  1. It has been a while I came back to this post. But I want to update this for future readers.

I floated prawn about 4-5m on an overcast day, during run in tide and landed 2 trevallies and 1 leather jacket.

I also casted an orange Yamashita Egi Oh Live Search out as far as I could forward from the wharf and landed two squid at 7.30am.

Yep. I've also picked up a few in the area to the left (towards the Ripples restaurant) as I'm heading out along the walkway.

People at the tip of the wharf are happy chasing fish. I'm happy fishing in all the other sections for squid.

Keep fanning out your casts. Squid move around. 15 minutes could make all the difference.

    That's awesome!

Thank you, DerekD. I will give it a try at the next opportunity. I have a good feeling it.

Hi @anthman are we playing for the million dollar question??

Between the baths and weed beds in the area there is plenty of suitable structure for squid and you will catch them there if you put the time in.  The problem is that it could be the first few casts or fifty or a hundred. I find the cuttlefish like to hang out near the netting and pylons of the baths. Just keep covering ground with your casts to find them. There are a few patches of ribbon weed in the area so you may have have to count down the jig to keep it from snagging up on the weed. Most of the people will fish off the end of the wharf for fish. I prefer to work the sides for squid.

If I understood that right, you're referring to the area on the rightmost side of the wharf before the rocks?

If so, itll make sense that I have no action squidding in the same area everyone fishes.

Dead fresh squid, cut into strips will also work.

My personal favourite that has proven super reliable is the humble yabbie. Love or dead, doesn't matter. Though I like to fish them unweighted - if kings are in the area, they will get smashed.

Great idea! Could squids be caught off the wharf? Where abouts? If not, where else nearby? I've only ever caught them in Parsley Bay or Yarra Bay, but that's too far from Clifton.

    What is the bait??

If you are targeting kings I would be floating live bait.

Salmon on the other hand if they are around will take almost anything!

I have used anywhere from prawns, pilchards, herbed chickens and yellowtail slices.

I will try live bait (whether yellowtail or squids) when I can get my hands on them next time.

Tried squidding on Saturday, off the wharf, no luck.

Speaking of which, Saturday was bonitos galore, and i was using the very bait a fellow was using (pilchards). He landed 5, i had nothing. So he gave me 1 of his.

Salmon and Bonnie's will usually be chasing surface bait, so depth should be between 2-3. I'm assuming you are using pilchards, so count the kingies out unless you are one of the luckies who get a bi-catch.

Then it all comes down to right place at right time. Float fishing is kind of like bingo, you'll know when your number comes up 😁

Awesome, thanks. I knew depth has something to do with it. Guess my number has yet to come.

  7. Hi Everyone,

I have been to Clifton Garden multiple times and I have caught breams and the occassional snappers here and there.

I am now after a different kind of fish: the salmons, the kingies, the bonitos etc.

I have seen those who were more successful with these kinds of fishes were all ISO float-fishers.

Although I don't have an ISO rod, I figure I could still tie a floating rig. Only issue is my bait is completely untouched. I am assuming that it comes to depth as cast distance, time-of-day and bait-type is the same. Only factors I could assume is that I have my line at roughly 4-5m deep and burley (my line is near, but not exactly in it)

I am starting to think that I am getting this all wrong. Does anyone have suggestion on depth or anything otherwise that may increase my chances?

    Thanks in advance

I've seen lots of people try squidding at Gymea baths and lilipilli baths but no hook ups. However, in the Port Hacking, theres a area from "Salmon Haul Reserve" to "Bass and Flinders Point", which alot of people go squidding on the rocks from. Everyone there last time I went, at least caught one. Also its very safe as the rocks are alot higher then the water level. Goodluck :)

I have never tried Salmon Haul and Bass Flinders Point, however, Youtube "Yamashita Sydney".

In one of the videos, Eging Master Eisuke went there 10 days ago to test their product's latest model.

I was able to deduce the location of this place by comparing the surrounding scenery in the video with Google map. And I am planning to go there this Saturday.

  9. Hi Everyone,

Just wanted to share a story of my fishing trip in Parsley Bay yesterday.

I was there between 6am to 6pm, hoping to beat my previous (unimpressive) record.

It was crowded and I am not just talking about the people on the wharf. There were Mackerels booming everywhere and not a single soul left the wharf without a fish in the morning. And yes, I beat my record with a new species (the mackerel) at 33cm (see? unimpressive record).

In previous trips, I would bring my earphones and listen to my music, only taking it off when someone calls to me. However, yesterday I felt like putting it away and just be in the moment; listen to the waves crash, listen to the excitement of those landing a fish, but more importantly, listening to their stories.

I had a lot of opportunity to speak with everyone whether they came before or after. I can even "feel" the passion and the fondest memories people have had over the years in their fishing journey.

It was not until, I think 2pm when a gentlemen and his wife came down and spoke with us, was the highlight. They have had decades in their fishing diaries and such a rich history in Parsley Bay. They spoke of schools of bonitos, five years ago, so immense that they pushed the swimming nets back. They spoke of the largest fish they caught and what it took to catch it. They spoke of his huge stock of fishing equipment. Interestingly, what stood out, was how a fellow neighbour simple handed all his fishing gear to them because of their passion.

As a retired school teacher, he gladly taught me many techniques, fishing spots, baits, rigs etc. He listened to my stories which surprisingly mirrored his younger days. He even dove into the water to look for my lost squid jig.

Before he left, he asked me something that still amazes me even to this moment of writing, "Jackey, are you interested in a surf rod?".

I respectfully declined and said there must be others more deserving of the rod than a stranger like myself. But he stopped me and said, "I see that you are passionate and you seem to care about your gear; so I want to give this to you".

He went home and came back with a practically new and beautiful surf rod, with a "Merry Christmas".

So wherever you are, I want to say; Thank you, Albert. I will look after this rod as you have and hope to someday also hand it down to another passionate kid.

  10. That's amazing information. Thank you very much.

    Today's the day!!

We have decided to go to The Entrance. We are aiming to get there at about 10pm or 11pm.

I think my memory says it's The Entrance Rd? Can someone confirm if that's the right place?

Any other useful tips will be awesome.

  11. That's unfortunate, I hope you land a few keepers as well.

Hmm, times really have changed. Land based fishing is not as giving as they used to be too.

I wouldn't want their first time to be a bust especially after a productive foraging session a couple of weeks back.

Do you have any other places/areas that may be more promsing?

  12. Thank you Everyone for the support.

From memory, we went to a spot in front of a parking lot, and we stood in waist deep water. I was thinking that since it has been maybe 10 years, there would be new prime spots.

And yeah, anywhere closer to Sydney would also be awesome.

Given our availability, we might do December 24th with one group and then January 31st with the other.

  13. It has been years since I have gone prawning in The Entrance.

I have deeply fond memories of walking out onto the water and scooping up a nice batch of prawns.

I have managed to convince my missus and a group of friends on, what-will-be, their first ever prawning experience.

I am hoping to get guidance on when would be a good time and place to go.

We are considering January 31st due to people's availability and February 5th's new moon.
