  1. thanks All for your replies and advice, Much appreciated

Justin, Picked up Baitcaster couple of weeks ago, Spooled it twice allready and have been casting in local park since.... I'm turning into a fan of the BC, but as you say got plenty of "wax on, wax off"ahead of me still.

    Cheers

  2. We fished with a charter operator and flew into Sesia up near the tip... fished down the coast as far as the Jackson River.

Our charter operator had negotiated some slightly more lenient baggage allowances but we still had a 25kg all up, nothing over 7' limit... and it was strictly enforced.

I took 2 piece rods in a single rod tube, kept my tackle to only what I really needed (and left any sinkers behind... I got them up there on the charter). Clothing was only a few pairs of jocks, 3 sets of Columbia shirts/pants (that weigh almost nothing) a light jumper and a spray jacket.

All my tackle went into lightweight tackle containers. I even packed my gear in a really light sports bag rather than suitcase.

I found that even though I cut right back on my tackle I still took 3 times more lures than I needed and overestimated a lot of the rest too.

Don't know if you're going out on your own or with a charter but the charter guys will usually let you know what to take.

    Cheers, Slinky

Yeh I'm out on a charter and theyve given me the list of stuff to bring and not... Never hurts to get a few other opinions though.. Ive decided that Changes of clothes will be the lowest priority - 1 x CHange and a spray jacket should cover it, as long as a croc doesnt westle me for my shorts I should be fine.. :1prop:

    Thanks Again mate

    Cheers

    9weeks to go!

  3. Thanks Slinky,

How did you go getting your gear up there? Did you fly into Weipa, and if so find that they were strict with the Baggage allowance?

I'm Told that sunstar have a limit of 1 x Bag thats 3 dimensions dont exceed 140cm @ 20Kg..So'I'm currently looking into sending gear up in advance via road or general Air.

ALso, What would you reccomend in terms of tackle, plastics, etc - I plan to pick up all my lead locally

    appreciate your advice

    Cheers - Toby

  4. bugger :1badmood::ranting2: .. thats thrown a spanner in the works so to speak........

is the whole wharf off limits or just sections......

may have to change to cliftons with the hordes of other fishoes as i need somewhere with a good parkland for family fun also.......

thanks for that moses... ill check with mosman council....

    cheers...steve.....

Was down there Last Thursday & the whole wharf was off limits - Its petty much a construction zone and looks like a Big project that they are doing. There was Site sheds on the outer wharf and fencing for days...

  5. Gday all,

Im heading up to Weipa in September and Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions on what gear to take.

Im on a 7 day charter fishing for everything in the Area - Esturies,Bluewater, Reef etc, wherever the action is,So I'd like to keep my options open, but without taking everything

The Airlines Limit the amount of Luggage you can take so need to keep it to a minimum.

    Cheers

    Toby

  6. A couple more for the list...

Wondering why the steering is erratic only to return to the ramp and find the ear muffs are still on from the day before. :1prop:

Having the neighbours complain about the noise last night, which turned out to be the 2 radios i left on in the boat :)

ok Robbie, Lets be honest eh?? :biggrin2:

    What about:

Thrown countless yakka's into the bait tank only to have them walk on water and jump over board ala Titanic..

Downrigger Bombs... where do we start?? Caught them on reef's? Moorings? Wound them up in a fluster too far and had them liberate their freedom...

Painted your Boat black using squid....

had a sip of a VB  only to recieve a nice wet cigg butt and a mouthful of ash... :mad3:

Spent 5mins Rigging up a Rod only to realise you missed going under the bail arm...(i am repeat offender on this)

I may, or may not have been responsible for some, or all of the above...

  7. Surfing the net i came across this freeky looking thing :1yikes: anyone know what it is (is it real)

Hey mate, Cant see any link or Pic to what your talking bout????

  8. Mate, Incredible story, incredible Fish, and landed by hand on Braid...!!!! a day later!!! is that considered to be a 12 hour + fight???

    Unbelievable.!!! :thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

Did you measure her up when you got home? how long?

  9. I got a sneaky suspicion it's illegal to gather bait anywhere from the harbour foreshore :1badmood:

First Ive heard about it, but is that what they are saying here?:

    http://www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/fisheries/closur.../sydney-harbour

    Schedule 18

Shellfish closure - Port Jackson and tributaries

    All methods

The whole of the tidal waters of Port Jackson and its tributaries, upstream of a line drawn from the northern extremity of South Head, to the southern extremity of North Head.

