  1. Hi all.

Haven't posted for a while as I've been busy moving to Melbourne. I sold the boat in Sydney so only kayaks and shore based from low on. Any tips on spots and species here in Melbourne? Much appreciated.

    Tight lines all.

For sure get it mate if you have had it before. The shot works. One of the best things I did getting it. I actually had mine when it was released just after trial stages and was told "it may, it may not work" but since then its been proven to work. There for me is Victoria central. Is that going to be your destination?

No we're heading for Tassie.  Sick and tired of the big smoke.  Need to get out.

Nice healthy looking fish mate. Top eating that size.

Pneumonia sucks, had it twice, once double Pneumonia. Like being stabbed each breath. Also used to get pleuricy, nearly every winter. But after I got the Pnuemo Vac shot I have never had either since. Worth getting that if you are susceptible. I was/am as I get asthma.

Thanks for the advice. I'll definitely look into it as it's the third time in my life I've had it.

On a different note, are you TAZ because you're from there? We're moving there at the end of the year.

  4. Always see someone standing on the Rhodes boat ramp so decided to have a quick flick today before the school run. I've had pneumonia for the last month so desperately needed to wet a line.

Blade got snagged under the railway bridge and I lost it. Tied on an Aldi prawn on a weedless hook hoping it won't get snagged. First cast this 54cm lizard either followed it in or took it right next to the jetty. Not a single bite for another hour.

Lots of bird action upstream from the bridge and with all last week's rain I take it it's Taylor chasing bait fish. They never came within casting distance though. Walked to the park on the corner hoping I could cast to them without getting fined but by that time they had moved up Homebush bay.

Fun hour before the school run.

  5. Haven't used on here yet but used one of these https://aquacat.co.za/ in South Africa before.

    Few things I found.

Depending on where you are, deeper water is like a desert with no fish there. Fish gather near the shore because the breaking waves dig up creatures that feed bigger creatures and so on till you get to the big fish we fish for. Often while casting I caught more than buddies using the boat to take bait into deeper water.

If you're not fishing from your ute it's too big and bulky to carry far. With all the batteries, remotes etc. you're pretty much limited to a small patch of beach.

The range is never near what they advertise and I've heard of quite a few guys in South Africa that lost their boat due to it going out of range or batteries running out. It's a lot of money to lose to the ocean if it doesn't wash up on the shore which often it doesn't.

In my opinion after using one a few times it's not worth it. It seems like a bit of a toy and doesn't guarantee better catches.

Oh and now Im jealous (not really)

I headed out to bellambi this morning and it was flat. Every boat around us was hooking up to Reds, but my brother started feeling ill, so we left.

An old trawler captain once told me "first you think you're going to die and then you wish you would die" and it's 100% correct. Happens to everyone at least once and I wouldn't wish it upon anyone.

Very good advice. My mate Ralph lost his brand new phone a couple of weeks back....had it in his pocket and when climbing aboard after launch the phone went swimming !!

Another time at drummoyne ramp I almost run over a bloke snorkelling at the edge of the jetty.  He had lost his keys earlier that morning...it was mid winter 2018. He was a brave man !! Don't know if he found them

I also lost my brand new phone at Bayview a few years back. Bent over to tie up and saw a phone butterflying down into the depths. At first I thought "that's strange, where would a phone come from" and then it struck me that it's mine from my shirt pocket. Next thought was "dive after it!" which luckily I didn't or I would have lost a phone and a auto inflate life jacket. 😂

No worries.   There’s plenty more I could write but it will all fall into place.   One other thing is make sure you secure your keys and phone or whatever you have so they don’t end up in the drink.   I never get frustrated with people that get in and have a go even if they are having a few problems, the people that are just inconsiderate they are the annoying ones.

The missus tripped over a cleat on the dock and dropped her sunnies. I had to go back late that afternoon at low tide and luckily found them. 😂

I usually use the one at Kyeema if fishing the bay but there is nothing wrong with the ramp at Foreshore Drive. Be aware that plenty of cars have gone for a swim sliding in at low tide though.

Just take your time don’t feel pressured and start to develop a checklist.

