  1. Thanks fellas for the responses.

Went out yesterday from tunks at 7am with higher hopes but only to get similar results. 2 bream one 34cm the other about 10cm and a chopper. Went up to sailors bay and also around sugarloaf but could not find a fish anywhere. finished at around 3pm

    Hi all

I haven't been fishing in ages so I didn't care what the weather was doing as long as the wind was down I was going fishing. Since I haven't been out in ages I didn't know what to expect. Headed out at 7 am from tunks in the kayak and worked my way from bay to bay fishing the drop off from the flats. Was targeting flathead, fishing 3-4 inch zman plastics. Started out slow with only a few choppers caught then the rain came down and I got a few pinkies. It was now about 10 am with the rain was well and truly coming down and the fish seemed to go off the bite even the choppers which I was getting a bite from every 3rd-4th cast. Continued fishing in the rain and with nothing to show for it I decided to call it quits by 1 pm with only 3 tailor, biggest was around 30cm and a couple pinkies no bigger then 20cm. anyone got any tips for winter flathead in the harbour?? I normally get a couple but it just seemed dead today. Will be heading out hopefully tomorrow and Monday with better results. Still had a good time as it has been so long but a bad days fishing still beats a good day at school.

    cheers mac

Hey mate, I know it wasn’t an option but you mentioned kayaks and I know berowra isn’t far down from Cowan. Been fishing back end of berowra creek from the ferry to crosslands reserve and catching a stack of flattys and bream. A lot of mid 40 flatty models around and today I landed a 43cm bream on the edge of the flats.

Either way weather is looking good so good luck on the weekend. I’ll be launching at crosslands reserve myself.

just saw ur report. i have been wanting to try up that way for some time. probs not wont try it this weekend but defs in the near future. cheers mate

  5. hey raiders

i haven't been out fishing since the end of jan this year and its driving me crazy. I can hopefully get out in the kayak this sunday but wondering whether to fish middle harbour (launch from tunks park) or cowan creek (launch from apple tree bay). I have had most of my success in middle harbour in the past but wondering if cowan would be a better op. Mainly going after your standard species like flathead, bream etc... on soft plastics. Also are the kings still around middle harbour??

    Cheers raiders

After moving to the Sutherland shire I don't often get to fish my favourite spots where I used to live on the northern beaches, but I got a chance to fish on sunday morning.

I rocked up(pun intended) to one of my favourite ledges at sunrise timed perfectly with a major solarlunar period and an approaching lowtide and started spinning.  I started of with a big stick bait hoping to tempt an early morning king fish, after about half an hour I decided to switch to my lighter rod with a home made metal lure on it. 15 minutes later I hooked up but the 16 lb leader was definitely not enough as it snapped as soon as it touched the rocks. So I decided to go back to the larger rod but change the stickbait to a metal. It didn't take too long before I was on again and after a short but intense fight I had the fish almost at my feet, I was licking my lips thinking of all the sashimi I would be enjoying with my daughter, I waited for a wave and dragged the big bonnie (guess between 2-3 kgs) up on to the ledge, but as soon as I did the lure popped out of his mouth and he flipped back in to the water!

Can't win them all I suppose, at least I got to have the fight and It has definitely reignited my passion for pelagics.

has anyone else got on to the big bonnies lately?

hey mate, unlucky with the bonito but im just wondering where abouts you where fishing?

    cheers

G'day again Macbook, like Scottyboy I haven't fished there for more than 12y rs either, but 'back in the day' the ovens produced heaps of big tuna ,kings and gamefish for live-bait anglers by day plus Big Mulloway and a lot of big sharks live-baiting of a night,  There must still be a way down as when trolling past in the boat a couple of years ago, there were about 10 guys fishing there. However, this was primarily a live-bait spot and South Whale more favoured by spin fisho's. It is a fair walk around from the ocean pool. The easy access used to be from the same then vacant lot in Rayner Rd then down an easy 10 metre rope assisted climb, pretty much the same as the ovens. If you take the long walk around to South Whale don't go in any sort of a sea as it's a low platform and rock plates are also essential. An interesting by-catch of the area(although cursed by the live-baiter's) are really large Long Tom's  which were often encountered when fishing there. Luderick are also regularly taken at South Whale and it produces giant Pigs(Black Drummer) during their spawning season around late September til end of October. Hope you find an easier route there and good luck. Like Scottyboy said let us know how you go

    thanks heaps mate much appreciated

Like waza said, south whale is the go.The ovens can't be reached these days unless you know a homeowner on rayner drive and are a good rockclimber. That been said many a good northern bluefin,10kg kingy and even marlin were caught  from both ledges back in the day.You just need to dedicate time to find what works best for each species you ate targeting. I haven't fished northern sydney ledges for over 12 year's  now but a rising tide into evening always worked for me. Best of luck mate all comes down to time on the rocks. Let us know how you get on.