Conditions: This closure will only apply to the taking of all kinds of shellfish.

  10. Mariner 31,

Nice haul of fish there mate! and on 6Kg line.. wicked stuff

    well done!

P>S- WHat is the Fisheries Raft ?

Caught these at the Fisheries raft South West of Guadalcanal Island on Sunday.

Abu 7000 on GB 1706 Ugly tossing 2-3" Xmas trees.

Lots of fun on 6kg but no chance to land the larger specimens on light line.

Previous weekend had similar numbers with a few rainbow and bonito also.

Just purchased new camera so hope to supply regular shots.

    Tight lines!

  11. I cant help you with how to make your own knife jigs but I am interested in your Jiging adventure and giving it a go.

    any pointers would be appreciated

    Hey David,

IM pretty fresh to jiggin' but what seems to work is: find the fish, drop the jig down to the bottom, and as quickly and aggressively as you can, bring it up to surface.. repeat steps until your hit and hooked.

Its certainly a different experience to live baiting, and you sure feel it in your arms afterwards..

Just found this on you tube..its got great music too..

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DsgTK-fm380

    good luck

    Cheers

    Toby

  12. Hi Toby

I haven't made a full sized knife jig, but have cut lots of knives up to make regular tailor lures from them! I have made one from the actual knife blade & another from the handle. Caught fish from both! Use the grinder to put an angle on the hole you have drilled (keep dunking it in water to cool) - otherwise it is very difficult to get the split rings thru the hole as the handle end is so thick - or the split rings distort.

There is no reason why a full sized knife would not work - the originals would have been just that - someone toying with a knife!

Have fun, & wear goggles when using the bench grinder!

    Cheerio

    Roberta

Likewise with spoons & teaspoons - smaller sized lures & 'spoons' for freshwater fish!

    Hey Roberta,

Thanks for your reply. Good idea with grinding access to the hole for split ring..

Hopefuly get a chance to test some this weekend and report back with the results..

Worst case atleast the butter will be well spread on the B&E rolls!!!!

    Cheers.

  13. Hey all,

After a recent trip I discovered the world of Jigging for Kings, and have to say it was ****** Awsome.. Unfortunately I lost a few fish, and also a couple of knife jigs.. that belonged to the skipper..and It got me thinking..

Can I make my own Jigs??

So Off to vinnies and picked up some old cutlery.. got a nice variety of knifes, - Butter, cheese, etc ...

I assume drilling a hole in the top of handle and using split ring for line and hook will be strong enough for that XL fish Im after...?

WHat about weight position on knife? does weight need to be at top or bottom?

Has anyone tried this before? if so any tips??

    Cheers

Robbie, I will replace your Jigs with NEW proffesional product, until my custom range gets off the ground....!!

  14. I asked if the jetty off the pool was included - haven't been advised yet ..... also asked for proof of injury by way of Doctor's reports and phtotographs .... time will tell!!

    Roberta

    WHats Next? Clifton Gardens???

once the precedent has been set....

  15. Yeh Looks to be one of those Giant well fed open water stripey southern garfish to me... .. Great bait for attracting Emu's I hear

Toby... See being nice to the occasional Yakka does pay off :074:

if thats the result of freeing the Yakka's, you should start releasing legal kings and see what happens - Maybe you'll get that prized 20Kg Yakka One day... I agree Karma forces are strong around fishing..

Or was it all the warnies consumed over the weekend that worked thier warney magic?? Were you reaching for one when it hit...?

Well done, great looking fish there.

Get those Details up keen to know What Bait/Lure did you got it on? Lenght of fight? And more importantly what songs did Roscoe perform for y'all????

  16. If it makes you feel any better...

My Kitchen has more Hooks sinkers & Jigs than Plates and cutlery..

Freezer has no food, but is full..

Rod Holder's x 2 - one on Balcony for drying, one next to bed.. (converted Guitar racks)

Mono offcuts blends well in to my tiles, whilst Braid offcuts compliments Carpet very nicely

Tackle Box gets repacked at least once a week, and SP Container keeps getting upgraded to larger size (as does fishing bag)

Boot in car is always ready just in case.. Rods, nipper pumps.. you name it

I woke up at 2am on tuesday morn as left the TV on... So i went squidin..

    and I Bloody LoVE IT!!..

