  1. Hi everyone,

I am thinking about another dedicated rod reel setup for squiding around Sydney.  I’ve been looking at the Emeraldas for several years but now see the Sephia line from Shimano.  Anyone on here have experience with either of these setups rods reels?

    cheers

  2. I went out in the Hacking on Friday by myself as my usual fishing mate ( my son) was busy partying with mates this weekend.  We were supposed to have a contractor over today Saturday but they canceled last night.  My Mrs said what do you want to do on Saturday then?   I said well it is “ Take your Mrs Fishing day”. So she said ok.  Lol. Got to swallow rock boat ramp at 5am.  It was starting to get a little busy but not bad, there were still parking spots.  Today was a mixture of bait and lures targeting kingfish and some flatties.  No flatties today but had two good hook ups into something reasonable in size that we lost.  Another I saw was a rat king so we were pretty sure the other two were too as they fought the same.  Anyway Ruth picked up this little pinky and after a quick photo put it back.  Her first pinky.  Water temp was 23c wind was against the tide so drifting was into the tide.  We used pilchards and squid for bait and I mixed in some soft plastics and jigs for lures.  We used circle hooks and it was great to see even a small fish hooked perfectly in the corner of the mouth.  It was a great day even if we didn’t land the big ones.  At least we can talk about the ones that got away.

Out of curiosity, do you guys always use the brakes on your trailers, or only on long distance/high speed roads? Do you deactivate them when reversing?

I use them whenever I’m moving my boat.  The only time I don’t is when backing down the ramp or up my driveway.

For those looking for inspiration on how to set up your kayak, I ran into a fellow Fishraider at the Tunk's park boat ramp with his seriously decked out Hobie Outback and he was kind enough to let me take the following photos. Some of the equipment he has includes:

    • Electric motor
    • Side scan sonar
    • Go Pro
    • Extra rod holders
    • Built in wheels for easy launch and retrieval at the boat ramp
    • A small sail to help keep the boat pointed into the wind
    • Safety flag.

It makes mine feel like the baseline model.

  5. Just an update for everyone.  I contacted Garmin and they wanted to look at the unit after seeing video of what it was doing and pictures of all my connections.  Garmin decided to replace the unit with a refurbished unit of the same model for free.  I was extremely appreciative.  I really can’t say enough of how well I was treated.  Garmin , Thank You!

    Awesome, thanks!

Nope, never reversed a trailer in my life! Another thing to learn I guess!

Practice practice practice,,, just not at the boat ramp.   Maybe rent a box trailer and practice backing up on your day off.  Industrial parks on Sundays are good places to get skilled up.  Make sure you take a spotter with you at first.  A spotter who either really knows how to give good advice or one that will at least tell you to stop before you hit someone. When you go with your new boat the first time it might benefit you to have a seasoned boater with you to help get on and off the trailer without ending up on YouTube.
