  1. Cheers mate, yeah the fog worries me, was thinking of just turning right once past the marina so won’t have to navigate to far and I might stick to afternoons up to midnight, hairtail are my bogey fish still yet to get one so was hoping that stretch of the creek produces.

  2. Hi all, was wanting to try hairtail fishing around Akuna Bay is there any issues with the ramp there? I have a small 4m tinny and I’ll be launching solo, would like to try there close to the marina as I understand at night its very dark and fog can be an issue.

In a recent conversation with @whiskey299, I referred to the no1 bait for Kingies being live squid or cuttlefish (even better). HOWEVER Raiders need to be aware that North Harbour, from Grotto point to North Head is an aquatic reserve and squid may NOT be caught here. I’ve been checked by fisheries (happens often given the fact I’m out 3-4 times a week) and the noticed my rods with jigs attached and instructed me that it is actually an offence to have a jig attached to a line in the area.

I think this “sucks” big time, but as a stickler for doing the right thing - I comply.

    map attached for reference.

Is it only the shaded area on the map? If so looks like you can still target squid around Manly, little Manly and Fairlight

    Hi guys,

So was exploring some bush tracks around clifton gardens with 2 rods in tow. Found one of spots that i saw japanese guys shore jigging from videos and decideded to flick some plastics. I saw something akin to ludderick or drummer near the rocks but cannot be certain what they were. But after about 20 odd casts something took my soft plastic and ran it right against the rocks leaving me guessing what they were.

Any chance it was actually a drummer? it certainly was not a kingfish or perlagics on the way it fought.

Possibly a surgeonfish they are around there and go straight for structure I've hooked a lot fishing for luderick usually doesn't end well

    Thanks Waza,

Stuff wasn't slimy after washing it initially in some saltwater, except I was getting too much loss in the water, so decided to wait till I had a bucket before washing again. Going to throw some into berley as one of my game plans is to attempt one on fly. Shame about the brown stuff not being the best, there was tonnes of it on the beach!

Thanks Duffy. I might rig my mate with a double dropper rig and see what happens.

Apologies for the segway out of the thread by the way. I'll next pop up in a report.

All good mate,I'd definitely give it a go you never know at the very least use it for burly

Hi Mike the stuff on the right is the guru bait, the stuff on the left works at times but I'd concentrate on the box on the right. If the stuff on the left is slimy after washing it a bit it mightn't be much good. The fish sometimes feed on it in canals though- The cabbage looks fine.

Try and keep the flat strands together and the round strands (roots) at the top of your bait. The round strand-ends are good for half-hitching as they are a bit tougher

    Good Luck when you go!

That's what's so interesting about catching luderick you just never know, you could brain them one day on the cabbage go the next and they will prefer the weed on the left doesn't hurt having both but i would also concentrate on using the cabbage

  7. I know someone who catches them as far up as silverwater in good numbers, wisemans is a lot further though,I do remember my grandfather talking many years ago that they caught big numbers at Spencer, I have noticed a bit of weed on the rocks around wisemans near the ferry I'm sure they would be there, just not sure of where and tides etc, I'm guessing tide changes when there is less run would be necessary

Yes they do and have been recorded at Wentworth Point, Meadowbank Wharf, Putney etc, but can’t tell you how common they are.

Thanks for that, if there is no herring would there be any other baitfish there like yakkas, mullet or even squid?

We caught a few on tiny lures at Ferry St Hunters Hill a few months ago- they busted up like Tailor and we were surprised at the size of them- around 20cm, biggest ones I've seen in the river

Nice would love to throw one of them out for a decent jew

Yep, this lot came from Meadowbank Wharf:

A bit patchy at times and you have to search for them, but you'll get a few once you find them. They are good bait. I haven't seen any for a few months now, suspect they are more of a warm water prospect. They take tiny lures (like 'aji' lures for yakkas) and bait jigs with gusto, not interested in bait or berley from what I've seen. I might throw flies for them come summer.

Any reason why you were after them in particular as opposed to other, easier to find baitfish? Just curious :)

Just another bait option I have some frozen arrows, herring in the hawkesbury are a gun bait was just interested in trying them in the harbour I've caught some good jew and flatties on them before

    Well done.

Yes it's an old photo from last year he caught it all on his own I just need to tell him when to strike he usually strikes too early, he got smoked by a few big fish that day also

Luderick fishing is indeed an art, unfortunately one that I have not been able to master.

You just need someone experienced to show you the ropes my 10yo son while I still bait up for him he's got the concept figured out mainly when and how to strike,my work roster is sporadic and I make and have to change plans constantly but if you're in Sydney I'd be happy to give you a rundown if times align.

Good onya Duffy75. I love Luderick fishing, probably right up there with my favourite types of fishing to do. Very relaxing and often very productive, as you obviously know. Plenty of good opportunities to catch them in the Harbour too. bn

Yes mate today was a solid session not really a hot bite and still ended up with a nice feed, love catching them on light gear.

  16. Hi all, does anyone know what the water quality between Wisemans and Spencer is like? I went and had a look a few weeks ago(landbased) there was still a lot of colour in the water and didn't loose a bait, has the water quality and fishing improved?
