evening with my two young boys. Wind was two strong (at 12 knots / hour) and was blowing in so it's really difficult to cast. Then there's carol in the park plus lots of people bombing into the shark protected pool. I was hoping to catch some bait fish there (in the pool) before getting out there. But the number of people swimming and bombing into the pool means there's no hope of catching any baits. It was cold and windy. So we packed our gear and went home after a little while. Hope for another better day.

Anyone know what would be a good calm wind speed to fish this spot?

    Hey Mate,

Try using some chicken breast slabbed up with parmesan.

also if you can get some mullet or small legal sized tailor in slabs are also another gun bait.

Last month I fished Dads corner for a few flatties and EP's on the turn of the tide.

We did not manage any Jew, the Jew we caught were caught south of the Ramp at Wisemans Ferry I dont know the exact spot as I dont know the area real well, but if you head Downstream from where the Barge goes across the river you may be in with a chance you should see 2 power lines going over the river its around there.

    Hi Nathan,

Is this location accessible by boat or land based please?

    Regards,