    Cheers Scotty

cheers mate will let u no how i go

South Whale is a great spinning spot for Kings and Bonnies and in October some huge Pigs lurk in the washes there. The "ovens" about 400 mtr's further southeast good live-baiting spot but I don't know what access is like these days. Used to go to end of Rayner Rd and go down through vacant block between houses, but there's probably someone on here that would know new route down

cheers wazatherfisherman is the ledge at south whale the one near the ocean pool or futher down?

  10. Hi All

used to fish from the rocks a lot on the south coast chasing bream, drummer and grouper but i have never tried it up here in Sydney. Just wondering if anyone can point me in a general direction to where i could target pelagics or drummer from the rocks on the Northen Beaches. would love to catch a bonnie or king from the stones. Also is it to late in the season to be targeting pelagics from the stones?

    cheers in advance

The boat ramp at roseville is full of yakkas, that's where I get mine. That whole area is full of squid too, especially the little cove just north of the ramp.

Cheers mate thanks for the help.

mate, i know you want west of the bridge but there are some good spots around Balmoral and with squid jigs, you can go to Sagrado and fish the weed banks and structure around there for squid which is west of the spit

Thanks mate just wondering whereabouts sagrado is??

  12. Hey Raiders

I have never tried to catch live bait before in middle harbour or from a kayak and am after a few pointer to where I can catch either yakka's or squid around middle harbor preferably west of the spit bridge. I normally launch from tunks or Roseville and am kayak based.

cheers in advance for the help

  13. hi all

went out fishing yesterday and my Albright broke at the knot 2 twice on two different rods while I was casting. I normally tie a double uni to join leader to mainline but I didn't like how bulky it was and the Albright is a lot slimmer. I have been using the Albright knot for the past 2 months and this has never happened before. I normally do 6-8 wraps up and down, is this a good amount?

Anyone know why it would be slipping/braking or any good slim leader knot for casting beside the FG as its a bit tricky to tie in a kayak.

Hey mac plenty kings west of the spit bridge look for surface boils, In My opinion first light to early morning are best and if you can time this with a tide change even better and top of the tide being best. However King fish will turn up unexpected anytime anywhere Ive caught them near  pickering point. Put middle harbour kings in the search bar of this site and get lots and lots of information.

    cheers mate much appreciated.

  15. Hi,

I’m a long-time reader but contribute very little to the forums. I’m a mad keen kayak fisho and want to hit up middle harbour for kingfish this summer in the yak. Anyone got any tips or advice for fishing this area. I normally launch for tunks and fish the upper bays but I have never been around or past the spit. I know squid are gun baits and are there any spots to catch squid around middle harbour? Or any bait grounds for yakka’s up that way? If I can get live bait I probs troll them around the moorings in middle harbour, is this method recommended? Any tides or moon phases that work better than others? I’m Not after your “spot x” just tips and advice for fishing the area and land my first king. Any help much appreciated.

    Cheers,

    Mac

if you dive take notice where you are seeing schools of yakkas then go that area in yak and burley with bread..rick

yer i was trying to find the yakkas but all i could find where pesky pike.

    Hello mate,

I was off there yesterday afternoon on the yak. Only fished it twice, though.

There are plenty of pike around at the moment which might make good livebait, but you can also get get squid over the shallow reefs. A sounder is very helpful.

A small southerly swell is safest - easterlies make the launch hard (so I've been told). Watch yourself against the current - easy to get dragged out.

Soft plastics go well, but be prepared to snag occasionally.

Also ran across a large shark yesterday - he was about 20 metres from me mucking about with something on the surface - and a whale passed through me and the boats. Pretty cool, just be aware that you're not in the estuary any more! If it's your first time offshore, I'd recommend going with someone.

In terms of where to go - about 1km off the point NNE is where most boats go. Just follow them.

    Cheers

cheers razzell, how did u end up going out at long reef the other day?

  18. hi all

Brand new to the forum but i have been kayaking for a while now and have mostly been fishing in middle harbour but i want to start fishing off long reef. Only problem is i got no idea what to expect or what to target. I went diving off long reef headland the other day and saw kingfish, salmon and snapper so should i be targeting them or should i look into targeting another fish. Also are there any safety consideration i should be making for fishing the area. Can u get live bait out off long reef or is it more of a lure fishing spot. I plan on a trip out on Tuesday and want to target kings with live bait and snapper with plastics but not sure if thats a good technique for the area. any help would be great and helpful.

    cheers macbook