I just cant work out why the wife left me....???

The prep and Deprep are just as satisfying.. looking after & Cleaning Gear properly can be Hard work, but all ads to the Fishing experience..

Hey CEPH- Where did you get your icefishing pole???? how much?? I think I may need one :074:

SON: Dad? A guy's selling a pair of jousting sticks.

FATHER: Jousting sticks? What's he want for 'em?

SON:Make us an offer. Give him a call?

    FATHER: Yeah.

    SON: Dad? 450.

FATHER: For jousting sticks? Tell him he's dreamin'!

  17. JUst saw your signiture update....... :074::074:

I will be installing some tamperproof bait tank devices for this trip me thinks... and you know what Ill even bridal them for you mate..

watching the Seabreeze wind and swell forecast it loks like tis following the stockmarket trends........

  18. Pound for pound!

    Yakkas! :)

Ducking, diving, little freight trains heading straight for the prop :P

Thank God they don't make them in 20kg models :1prop:

    Robbie.

Robbie, SO thats why you keep throwing them overboard.?? you want them to grow bigger? or you want to keep heading back to bait grounds??.. :074: ...

Pound for pound i reckon slimeys give out some grunt for there size.. as do trevs..

  19. Cripes Robbie It's no wonder Basil and Toby didn't fish together. By the look of this bloke Toby, Toby would throw him in too.

    Cheers

    jewgaffer :1fishing1:

Yeh that alter ego of mine can get pretty "mediaval" when it comes to techniques and bait types// Dogs do work well, but fisho"s work even better ... :1badmood::tease:

Baz is a top deckie though.. Yesterday on one of the fish he stood on my foot to secure me inside the vessell... those paws are better than any chair...

Huntman.. what session you talkin about????? :mad3:

  20. Mate the extended remix report is even better than the live SMS service you run...

What a day. Congrats.. and Go the handline!! (BTW was thingking a couple of wraps in Nashua 457 (gaff) would be a good alternative to gloves- just on your index fingr'//)

Yeh def up for long weekend sesh, thats if youve left any for the rest of us.....

well done mate, cracker effort and top report

  22. Great flatty mate!!!!!

Those Ian Miller Rack Raider rods are unreal. ( unless you snap the tip in your car air conditioning vent ) :mad3:

Yeh mate, My little girl gave it to me for Xmas and Its been used everyday (except fr yesterday) since!!!

I was out on a boat a week ago pulling in my line and the Tip just fell off about 3 inches back frm the end.. (you reckon the guy at the tackle shop believed me! ) Anyway he said we can send it back and see what they say which could take months, or he could just put a new guide on.. I chose the new guide funnily enough. I reckon its better now as A. it doesnt get caught in the door when I leave.. B. Doesnt get caught in the car Aircon.. and still got all that flex and whip that makes em great for plastics.. What real are you using? Im using a Sedona 2500.. Just smooth as and casts forever..

Where were you hitting the whiting?

  23. Nursing a cracking hangover I headed down to Clifton Gardens to get some fresh sea air into my bloodstream.. Not much going on and wind was coming on from the East so decided to move around to bradley’s Head. Pulled out the plastics and opened a pack of Pumpkinseed Gulp that Ive been hearing so much about.

Second cast delivered this little 63cm lady.. She shook her head all the way to the beach..I was casting with a 20knt wind behind me so had 70m to bring her in.. Great fun on 6lb Fireline.. Put her back in hope of a smaller model for dinner but ended up going through the rest of my pumpseed plastics for no more fish… Lots of hits though, just no hookups..

    post-5303-1200622205_thumb.jpg

    post-5303-1200622248_thumb.jpg

I seem to be going through heaps of plastics without as many fish.. Are there any ways of improving the hookup rate by placing the hook further down the plastic? Seems the tail is always first to go and then the buggers will eat around the hook….

The plastic that hooked this lizard was almost bunched up around the jig and the hook exited plastic just before the tale bit after the thin section .. ( know what I mean!!?).. th main issue is this limits the tail movement alot

I’d be interested to hear how others are rigging their plastics?

    Cheers
