  2. Thanks for the advise Noelm...

I'll give it a go most likely, muddy water shouldn't ruine the trip 😁

I went once to the ramp on the northern side and wasn't able to launch because there is no proper warf to tie the boat, I have to do it alone as wife not comfortable driving the car with a trailer.

  3. Having read few warnings over the past few days with regards to floods and debris, I was wondering if it's safe to launch the boat in Windang near Reddal reserve,  I never used that boat ramp but a friend recommended it.

    Any thoughts?

    Cheers

    Hi KanTec,

My advice would be to get out very early, it will be extremely busy on the Hacking over the weekend.

Where are you launching your boat?

    Cheers,

    BD

    Hi BD,

Thanks for the advise, it was busy every time I went there, I launched a couple of times from Wally's Wharf, got some luck near the heads within the port.

I have to say the Ramp is not as easy as Botany bay's big ramp, but did the job :)

    Cheers

  5. Greetings Raiders,

I'm new to boat fishing, so far can launch and retrieve and other basics 😅

I was planning on hitting Port Hacking this Sat, but weather forecasts predicts around 34 degrees max and 20-30kmh winds.  My plan was to fish from early morning till 11am within the enclosed waters.

Is it a good day to be fishing? If it was any top hints for that area? where to fish? I would target Flathead with soft plastics and pillies.

    Thanks !

You will find it very hard if not impossible to find an experienced painter to do this . As a job is only ever as good as the prep work, and tradies, experienced painters won't take the risk of a job blowing up due to slack prep work.

I have a friend who paint cars, might accept to spray for it me  (hopefully)

Best paint or wrap on any tinny you can have imho.

I don't mind bare tinnies, it's just factoring the paint into the price, I'm shopping at the moment. depending the boat year/size, I'll be factoring $1500-$2000 into the price comparison.

    Cheers

    Depends on a fewthings...

Do you already have compressor, hose, spray gun?

You will probably have to sand and or paint remove, the current surface, plus any touch ups with putty first.

Amy particular colour? That can cost more.

I'd highly suggest two pack paint, get a good breathing mask, can be done at home but try to limit paint time due to fumes.

1ltr paint might cover 10m2 but allow extra paint.

Only boat I've done recently is my mini boat and that needed top and bottom hulls done. It's only 9 foot long so I used 1ltre on bottom but needed about 1.2 ltr for top hull. So that 2 tins I bought for top but one for the bottom. But I'm going to have to buy another tin soon for the bottom for touch ups , but will not use all the paint....

You need to allow cost of thinners as well.

I think paint, undercoat, thinners set me back about $500-$600, not including cost of sand paper, putty, etc.

I have a compressor and hose, 2 guns cost me $ 140 , cheap ones, a 500ml size for main painting and a 100ml size for smaller areas.

That's a bit of an idea.

I don't have the compressor or tools, and honestly I tried spray paint in the past I did a horrible job.

So assuming it's 500sh material, if I do the prep work, a professional painter might charge sub $1000 just to put the magic touch of spraying it. I might even reach out to one and ask!

Just wondering why you want to paint it at all if its unpainted??

Much easier to look after imo.

If I had an unpainted alloy boat I'd be more looking at a wrap over painting but each to their own!

I thought paint is more of a permanent job vs wrap might peel off or easily tear when rubbing on edges. But I might be wrong as I have never touched it. An option to consider though.

    Thanks gents !

  8. Greeting Raiders...

I hope someone has recently got a tinnie painted and can share how much it costed.

I found a couple of nice boats (3.8m and 4m) for sale but they are unpainted and wanted to factor that in the price. I think painting a boat is more like restoring it to near new condition (after rewiring, carpet... of course :)

    Cheers

  9. Greeting Raiders...

Just got a new 4.6m aluminum boat and wanted try it out.

I'm in south west Sydney, what would be a good, calm, and safe spot in enclosed waters to have a go?

I found botany Bay a bit advanced for my level, and wanted something easier 😅

    Thanks!

    Get it inspected 😜

I have fished out if a later model with a 150 inboard, did ok although more of a family cruise about than a dedicated fishing boat but hey that's what you might be looking for?

At this price range I better inspect it :D . Indeed I wanted both cruising and fishing, so after inspecting several boats, I decided a bowrider is the way to go.

    13 hours ago, noelm said:

On closer inspection, it is a 4 stroke, plenty of rust on the bottom of the V sections of the trailer.

