  1. Really appreciate your time on Sunday. And yes, the plan is to grab the 3-10lb with 4lb braid. Will search spool backing on this and check with the guy in the tackle shop. Thanks for the tips!
  2. 120% agree. I just opened a journey that will continuously lighten me in the next decades. We didn't get any fish on Sunday but it was so much fun! The more then I learn about how to tackle different fish, the moment when I succeed, the reward is magnificent. Never heard of fly fishing in saltwater though, I watched videos about fly fishing and it is so cool!
  3. TLDR: big kudos to @DerekD for his generous Lure101 lesson! Context: I came across Fishraider forum, posted my first ask-for-help topic as I am new to fishing. Great conversations in the chats and lots of helpful advices. Then Derek is very kind to meet and show me about lure fishing. And we met, which is today! Arrived at the spot in the early morning, brief intro, we jumped staright into the topic. Starting with my ugly casting using my 9ft "beginner" gear recommended by my experienced friend (who also came today as well), trying my best to cast as far as I can with 30lb braid. We all know how import casting it is, and we spent decent amount of time on that. Derek pointed out the uncomfortable things I have, showing us how, explaining to us why, demonstrating to us that we can. A few hours later, I was very confident of casting. Then Derek, showed us different outfits, from the lighter, to the heavier ones, the difference among them, when we used them and why we used them. Different lures (I can tell from those lures by their looks and pictured how many fish they have lured), and most importantly, the techniques of lure fishing. It is indeed, has to be in-person, when you can see it, feel it and practice with it, then you reliaze, withthin these few hours, you have gained so much experience that Derek has been through thourghout his journey. Really appreciate that! Such a beautiful day! I am now browersing tackle shops and can't wait to gear up and have another one with Derek.
  4. Thanks LF. Great advice! I truely learn a lot! Can't wait to apply this in the weekend!
  5. @DerekD Wow. Great shoots! Guess the trick is to make the lure swim as 'real' as possible. Do we connect braid and leader straightaway or use swivels? Other things might be, how to know if there is fish underneath and we might be able to catch! I live near Macquarie Uni and happy to travel somewhere if you happen to be nearby. I usually have some time on weekend to escape from babysitting
  6. Haha I got the same worry about whether that would break the rod (Instructions always have a meaning). I bought a few 20g metal perhaps that's a bit too heavy to start with.
  7. The rod indicates about line weight and lure weight, I guess risk of using heavier lure could potentially breaks the rod or? thought you mentions you used a better quality braid, I don't think there would be an issue of casting but just worry about the rod. Open for more opinions
  8. Nice! Who doesn't like to fish with others when there are spots!
  9. Does the bigger sinker just play a role of how fast the line is going to drop here? Or the fish can actually "see" it Looks like I need to get rid of my size 4,5,6 sinkers
  10. Going to pay a visit to the Ancon**** shop this weekend. I also bought a $2.75 hand lines from K**** and caught a few yellow tails from the wharf. So much fun. Cheers
  11. LOL. I can't really tell the difference between 1-3kg and 2-4kg rod cos I don't have any of these yet! But question is, does rod get broken when catching big ones? Curious on your catching the king with 1-3kg rod! I might just do as you do, I bought plenty of 20g metal jigs and plan to cast them from shore 🤣
  12. LOL Love the conversations. The best experience is never on the book but from experienced people!
  13. This is so true. I barely see fish in the water through my eyes but apparently they are all there! I am also confused about sinking all the way to the bottom using larger sinker, as I thought some fish enjoying staying at the bottom. I used to catch a few baby snapper in the harbour areas putting my pilchards to the bottom. Can't wait for this weekend to throw some plastics for flatheads!
  14. Thanks for the sharing! Lots of tips and congrats on catching that milestone bream using lure! :beam-swimming
  15. Hey @DerekDThat was such a great article! My budget is between 100-300 for rod and reel. I am thinking about starting with $99 quickfire as @Little_Flattymentioned earlier then upgrade once I get my hands on it. Or grab a nice gear and use it for years.
  16. OMG you were not there when I was fishing but that's exactly what you said! Easy location: blue point reserve, milson s point Middle of the day, packets of pilchards, big sinkers, 30lb & 50lb line LOL
  17. Thanks for sharing the links LF. The $99 sounds like a great starting kit, definitely will have a look. I went for large lines targeting bigger fish, apparently it is not what I thought at the beginning. Then I looked back and decide to start with basic tactics, ultimate goal would be to catch kings.
  18. I believe these are the species I can find in the harbour areas. Great advice Thanks bn!
  19. Hi All, I am recently into fishing. I bought a Shimano Sedona surf combo and used that for bait fishing. Sick of smell, barely caught anything, and would like to start trying lures. My sedona seems to be overfitting: 9ft surf rod with 6000 reel. I would like to buy a lighter gear. Whats recommended?i only know Shimano. Spin reel or baitcaster reel? I am fishing in sydney harbour area. Any expert is welcome.
  20. Great article. Thanks for sharing! I am really into the lure fishing these days, browsing to get my lure gear
