  1. Hey guys,

I'm in the process of fitting out this little tinnie for fishing. I'm in two minds about either a casting deck using the 2 front seats as the supports, or removing the middle seat and building a floor.

I like the casting deck idea but it's not going to help the stability on this old Quinnie tinnie. It's not great when I stand on the seats on the water so I'm leaning towards removing the middle seat and building a floor, brining the centre of gravity lower.

How does it look structurally? I know a lot of tinnies use the middle seat for support but this seat has a thick rib running right under it and the seat is only welded to the rib on each side, not the whole way along.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks in advance!

    Welcome to fish raider Bobby.

the common spots are Gosford rail bridge, paddy’s channel, Woy Woy Raul bridge, st Hubert’s island bridge, the rip bridge, half tide rocks, lobster beach and box head.

Woy Woy bay fishes as well as the rest of the system and can be good when it’s windy as it’s quite protected. There’s a small beach at horsfield bay which is good for a swim this time of year when it’s hot. There is also a 4 knot zone around parks bay and some flats and drop offs which are good lure fishing territory on a rising tide.

also have a look at Lintern channel near Davistown and Saratoga for crabs this time of year.

Best of luck and I look forward to some of your reports.

Thanks so much mate! Heaps to take on there!

I'll give all these spots a go. I'll need to invest in a fish finder asap so I can find some nice holes too.

  3. Hey guys,

Hoping someone can give me some pointers!

I just bought my first boat, a 12ft tinnie. Keen to get in to some fishing around Brisbane Water. I'm not that experienced fishing Australian waters/salt water.. I've been living in Africa the last 4 years fishing freshwater.

Anyone have advice for some spots? I've heard around the rip bridge between woy woy and woy woy bay is good.

Has anyone fished inside woy woy bay / horsfield bay / phegans bay in a boat?

Any good spots for lure fishing?

    Happy to catch anything really!

    Thanks in advance

If its a quinnie i doubt very much that it was manufactured by Telwater- they are the holding company that own Quintrex, Stacer etc and only came into existance in the 1990's (i think)- that boat is 1970's vintage- it might be a Quinnie but i seem to remember that they never had that wide strake on the upper hull- happy to be proven wrong though

Definitely a Quintrex. It's got the original plate still inside with "Quintrex Aluminium Boats" on it and above that it has max hp, and a serial number. There is a section for MTH - YEAR but unfortunately that's not stamped

  5. Just trying to decide what to do with them when I vinyl wrap it...

I'll leave them on or re-fit, but I don't know if it'll be a mission to line rivet holes back up.. I used to wrap boats as a job so I'll see if I can slit the vinyl and wrap around the chines. It'll be a big mission but I'll keep everyone posted on the progress!

Got paint stripper sitting on the paint atm, gonna strip it back to bare alum. Then vinyl wrap, casting decks. sounder, trolling motor and she'll be ready for a sesh!

  6. Hey guys,

I bought this tinnie a week ago. Owner didn't know what it was. Rego papers say "Telwater" but I found an old faded plate inside that says Quintrex on it. It's 12ft long.

Anyone have any idea what model it could be? Not a Sportsman.. they came in 13ft from what I could find and they also have 2 ridges along the hull (mine has 1) as well as the deep V concaved hull at the front.

I'm pretty sure those spray chines at the front of the hull are aftermarket fitted as they're riveted on.

    Any input appreciated!

Hey @Bobby.V just wondering if you have had a chance to take her out on the water and how she performed with the 9.9hp.  That input would go a long way toward your decision I think.

    Cheers Z

The 9.9hp was very surprising! Got up on plane in a matter of seconds and just glided across the water beautifully.

Didn't really notice the chines doing much.. although the water was quite calm when I took it out so they might do more in choppy weather

Depends if you like gettin wet from spray when travelling cross wind  theyre there for a reason  not looks

Cool thanks everyone. I'll remove them for the paint/wrap then re-attach

Hey @Bobby.V have you taken her out on the water?  You may be surprised what your 9.9hp will do with a 3.7m tinnie (if correctly propped and trimmed).