Yes, the seller did confirm that it's rusty, and the price is negotiable, I didn't negotiate yet, so hopefully we can reach a good deal

    11 hours ago, jeffb5.8 said:

the price seems a little high, but it’s not unrealistic And probably has factored in negotiation room, think more like $21k With that trailer. If the trailer wasn’t so bad then maybe $23k.

Spot-on Jeffb5.8, the good thing about boats is that they don't depreciate like cars. I checked with a dealer, and a brand new Stacer bowrider 5.1sh meter with 115 HP Yammy is about $45K, and a comparable size boat 16 years old is 50% the price ! compare to cars that loses 50% in few years, 16 years... 90% !

@kanTec. Looks over priced to me tbh.

I agree GoingFishing, only truth proves true, I'm not in a hurry to buy and any seller will get to realize that there is a cap to the price he/she can ask for as the market will reject higher prices. Usually I would keep a good contact with the seller and most sellers are willing to honestly tell what's the max offer they were given. Happy to top that up a bit and close a deal with a reasonable price.

Let's see how this goes ...

Cheers gents for your your advise !

In all the years I have managed this forum there is ALWAYS an argument about motors especially when etec is mentioned.

It is a bit like the Holden vs Ford discussions.

@kanTec have you gained any answers here? I am ready to close this post.

Yes got good answers and the 2s vs 4s argument was definitely beneficial. Lots to learn.

Please feel free to close the thread

Thanks to all who shared their knowledge

  12. Though I'm inexperienced in boating, probably I'll give my view from a neutral position.

My friend trades boats, he told me the market prefer modern 4 strokes. The two stroke a boat owner have might be a great one and served flawlessly for many years, but the market prefers the 4 stroke. Eventually I'll need to sell, and the market is the judge how will it sell.

Kantec, ask any outboard mechanic not affiliated with selling engines their opinions on buying any modern two stroke engine. Also take note on what comercial boats have strapped on the back when you are around the water, or even spend a few hours around a busy ramp and possibly asking people what they think of the engines they are using and don't forget to ask how many hours on them.

Honestly I was always tending towards 4 stroke and needed a small push to avoid 2 stroke, and smoke is definitely a no-go even if the chance are like 10%, still no point in going down that path, plus I prefer to change oil rather than mix it with fuel. The only reason I considered two stroke was that most boat within my budget are so. I'll basically have to be more patient and wait a bit, something will eventually pop up.

I know when you put in all these factors it becomes a pain in the ass but in the long run it’ll serve you well it’s good that others pointed out really valuable points here which tou should feel confident to buy it on your own. Btw do you have to get a bowrider? What type of use you want to get out of a boat? Family, fishing etc?

Good point to consider. I prefer a Bowrider as I'm trying to satisfy all the missus preferences to lure her into the boat otherwise trips will be restricted  😅, and having two small kids, they will love the bow . I'm assuming a runabout around 5m will do too. It'll be used for fishing, family sports, day out on the river, and probably going to a FAD on a calm day with a mate after I build confidence.

Personaly I can't stand the smell from two stroke oil when out on the water, it made our whole family sick when we once had one.

Thanks JonD... very insightful. The smoke remark kills the deal to be honest, my wife can't take any smoke and this will make it very difficult for us to use the boat.

I see I need to do more homework before proceeding.

    Are all two-stroke engines smelly?

Just looking at that motors age it looks like its done more that 70 hours to me but then you need to look at that & the service history as well.

It's done 140 on the clock, the guy mixed hours with HP.

Trailer is only just big enough, impossible to check motor hours on that model, wonder why the upholstery was redone?

Maybe some photos, links and info on the boat would help others to have an opinion on the boat but good luck though.

Good point Madwave. Here is the link:

    Price: $18,300

I need to find someone to inspect it as I mentioned I'm ignorant when it comes to boats.

  17. Greeting raiders...

At last I settled on a bowrider Aluminium boat...

I need to inspect it now and I know nothing about boats 😅. Advise needed.

Who can I contact to inspect the boat around Fairfield? The seller will tow the boat to a close boat ramp, could be George river.

Any recommendations? And how much should I expect to pay?

    Thanks heaps

  18. Hi,

Probably this has been raised previously, couldn't find a topic to read.

Can I keep a small boat (4-5M) on the street? I know some councils doesn't like it to stay more than 3 weeks in the same spot.

Where do most people keep their boats?

    Thanks !
