  1. Thanks everyone! It's always really interesting to see the different little tricks each and everyone of you have that all work out in the end!

Ok Ok .... now you've taken me down memory lane back to my youth.... circa 1980. Not only did I remember how I used to do it, but I actually had a look in my beach fishing bag and there they were tucked in the corner !!! So....

Vehicle: Holden Gemini Sedan --- four on the floor and so many places to go !

Passion: Beach fishing, hand spear fishing ... ie lots of long things to carry.

Here's my solution ... two bits of venetian blind cord and two hooks fashioned from a repurposed coat- hanger.

    image.png.f89ca8c52e865c6052cc800e92b3f020.png

Fit the hooks around the hand grips above the car doors and suspend your rods out of the way...adjust the height to suit. Wrap a T-shirt or hand towel around the reels to stop them banging on the window glass.

Here's a picture of an 11ft beachrod in my wifes Subaru hatch ..... sh*t these puppies still work !

    Cheers Zoran

Gotta say this takes the cake just because of how cute the set up is!

BTW have you got photos of the signs?

nah mate soz i dont have any photos of the sign.

from recollection the sign is placed at where the white star is. its just a small white metal sign that says 'no fishing beyond this point'

do pop a message here if you ever do find out if its legal! I'm really curious about it as well😂

There is definitely a No Fishing Beyond this Point Sign there. The fish at your own risk sign is for those

wishing to fish the rocks and breakwall in front of the carpark I presume.

    ah thanks mate~

just wanted to double check with the community before i tried to do anything stupid😅

    cheers

  4. Hey guys, just wondering if anybody knows if its legal to fish on the rocks near to the bridge at foreshore ramp? Much like how this guy did at 4:20 on the video below.

There's a 'no fishing beyond this point' sign right next to a 'fish at your own risk' on the breakwall, just wondering if anybody has fished around the bridge!

    Hey Joel

My kids have caught heaps of fish on cheap combos. My daughter was gutted when I broke her pink rod when I got impatient trying to get a soft plastic off a snag.

    From my experience the two most important things are;

    1) Don't let the reel get immersed in salt water ... it will seize up real quick

    2) Replace the line with a reasonable quality mono. The cheap line combos come with will be crap in terms of memory and breaking strain. If you have already had a few tangles and have cut line off you will need to replace it anyway ... your casting distance will be diminishing as there is more friction as the line comes off the reel during a cast. There is heaps off stuff on youtube that shows how to replace line on a reel.

Hope that helps and good luck with it.

cheers bud! yeap got a new line set up:) had a quiet day by the waters just practicing casting and all!

    slowly but surely getting there~

What sort of reel is it? if it's a threadline and you got a "birds nest" it's because the line was put on with a bad twist, or the line is too thick. If it's a baitcaster, then the lure/sinker weight needs to be right to suit the rod/reel/line.

hey noelm, yeah its a threadline! it was working fine the previous time, i guess i just got overwhelmed by the winds and basically tried to do too many things at once while getting whipped in the face with my jacket 😅 rookie move.

Personally I would rather go and buy larger sinkers than put more than one sinker on a line.

Yep, sinkers would cost a couple of dollars at best.

thanks guys! ill pop by a tackle shop next time or something

Hey joel do you mean straight to hook or to swivel? Also what combo did u end up getting?

Either straight to hook or to swivel mostly will work but larger single sinkers would be better

    haha hey bud:)

ended up just getting a simple kmart combo for now, just to get the hang of things before i go up the ladder!

oh whoops, i meant to a swivel! my line literally got blown into birds nests multiple times from the wind while trying to cast😪 was thinking that a heavier weight might help with the line being a little more taut but i only have smaller sinkers!

  9. Cheers for the prompt replies everyone! Much appreciated:)

Hello joel, depending on what it is that you catch some species like tailor salmon trevally kingie bonito etc you need to bleed and let blood leave the fish for a few minutes then chuck on ice until the end of the day/night then fillet and de gut then back on ice and take home...thats just what i do....or flattys bream etc that dont need bleeding just chuck straight on ice or into bucket of water then fillet and de gut scale etc when i get home or after the fishings over.

And yes the fish would hold up in if its on ice or just in a bucket of sea water especially in winter...

I would normally bleed a fish by cutting in behind its gills into the brain then hold its tail and jiggle it around in the water for a minute or two then into a bucket of water or on ice then degut scale fillet later

When i catch a fish i like to quickly do what i gotta do with it then keep fishing and fillet scale degut etc at the end of the trip at the wharf or at home

What dirvin said is true as well

    Hope that helps

also special shoutout to you JAKSShark. You've been an absolute angel always taking time to type out these long detailed posts for all of my questions in the forum thus far. Absolute legend. Drinks on me if we ever cross paths by the water

  10. Hey guys,

Just a newbie back to the forum to ask for everyones expertise. Forgive me if it might sound like a pleb question 😅, just tryna figure out my way around things. Was wondering what was the best plan of action after catching a legal sized fish for keeps.

I've been trying to do as much research as i can on the web but theres just so many different methods so I thought I'd ask everyone here what they would do!

So say I caught a fish by one of the piers along port hacking, I want to keep it, but I still want to continue catching fish for a couple more hours and have to drive home after.

