  1. Interesting about the cow i wonder what happened to the poor thing. The cabins there sound alot like the ones in Royal Nat Park. We went for a walk at nigh time and saw more petrel chicks than you could count (no fear of humans) and a lot of green and golden bell frogs. Fishing - Got a Sargent Baker on a soft plastic and a fiddler ray on pilchard. Nothing would touch a the live yakkas we drifted for a good hour or so. Also caught 5 Mado at once on a sabiki rig - not what i wanted but entertaining all the same. Thanks for the tips re dangerous spot. I'll have to get back there soon, such a special place.
  2. Alright Im back from an amazing weekend. Highly recommend. I anchored the boat until dusk and then just took one of the private moorings - a few other boats did the same thing. Slept soundly and got in no ones way. 😴
  3. Cheers Rick! Ive got 2 sand anchors and a reef one so ill probably put all three out for a good nights sleep
  4. Finally I have a camping reservation I dont need to cancel due to foul weather - and I'm super excited. I found an old webpage that elludes to there being public moorings in North Beach and Coal Shaft Bay, although not mentioned anywhere else on the internet. Are there still public (pink?) moorings available at Broughton Island ?
  5. Hi all, I've got a Tohatsu M30H (2 stroke) in that very dark blue (almost black). Its lost a bit of paint from mid way down the leg and id like to fix it (around the size of 50 cent piece). Can see the aluminium underneath is oxidising. Does anyone know the paint code, or where to buy touch up paint from ? Thanks 😀
  6. @dunc333 Mine almost certainly doesn't comply. But it was only 50 bux delivered, and will be fit for purpose (having a play with). It can also be programmed to normal CB radio freqs too so its not entirely worthless.
  7. @motiondaveAU Falcons are legendary, I know because I follow the FB page "AU Falcons doing incredible things". You're keeping a legend on the road. Ramps in wealthy areas are the worst ! My experience is people telling me I need to back my trailer in further - I always say "you just wait mate, this will blow your mind". And then I pull the pin for the hinge on my tilt trailer. I give them my best cheshire cat grin and they shut-up right away, I do agree, do what is sensible and safe - one only needs to read the cars book and note the towbar's capacity.
  8. I've been towing boats with small fwd cars for years. I have never had any issues at all. All my boats have been right on the limit of unbraked, and I often would take my boat from Sydney to Port kembla. Never have I cooked the brakes on mount ousley. I have never ever had slippage issues pulling the boat out, and I don't shy from any ramp. Being front wheel drive, like others have said - your drive wheels are further up the ramp. My current boat is a 4.3 savage kestral mk2 with a 30hp - being a deep wide body (similar to a quintrex dory). I was towing it with a 2005 lancer auto (the gutless engine too, not that mivec). It's most recent trip was 3 weeks ago to Port macq with the boat filled with things for a house move. No issues. I've since sold this car. Here is a picture of my current tow car, with my previous boat. A regular 12 foot tinny with a 25hp on it. This car (95 excel) tows my new setup just fine, better than the auto lancer did - probably because the lancer was auto. I always get a lot of strange looks at ramps by skeptics, but remember in the 50 - 70s people were towing large caravans with 70hp cars and drum brakes all round. You'll be fine.
  9. Hi All, I bought a chinese VHF portable handset. It comes without channels pre-configured, but its easy enough to do with opensource software called CHIRP. I have found a list of channels here https://www.acma.gov.au/vhf-maritime-mobile-band-channel-allocations But I am thinking I only really need a few of those. Which ones are essential (besides 16) ?
  10. thanks for the replies raiders, much appreciate the photo too. Its a 2011, doesnt appear to have adjustment at the linkage point. Also I think there might not even be a problem. I was checking if it was in gear by selecting forward on the shift lever, then spinning the prop clockwise (aka the way it would spin when in forward). This does not turn the engine, the lower unit just ticks. When i put it in reverse on the gear select lever and then turn the propellor appropriately it does turn the engine. Is it possible the prop shaft has a free-wheel type feature (like a bicycle hub) and ive just never noticed ? (10 years of boating, 3 years with this outboard). I tested this theory by putting the motor in forward, disabling the lock which prohibits starting in gear, and pulling the cord. The prop spins fine. Everyones thoughts is much appreciated ! I feel a bit silly now.
  11. Hi All, Changed my water pump impellor tonight on a Tohatsu m30h (30hp 2 stroke tiller steer) - which of course means the shift linkage was seperated and lower unit off. After re-assembly, when i click the shift lever into forward it seems fine, but then i spin the prop the lower unit makes a tick tick noise and does not turn the motor. Neutral and Reverse appear to function fine. Any ideas ? i was careful when I put it back together and the shift linkage was almost perfect lined up before slipping the spring pin in.
  12. Hi All, I have a stubborn roll pin which I'm having trouble removing. Im cautious of tapping it hard with a hammer because i dont want to bend the linkage shafts. It's difficult to support the shaft while striking (photo attached of pin position). I keep spraying it with penetrating oil and leaving it - plan on attacking again soon. Does anyone use and recommend a tool like this ?
  13. It did exactly this! I released it quickly and it stayed at the surface upside down and drifted away from the boat. I felt bad and didn't want it to do to waste, so I started my boat and drove over to it. I turned it back up the right way and gave it a gentle push and it darted off to the depths. Thanks for the replies all.
  14. So after a week of googling like crazy I couldn't find it (so I posted here). One last try and I found it! Full set of diagrams with part numbers for 25 / 30 / 40 hp tohatsu can be found here. https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=http://www.tohatsu.de/media/docs/uploads/partslist/document-document/2013M2530HJETMX2530H002-21025-9.pdf&ved=2ahUKEwiPn7uu8-TiAhVJX30KHaNxC-IQFjAOegQIBRAH&usg=AOvVaw0PjPqt09Ty6iNN4Iehbx_0 Hope it can help someone!
  15. Hi Raiders, I am trying to locate a parts diagram for my outboard, Tohatsu M30h. Specifically, the diagram with parts numbers for the tiller handle assembly. Has anybody got this page or know where I can get it? (or a full set of diagrams) Thanks, Jarrod
  16. Any body know the name of a jet black fish that is often caught while fishing for Luderick ? It's not a drummer species, and its not edible. Also not kelp fish / kale. Its all black.
  17. Sorry couldn't attach photos they were too big. The glue was called 'Cylinlock 844' and the manufacture was Hernon. Red 50ml bottle, green coloured glue. It was just 13bux from my local bearings specialist (the loctite equivalent is around 50 if you can find it)
  18. OK, I completed the job this afternoon. I included a photo of the glue, it's especially for these things. As others have said, I also scored the surface using a punch so that there was more friction between the race and the hub - this worked very well and may have been enough without the glue. But I had the glue anyway so in it went. I also realised, (phew!) that when I was driving the race in glue dripped down onto the larger race on the other side - something I'm glad I realised before it set and I'd have to replace the large race again.
  19. Thanks for replies everyone. The bearing race numbers match, I even took the new one out and put the old one in - both driven all the way in. The old one is spinning inside there now too! I checked with a torch too and there is absolutely no gap - they can't go in further. I'm using the mother of all brass drifts (it's about 20mm wide) and a large block hammer. This is around my 5th time doing bearings so I have a fair idea. I have done some more research and loctite make a product just for this problem, additional guides say to use a punch and score the final mounting surface to add some friction can also help. I called the local bearing place and they have a much cheaper loctite alternate - after I pick it up this afternoon I will take some photographs of the problem and the solution for all to see in the future. Thanks for the help everyone!
  20. Hi all, I just hammered in an outer bearing race (into an integrated hub wheel) and the race is spinable inside the hub - I can turn it with 2 fingers. Is it likely I got a little too excited with the hammering and the race has stretched the hub? It doesn't make sense to me that this is possible. The last bearing race was snug. Is it safe to tow (just a tinnie) like this? What should I do? Thanks
  21. Thanks for your reply, Birkenhead point fits the bill! Is it safe to leave boat unattended there?
  22. Hi all, Trying to find public wharfs that are good to stop and have a stretch and a coffee/beer on Sydney Harbour. I found the one at cabarita marina yesterday and thought it was great - the pontoon was even padded so it didn't knock the paint off my boat. Excellent spot for a coffee too. (attached photo of my boat on said pontoon) Is there any other similar on the harbour? My boat is a 30hp 14 foot tinnie so not really interested in super yacht parking. Thanks!
