  1. On behalf of all the big flathead of Tuross, I say it's about time you left the area! :yahoo:

Going to miss your amazing exploits with Dene and the occasional family member Skip. I never tired of your reports and the great photos. Looking forward to seeing your first Mexican report. Good luck with the move.

    Cheers

  2. No.1 choice - Pink squid skirts.

I use 10-12cm skirts for salmon, bonito and tailor and 12-15cm for kings.

It's just about all that I use now. They catch almost anything.

No. 2 choice - hardbodies like this in grey or dark blue (pilchard colours) about 12cm long

This old lure is almost transparent, but the tailor still go for it.

  3. I caught a 40cm bonito on one of those light 6 hook bait rigs while fishing for herring off the breakwall at SWR.

I also managed a 1m gummy on 6lb mono off South Cronulla years ago. It took about 20min to get to the boat.

  4. Here is an old FR report about big and record tailor.

    "In Praise of Tailor"

As for the fish length and weight data table, it says a tailor with a fork length of 66cm would weigh about 4.2kg.

The biggest (Australian record) tailor I could find was caught in Shark Bay WA in 1981 and was 12.1kg.

  5. Some quality fish caught in difficult conditions Skip.

Love the big EP. Couple of top flatties too (as usual)! Great pattern on Dene's flathead.

Good luck over Easter Skip. Hope you get a few when your son arrives.

    Cheers

  6. First time heard green toads in sea. Didn't know that there are saltwater frogs in Australia. Are they poisonous?

Here's a picture of the line snipping little ba@tards.

They can cut through 80lb braid like it was cotton.

At least leatherjackets are good to eat. Green toads just cost me a fortune in lead and braid, and raise my blood pressure!

  7. Trolled out of the Hacking around Jibbon bommie a dozen times for just a couple of tailor. Headed south along the Royal National Park nearly as far as Garie for nothing. Trolled back north a bit wider off the cliffs again for zip.

Stopped for a while near Marley hoping to get a few flathead on the drift. Managed a couple before the !@#!#! green toads arrived. They killed us! They followed us everywhere we stopped north and south, shallow and deep. We lost a lot of gear. Sick of it, we headed back to Bate Bay and fished off Cronulla and Wanda for a couple of hours, but the baits were hardly touched.

  8. I've mentioned this before in a couple of posts, but a couple of years ago we crossed behind a trawler leaving Bate Bay and headind south around dawn. In his wake was a trail of dead fish - mainly small whiting, flathead, and bream. It was one of the saddest sights I'd ever seen off Cronulla. I've since been told by locals that they've seen pros working throughout the night in Bate Bay, especially around Wanda and Greenhills.

My money is on trawler bycatch.