    Do you recommend:

    a) introduce the fish into an ice slurry / ice in esky straight away

    b) just pop the fish into an empty esky and hope it lasts till i get home to fillet it

    c) blunt force / stab brain to kill and store

    d) option c + bleed it out right there and then (if so, where do you normally bleed it into along a riverbed/pier)

    e) options c & d followed by filleting on the spot

Would a fish hold up for a couple of hours without removing its innards till i get home to fillet it?

Soz that was abit of word vomit but my brain has literally been going everywhere to figure this out! Hoping to get some great advice from all of you legends who have been doing this a long time.

Everyone is a beginner at some time, are you land based? I usually advise new comers to try to fish for a single available species, like (say) Flathead, look for places Flathead live and use what they eat for bait, or suitable lures, just buying a frozen packet of Prawns and wandering down to the water with a kilo sinker, 30lb line and hurling it out over the horizon might fluke a fish now and then, but, fishing right is half the battle. Common species (depending on season) will be Whiting, Bream, Flathead, Tailor and so on, fishing for Tailor is a lot different that (say) Whiting, so that's why I suggest to "specialise" (in my opinion)

Yeah definitely landbased! Thanks for the advice! Will try and work my way around the area and figure out the best spot to learn!

    Hi Joel

    Welcome to Fishraider.

I too also cut my teeth fishing botany land based, there are a few spots you can try.

Along the front of Sandringham Beach, just south of the baths cast out as far as you can to the drop off and there are usually flathead, bream and trevally about.

    image.thumb.png.d3440b54d8572c9a69bf4663f2fe8f27.png

You can also give San Souci a try north of the baths - this spot is best fished when the tide is not running too hard as the tide can carry the baits along with the current. You can get trevally and bream there too.

You can also fish anywhere between the rock walls all the way from Dolls Point to Brighton Le Sands for bream and flathead.

    image.thumb.png.3da7497cd1eeba1e385c778efa9cb42c.png

Another spot you can try is Yarra Bay - Yarra Point, go out to the end and cast towards the drop off. I think this is also pretty close to where the artificial reef is located ( not that you will be able to cast out that far).

Goodluck and be sure to post up some reports

This is so dang comprehensive! THANKS SO SO MUCH!!! it must have taken you ages to type this out! Time to try them all out in the near future! Man, its so encouraging to see such a responsive and generous community of fishers out here:) Hopefully soon enough you'll see more post from me with fish in hand!

Yeh that should be fine, i would look at a 2-5kg rod with a 3000 reel...put some 8pound j braid on it and that would be a good all round combo...but i would go to your local a shop shop and see what deals they have happening, they have plenty of rods for cheap that are good quality, i would also buy one of the tackle boxes with gear included in it (a 500peice tackle box) these are not overly expensive islf you buy that then you have to buy some 8 pound flurocarbon leader as well...then i would learn double uni and uni knot...then the simplest rig to use is= (cut 70cm of leader from your flurocarbon leader/ a double uni knot attaching braid to leader/ thread a small to medium ball sinker onto this leader so that it freely slides up and down/ get a small hook and using the uni knot tie this onto your leader do the sinker slide up and down to the hook) do you understand this? This is how i started and it is fairly easy.... buy a bag of prawns from the servo for bait and pull the head off and peel off the skin from the outside so its nice and soft and cut the prawn into peices just bigger than you hook (so you get more out of the prawns) insert the hook and your good to go make sure the barb on the hook is hidden in the bait, go to any wharf in sydney harbour and you should catch some fish best are balmoral, clifton, rose bay, anywhere around harbour bridge...but pretty much any wharf you should catch something

    Hope this helps

Not gonna lie I only have a rough idea of whatever you said thanks to scrolling through google the past couple of days :') Thank you so so much for taking time out to offer your advice, youre a legend! Can't wait to get out and try my hand at it all too soon! Maybe one of these days you'll see some of my posts up on this site!

Welcome joel, im sure someone around sydney area would be able to give you a few lessons, mentor, guide you etc.

    What gear do you have?

    Hi JAKSShark!

I basically haven't gotten round to getting anything yet! Still doing up some homework on where I should be headed towards! Honestly considering a basic kmart set-up just as a base point to get into the sport before going any further! Do you think that's a good starting point for someone who has zero experience whatsoever?

  14. Hi everyone!

Joel here, pretty much completely experience-less in the realm of fishing. I'm an international student from Singapore thats currently doing a medical degree here in Sydney.

Having grown up in a metropolitan city back home in Singapore, I never really got the chance to try out fishing! After being here for awhile, I've never gotten sick of the coastal environments surrounding NSW and constantly come across people who are fishing when I'm out for a drive/walk/road trip. I'm also really interested in cooking and farm-to-table stuff and thought fishing might be a good activity to pick up! All the more when I get to run away from studying for awhile.

I've never actually gone fishing before but have done a little bit of crabbing back in Perth where I used to visit my siblings. Would be nice if someone here could actually guide or give me a TLDR on the basic do's and don'ts of the sport! I'm based in the eastern subs and would be immensely grateful for some advice on the best places for beginners to pick up land fishing!

Looking forward to hearing from everyone:)