If you can’t reverse practice somewhere else first.

    Be prepared before you arrive.

Stop in the prep area. Make sure the bungs are in. Tie down straps are off the back. Motor is off the travel bracket. Rope is ready depending which system you are using. Or have one of you in the boat. Leave the safety chain and winch on!

Reverse back in your lane with the boat in at the right depth that takes a bit of practice but for me the step part of the trailer mud guards are below the water and there is just s little bit of ramp at the back of the car out of the water.  Handbrake on and park or in gear.   If it’s night time ( not on your first attempt) turn your headlights off there is nothing worse than trying to reverse when other people have their headlights on.

Undo the safety chain, I’d usually have the person in the boat lower the motor and start it at this point. Or they can hold the rope if not in the boat most likely standing on the pontoon. Release the winch and give it a push off.   Don’t forget to take the winch handle back off if it’s removable.

Jump back in the car and go and park it.  Check it’s locked, nothing on display lights off. If possible the person looking after the boat should have moved it further up the pontoon or hang back out out of the way and just nudge up to it to pick you up when you arrive on the pontoon.

The fun is out on the water so don’t hang around at the ramp making a nuisance of yourself.   If you are struggling accept some help and do the same for others.

Very good boat ramp etiquette. I wish all boat owners could read this thread.

  10. Packed up the ute for a day on the beach and drove to boat harbour. Hight tide when we got there and nothing touched the bait for ages.

As the tide receded and I could walk in to cast into deep water, I got a small salmon (gut hooked and bleeding heavily so he went in the esky). Just after lunch the rod tip moved and the missus got a fiddle ray (only photo for the day sorry guys).

Later on as we packed up I left the rod for last (as you do) and as I got down to it, I noticed the line running off at an oblique angle. I took it out of the holder and set the hook. Luckily I was holding on because it took off like a small freight train. Couple of meters down the beach and a while later and to my surprise I had a +- meter bronzie on the beach. Missus came running with the pliers but forgot the camera (I might have to divorce her for that one). First bronzie I've ever caught in the daytime. Poor blighter must have been hungry. Got the little bugger in the water soonest and he swam off strong. Followed him through the breakers just to make sure.

All in all another beautiful winters day on the beach.

  11. Didn't know this section existed until Mrs Swordfish put me onto it.  Thanks for that.

I know very few Aussies eat salmon, but it's underrated. Here's just one recipe I've tried on them with amazing results.

Instead of doing the fish in the oven, I dust it in flour and coat in beaten egg then shallow fry in a pan.

You can also ad things like Chillies or pickling Spices to the pickle mix according to your tastes.

As long as all the fish is covered in pickling sauce it lasts for weeks in the fridge and goes well with a nice heavy wholewheat bread. The longer you let it pickle the better it gets. Easy lunch to take to work on a busy morning. Just grab some from the fridge and Bob's your uncle.

In Cape Town, South Africa the Cape Malay community make this dish year round but especially around Easter and Jewie is one of their favourite fish to use for it.

Hey mate, weekdays are a bit tough with work and a young family but I’d be keen for a weekend beach sesh... I’ve wanted to fish Garie for a while now! You fish that area much?

Hi Ragnar. Been there three times in the last three weeks. Beach only, not the rocks. Came away with two salmon everytime. Fished the rocks on the right one day with the missus and got a nice mixed bag. Unfortunately the only time I fish is during the week. Weekend is family time.

  13. This morning after the missus left for work me and the little one headed down to Garie Beach in the Royal National Park for some father daughter time (read: a fish and play on the beach).  First bait hit the water at about 11:00 and not long after the rod bent over and the big overhead casting reel screamed. Went 68cm.  Just after lunch I noticed a big school of fish swimming toward where my bait was and walked closer to the rod. As I got there it bent double. Didn't measure the smaller number but when I knocked the fillets off it had NINE yakkas in its belly. Big one had an empty stomach. No wonder it pulled so hard.

Got home, had fresh fish, chips and peas for dinner and turned the rest into pickled fish. Lunches sorted for the rest of the week.
