  1. Update on work done since this post:

-Service including compression test, new spark plugs, new water pump kit, gear oil change, new thermostat.

    - New prop

    - Bilge pump installed and wired

    - LED Cabin and deck lights installed and wired

    - 4 switch panel installed and wired for the above

    - new negative terminals on batteries as old ones were rusted.

    - new solar charge controller installed and wired.

So far everything seems to work (went for a nice run end of last week and it all feels tight as a drum). Hope it stays that way.

Learned a lot about my boat over the last couple of weeks and would definitely recommend boat DIY to anyone that can pick up a spanner without dropping it on their foot.

I do it all myself. Youtube is your friend for all things engine related. I'm a huge fan of Dangar Marine.

Stu is my main inspiration for the work and this post. I did it all with a beer in my hand. He will be proud. 😂

  3. I usually just switch off even though one of my two batteries has the toys on it so doesn't switch off. Never had problems until I installed a few extra toys over the last few weeks and yesterday the battery was too low to start the boat. Took it out and charged it overnight so will see how it goes now. Might have to get the multimeter on it to look if something else is draining it.

Nice work @Coswecanfly, I love anything DIY that's even a bit of a stretch for your abilities.

To me it keeps your brain active & teaches you new skills along the way which cant be a bad thing right!

I am about to do a service on my 25hp Mercury Seapro & am gathering the parts & information to do the job, that's my winter project!

I also found out something interesting during me research in that my 25hp is basically the same motor as the 30hp with the same bore & stoke etc.

The only difference is the 25hp carbs are jetted & has a different plate between the carb & motor.

It increases the rpm's but it still falls within the 25's parameters at full throttle.

There is a kit available you can get so I am considering doing the job & was going to start a thread here to see if anyone has done it themselves.

I discovered that my Johnson 70 and the Evinrude 60 are the exact same motor. I got a service kit from Outboard spares (don't know if I'm allowed to mention names?) and they had excellent service. Kit was here in a few days and everything fit perfectly.

  5. Quick survey. Who does their Outboard service themselves and who takes it to the mechanics? I've just done the service on my Johnson 70 myself for the first time and it wasn't nearly as daunting as I always thought it would be. It's just a normal motor turned on its head.

Over the last few weeks I also installed and wired a new bilge pump and lights. I don't know why I always thought boats are different to cars/bikes/trailers etc. Never thought of DIYing it like I do with everything else. Oh well.  We live and we learn.

  6. Today the missus and I dropped our little monkey at a friend's place and went fishing at Reids Flat in the royal national park. Had a lovely day until these absolute morons in surf skis came paddling past in what can only be described as a geriatric "race".

No amount of begging and pleading was enough to make them go around our lines and they just ploughed straight through them. Tangling themselves and breaking off our equipment. Big river with more than enough water to share but then they start shouting and swearing at us! Being a big boy I'm not one to stand back so I told a couple of them what I thought of them and their un-Australian manners. If I had heavier gear I might have flung a few 5 ounce sinker straight through the side of their kayaks.

Do any of you have similar experiences and what did you do? I've never experienced such blatant disregard for another river user.

  7. A friends son likes fishing but his dad not so much so today I took them out on the boat hoping to stretch his arms a bit on a kingie. Fished for livies at Balmoral but kept getting other species and only got one yakka. Wind picked up a bit and youngster started looking a bit green around the gills so went around to the red yacht past spit bridge. Gave the youngster a 4kg setup and minutes later he was on. 58 and 59 cm kingies later and the lad was beaming from ear to ear. Glad I could give him his first kingie even though they weren't keepers.

look i know  its non of my business  and im only telling you this because personally  i love presentation and i am also a bit concerned about  germs etc ,   have you ever considered a folding  wire  grill,  what you do is rub a bit of oil over it with a paper towel   place your fish in them and turn the fish over  as many times as you like without it braking up , the fish looks good at the end and if you like crispy skin  this will help allot , you can pick them up  in dollar shops , ebay and the markets for $10 , grill.webpgrill

It's a kamado mate. The lid was closed for the whole cook with a temp of 180 degrees inside. Fish was cooked to a safe internal temperature. I have a fish grid. Didn't feel like using it tonight. But thanks for the advise. 😉

  9. After a very disappointing trip to Wisemans ferry yesterday we were aching to catch some fish so took the little person and the missus out to Garie beach today. Got there at about 07:30 at fished the last two hours to high tide.  Tide was pulling right very strong so packed up the big beach rod and stuck some prawns on the 6 and 7 foot spinning rods. Not long and we were on. One dart (bait for the boat on Thursday) was followed by two nice bream (haven't measured yet but they're definitely legal) and a 42cm flattie. Packed up at 13:00 and headed home.

Just finished cleaning all the gear and now it's time to fire up the barbie. Will update with bream sizes as they go on the barbie.

  10. Anyone know if the hairtail are in Sydney / Hawkesbury yet? Anyone been catching them? I'm really keen to head over one night this year and give them a go. Need a new fish on my species list. The missus is one up on me now. 😂

  11. G'day fishos.

We're in Brisbane for the school holidays and I got a little daiwa gshock rod and reel to have some fun with and then got these on Bribie Island. Please advise on species?

Before people kick off I know there are fish with venomous spines around so I'm careful with critters that I don't know what they are (the guy next to me on the beach got a stone fish on pilchard)

    Thanks in advance.
