  1. Thanks Jon. Do you have any drawing of how the electrics would work? This is the bit I am struggling with. Positive and negative wires from bilge to fuse to on/off switch to battery?
  2. Thanks a lot guys. To answer your questions. Dave - single battery system. I have a dashboard yes but was leaning towards just incorporating a switch near the battery rather than a dash. Obviously this won’t be as good as having it dash mounted though but that’s ok. Raging - I was going to get a rule 500gph bilge pump. Or 750. The comments re Johnson pumps on this forum seem to suggest they give up a bit too early. I’ve seen a lot of people say add a fuse. Dumb qn but how do I do this (I’ve never done any electrics before so I’m just having a crack) jon - enough for a days fishing roughly. So a dozen tanka’s, slimes, squid etc. I was going to use a 60l plastic barrel 3/4 full. The bilge pump will pump fresh water into the barrel and the overflow outlets will take out the old water. That’s my plan xheers for your help
  3. Hi all. I have read all topics on this and there is too much info so just a quick qn. I am building my own bait tank that is removable from the boat each time (it’s not my boat) and my question to you is should I get a separate battery for the tank (say a small 12v battery) or should I connect it to the boats battery? We have a 4.5m poly with single battery setup. Also does anyone know a good solution for incorporating an on/off switch into the electrics for the live bait tank so that I can switch it on/off whenever I want without having to disconnect from battery. Thnks a lot
  4. Thanks a lot. Is it just me or does this mount look like it will have the downrigger pointing to the sky? My rod holders in our poly craft are vertical hence I need a vertical steel pipe and a horizontal mounting plate I think. I bought a hookem 30 degree mount and it doesn’t work unfortunately because of the angle. Also so if you don’t have pins in the bottom of the rod holders (I don’t think the polys do) will a rod holder mounted downrigger just spin around as I’m trolling?
  5. sorry just starting this up again. I have a Scotty 1085 downrigger and have a vertical rod holder that i want to mount it in. In the couple of posts above, where can i find the vertical rod holder mounts please? many thanks
  6. Quick question for those out there. 1) when trying to catch squid in Pittwater am I best to choose an area and try multiple different squid jigs. Or have a couple of squid jigs and try multiple different areas? Any tips for areas in Pittwater that are worth a shot. And any rules for colours/size of jig for Pittwater? 2) when casting soft plastics (I’m using the white/pearl 6” plastic) for kings do I retrieve as quick as possible? Or say wind 5 times then let it sink again? Or wind slowly and steadily back? I had a few rats follow it in on the weekend but couldn’t convince them to eat it! thnaks
  7. Cool thanks. Lots of really good tips here thanks guys. Lastly any view on trolling speed?
  8. When you say is out rod holder plastic do you mean the one built into the boat hull? We have a polycraf so it is all the one mould
  9. Thanks so much guys. A couple of follow ups. I’ve read a lot about braid over wire. Is it really worth it? The guy at the shop didn’t carry the braid and said not many people requested it so wasn’t convinced. Whne you say you throw the livey 5-6m out the back of the boat and attach to release clip is this to say your live squid is travelling about 5m behind the bomb? and lastly when you say you attach a raider to the bomb how do you do this without it tangling with the release clip or line? Is it worth having a teaser down with the livey? thanks so much everyone. Anyone else with yips please feel free.
  10. Hi all, Ive just gotten myself a Scotty 1085 downrigger and a Hookem rod holder mount. I hope to take it all out for a spin sometime over the next few weeks. Problem is i have only used a downrigger once before. I understand the basics but need as much help as possible on all the little details. Things like, how far should i run the live bait (i plan on downrigging squid or yakkas if possible) behind the DR bomb? Can i use an overhead reel in the scotty rod holder which is attached to the boom? Do i free spool my reel as i am letting down the bomb? What speed should i troll at? I only have the one DR but some people have talked about attaching flashers to the DR. Does anyone have experience doing this? is it worth it? Basically any tips anyone has would be hugely appreciated? Thanks so much in advance
  11. Hi all. I’ve read a few forum posts on this but was hoping I could get a few other views. I am looking at getting a Downrigger for fishing for kings in Pittwater and close offshore. We will be doing it out of a polycraft 4.5m boat. I am looking at a manual one and something that is portable. Any thoughts on my best options? Thanks