For comparison, I have a 15hp Aux on my 6.3m heavy fiberglass boat (with a  2500kg payload) and it will push me along at 10km/h.  You may be pleasantly surprised what the 9.9hp will do with your 3.7m tinnie (2-300kg payload).

I see that chine providing 3 functions -

    i. given the T profile it would significantly strengthen/stiffed that part of the hull

ii. it would act as a chine - providing additional lift

    iii. it would deflect spray

What ever you decide to do, I'd recommend it stays or is refitted after you wrap.

    Cheers Z

Nope haven't even taken her out yet. Got it yesterday. I'll take it for a spin this afternoon

    Whats the boat anyway??

    Looks like a Quintrex sportsman?

Not sure what it is. Rego papers just say Telwater but obviously they own 8 brands under them including Quintrex, Stacer, Savage.

It looks a little different to the Quintrex Sportsman. That has 2 ridges running alont the hull and mine only has 1.

Anyone have any idea what It could be?

Its a spray chine to deflect water away from hull

Okay cool. Is it necessary? Does it make a big difference? I've only got a 9.9hp on it so the boat won't be hammering along..

It's right in the way of the plans I have to paint and vinyl wrap the sides of the boat.. I'm considering removing it and plugging the holes with aluminium brazing rods..

  10. Hey guys,

Just bought my first boat. It's a pre-loved 3.7m tinnie.

It's painted with house paint so I'm going to strip it back to bare metal and repaint but I am not sure what this bar is? Can anyone shed some light? Haven't seen it on any other boats...

It's riveted in to the hull. Pics below.

    Thanks in advance

  11. Hey guys,

Hoping for a bit of advice. I'm new to fishing salt water.. I've lived in Africa for the last 5 years and fished only freshwater. I'm aussie originally but didn't really fish before that since I was a kid so back to square one really.

I'm based on the lower central coast near ettalong/woy woy. I've had a few flicks (land based) but no luck.

Does rain affect salt water fishing? Is this time of a year a good time for fishing? Best bait/lures atm for flatties?

    Cheers guys any help appreciated

There were huge schools of caves beach an moon island last week...i could see them from highway near catho

Cheers Rick looks like I'll be planning a trip up your way!

Do you know if they'll start moving south to Umina/Ettalong in the coming weeks or have they already moved north from here?

In my case Killcare, Macmasters, Pearl Beach and Copa are where Ive been fishing.

I haven't been doing too bad off the beach for winter, but no salmon.

Not too far from me. Guess I'll have to head up north a bit to get in to the salmon then!

Should they be arriving this area soon at this time of the year, or have they just departed? I'm not familiar with their seasonal movements.

What have you had luck with off the beach? I'm completely new to beach fishing. Been living in Africa for the last 4 years and doing all freshwater bass fishing so this is all very new to me! Just got back a month ago

    Thanks for the info Rick

FWIW, I fish the beaches on the southern end of the Central Coast a couple of times a week and haven't caught a salmon, haven't seen one caught, and haven't even seen one in the water for a couple of months now.

I think  I'll be coming up to your end and giving them a shot tomorrow.

Would by the Magenta Resort be a good place to go ?

Only just saw your reply to Rick after I posted mine.  When you say southern end of central coast do you mean umina/ettalong? That's where I've been having a go but no luck

  15. Thanks for the tips Rick, much appreciated.

Have you ever fished Umina Beach / Ettalong for salmon? Do you know if they're around that area at the moment?

I threw a few metal 30g "pilchard" lures in to the surf this morning at umina beach but the swell was huge and the rain picked up so gave up after 20mins, no interest in the lure

  16. I've scoured the internet for definitive info but there's a lot of mixed info out there on Salmon fishing. Wondering if some experienced anglers can chime in as I'm new to salmon fishing and haven't managed to catch anything yet. I'm based on NSW Central Coast, 1hr north of Sydney.

Best time of year for salmon?

Best time of day to target?

Best lure/s and most effective time to use it vs bait?

    Best bait/s for salmon?

Best conditions? ie. big surf swell vs calm waters

Thanks guys, all info appreciated and hopefully I can land one soon!
