  1. I got a bit upset where i saw a question being asked by a young fella like myself and a response came back from an older Fella being if you gotta ask that you don't deserve to participate.

Not everyone has the chance to learn from their parents or have a mentor to help them learn things. Or simply they haven't done it before.  With all the information and communication streams available why not answer a simple question and set someone on the right path rather than shoot them down for asking.  (this happened on facebook)

Parents today are busy and I am trying to set up a lifestyle for myself which is more like what my grandfather lived. More off the land and self sufficient. This is easier to do now Because the technology allows us. I live off the Electricity Grid Produce my own meat and veggies have Dams stocked with fish for consumption.

The times are what you make them and i have great interest in how we used to do things because when the battery goes flat well I'm fishing old school.

Yes true, but then, skull dragging a Flathead up on 30lb line in 30m of water is not exactly the same, but, the fish is the same (kind of) that's why I said it's hard to really say what fights more, a decent Groper will pull a Kingfish backwards, and if Drummer grew to Groper size.........it's all relative to gear, location and circumstances, I have caught literally hundreds of Kingfish over 20kg, and they fight OK for a minute or so, but, rating a 10? nah a big Yellowfin will/can have you on your knees after an hour, no Kingfish or Flathead is going to do that.

Fish everything Light then it's all fun and every things a fight

I was down at Long Beach a while ago and got about 5-6 Squid from the shore, and it's a fait old cast out to the weed. Going out of Husky, head to Callala and try around the boats, I have got plenty there too. I have found the Bay itself is not that flash for bottom fishing, Flathead are pretty scarce (but reasonable off the beach) around the cliffs at Point Perpendicular can be fair, middle ground seems to have been taken over by divers.

I take it there's still fish to be caught in middle ground of you can find a bonby or something

Its pretty simple really. If you check out Google Earth you'll see that a southerly swell can enter the bay and run straight in around Longnose and Dart Point. Once you're in past that, unless the swell is large, you'll just get a gentle roll.

An easterly swell enters the mouth, fans out and you get the same gentle roll as mentioned above.

A northerly swell hits the north tip of Bowen Island and doesn't come into the bay at all.

The predicted 1 metre swell won't affect any of the squid grounds, or anywhere in the bay for that matter.

The only place to be wary of is Longnose Bommie as the waves can break a fair way out from the rocks when the swell is up. Also if leaving Currambene Creek in the dark for the first time, its best if you check the entrance the day before, as there's an exposed reef just offshore that isn't lit at night.

Thankyou for the information, Having only ever been into jervis bay sailing on the young endeavour nearly 20 years ago i just couldn't remember what it was like. Im looking forward to getting out there now with some confidence.

  5. Hi, So im going up to Jervis for a trip in a few weekends time. The predicted Swell is to be about 1m and 8 sec from the East at point perpendicular. How will this compare to the swell in the bay ? I know wind direction will be a factor but i mainly want to get out there and chase some squid early in the morning and do some bottom bashing I'm in a 4.3 m ally boat and ill be coming out of Currambine creek.

Any advice or tips on reading the weather in Jervis ay or generally would be much appreciated

  6. Hey, so i started out with a cheaper bass lumis setup cost me around $100 it casted superbly when you could get the brake right once i could cast that cheapy really well and with good distance i invester in something more expensive ive got a Daiwa Zata on a Good rod and it superb but i reckonbuy a cheap one and if you can work that out and get consistent with it then invest in something better. I still use my Bass Lumis for particular lures. it lives on my boat as one of my go to rods.

I was wondering how far up the Currambene Creek Have you fished is there good Fishing to be had up near where its closed to fishing and is it easy passage all the way down to Huskisson ?  Anything i should keep an eye out for ill be taking my 4.3 Fishrunner down the creek. Any recomendations on soft plastics or lures that are must haves ?

going to have to try some of these idea, I alsways just wrap the braid around my big toe which hirts when your using light braid

nothing worse than braid cuts. both work the first one is handy for keeping in my bag when im on the flats the other is for my boat

Thanks for sharing this with us. Can you show me how the improved model is used please? What are "lamb marking rings" and where do we get them? Cheers, bn

just so you can see how it works with the mainline and the leader

That guide is really good, i got sick of standing on the sand trying to keep a reel out of the sand and trying to get and maintain tention on 6 pound line while tying a 10 pound leader. you just dont have to think about anything other than making your wraps when i use my little tool.

or even worse 6 pound leader

Lamb marking rings are the little rubber rings they use to castrate and take the tails from newborn lambs, should be able to get them at a rural shop or online. the third arm keeps tension on the leader. ill take some photos when I'm out the shed next. Fit snuggly on m6 bolts. i also changed the length of the bolts to 100mm from 70mm i made it for my cousin who has quite large hands.

I found this guide to tying an FG Knot a few months back, and it is as simple as pie (after a few practice attempts).

My only modification is to not bother tying the final half-hitches past the end of the tag line. The result is a super thin, strong knot, that lasts through many more casts than my much loved  ‘Improved Albright’, that served me for the past 15 years

I have used it on leader from 20-100lb, and it has not failed me once.

    Give it a try!

    Cheers,

    Ed

Nice work, I love anything DIY

On this occasion I bought a FG tool instead of doing something like this myself.

The only thing for me with this design & the way the knot is formed is as you do your wraps the line shortens between the 2 points that are at 90 degrees of the tag which is why my Daiichi is spring loaded.

But if it works for you thats all that matters, its certainly better than trying to do it by hand which for me was a PITA.

    Hey mate

So using the rubber rings are quite soft so it allows your braid to slide through as the wraps are made. wing nuts allow you to release the pressure as you need to.
