  1. Okay, after catching these couple of Mahi Mahi with Gerry and Karl on the weekend, I'm interested to know how big they really get. I reckon the fish Karl caught would have weighed in the high 30kg bracket as Karl is no ballerina and he was struggling to hold this monster up to be photographed. I'm asking this question because when we retuned to the Marina and were talking to some other game fisherman that we caught a Dollie that would have been in the high 30's, we were rubbished. One bloke said, bullshit, has it been eating snapper leads.

  2. Mate of mine drifts through the moored boats with squid jigs and pilchards rigged up on the metal squid spike things and picks up squid it is also worth putting a 4/0 hook on the bait as well as he often gets small kings eat his pillies

Is that around Avalon Sailing Club ??

  3. Where would be the nearest/best/most secure place to launch my boat when coming from the Shire?

Hoping to make it if I can persuade my crew to come. Will confirm one way or the other later.

    Sounds like a great event.

    Cheers

    Paikea

Don't forget that there is a ramp at Akuna Bay which has plenty of parking. You're then only a very, very short distance to Cowan Creek and Jerusalem Bay. There is a $11.00 fee for entering the National Park which includes the parking.

    wouldn't buy again

Hmmm. Okay, do you want to sell your unit ?????

  5. Why not have a go and do it yourself. Is it only the gelcoat that is damaged or has the fibreglass been damaged as well?

I have just (last week) started doing a few little gelcoat repairs myself. If you know a nice friendly Smash Repairer he can assist you with tinting the gelcoat. All depends if the Smash Repairer has the latest and greatest paint colour matching system. He can photograph a section of the boat (I used a small rope locker lid) to assist to match the colour. They can also use a colour card system. I bought a small 250 ml tin from Whitworths ($12.95) and we tinted it as though it was 250 two-pack white base used for cars. As we were matching a white gelcoat there was not much tinter to be used. Anyway, we found that the pigment in the white gelcoat is no where near as dense as the car paint and the colour was much darker than we expected. I went and bought another 250ml tin and tinted it as though it was a 50ml tint and the colour is just about perfect.

I used very small scales and measured out 5mls of the gelcoat and added only 3 drops of the catalyst. You get about ten minutes to play with it before it gels off.

After is sets hard, you can sand it down with wet and dry sand paper to a smooth finish and then finish it off with a good quality rubbing compound. Remember, gelcoat is quite thick unlike car paint and you can sand till you hearts content.

    Hope this helps.

  6. Thanks very much for the replies. I already have a couple of apps for the iPhone, Fishweather and Angler which I find are okay but I just wanted to see what others were using. Angler is an interesting app as it has a fish activity prediction which we have found to be pretty much on the ball so far

I'll download willyweather and have a look at that.

  7. There are many and varied weird eating habits of humans throughout the world, and, I would classify a person who likes Marlin to have a weird sense of taste as far as fish is concerned. Each to the own I guess.

A little off topic, but, I was searching the web in regards to our noisy little Cicadas that invade our neighborhood during the Christmas season and was amazed to find that they are a popular source of food/protein in many countries of the world. Having said that, If I only had a choice between Marlin and Cicadas, I reckon I'd go with the former. :)

  8. I'll second that. I consider myself a fair cook and I did the same. Ended up eating spaghetti on toast!

    Cheers scratchie!!!

And, correct me if I'm wrong, but I think we are eating the same fish. :)

  9. I was given some fresh Marlin steaks in the last couple of days and thought I would give it it's best shot, so I read up on how to cook it. It seemed as though the preferred method wasto fry it in a very hot pan with olive oil and salt and pepper and a little fresh lemon juice. And, only cook it for a couple of minutes on each side. I made a tomato, basil and lime juice salsa to go with it.

Fairdinkum, the taste and texture is just plain bloody horrible. It tasted like wet cardboard and is tough and dry as buggery.

No wonder they tag and release these critters as they're rubbish in the kitchen. :puke: With out doubt, the worst seafood I have ever ever eaten.

Edit to add... I still have two steaks left so if there is anyone out there with a tried and proven recipe, I'd like to hear about it.

  10. at the moment there fighting for the shooters because the shooters are loosing land to shoot on like the state forests. the shooters are also loosing there rights to own firearms. tougher laws are being put on shooters all the time. shooters are also constantly under fire from the press. illegal black market guns and shootings are put apon the law abiding firearm owners that do the right thing, and people think the law abiding firearm owners that do the right thing should have there firearms taken from them, they should loose a hobby they love doing.

the thing is nearly every law abiding shooter is a fisherman as well and they fight for both the sports they love to do. fisherman, just fisherman fight for themselves, then have a sook when a little piece of water is closed to fishing or the bag and size limits are increased. try being a shooter that just had all the state forests closed down, now lets close down the same amount of area to fishing. and turn the same amount of sea into NP as there is on land. then fisherman might have something to winge about but at the moment fisherman have it easy compaired to shooters.

shoorters are fisherman as well and fight for all out door related activities. fisherman fight for fishing and nothing else.

why dont you ask Robert Borsak and Robert Brown why they do what they do. instead of winge about it.

    Well said. :clapping:
